Welcome!

[edit]

Hello, Revolutionary27, and welcome to Wikipedia! My name is Adam and I work with the Wiki Education Foundation; I help support students who are editing as part of a class assignment.

I hope you enjoy editing here. If you haven't already done so, please check out the student training library, which introduces you to editing and Wikipedia's core principles. You may also want to check out the Teahouse, a community of Wikipedia editors dedicated to helping new users. Below are some resources to help you get started editing.

Feedback

[edit]

Adam is the Content Expert assigned to your class, so it's best to ask for his feedback. Ian (Wiki Ed) (talk) 19:48, 28 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

There was an error with the "Get help" template that directed everyone to my page. Which is why no one was posting on Adam's page. I was puzzled why everyone was pinging me instead. :) Ian (Wiki Ed) (talk) 15:03, 7 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that happened to me the first time as well. However, I recently wrote on Adam's talk page and it doesn't seem that anyone is responding to recent posts. I posted my request about a week ago so I am not sure if I just have to wait longer. @Ian (Wiki Ed): -Revolutionary27 (talk) 15:25, 7 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

You made as string of edits to Jean Jacques Régis de Cambacérès

 • "During the Hundred Days, the short period of time when Napoleon returned from exile, Cambacérès served as the minister of justice."

You also made an edit to Hundred Days article in which you added:

"Jean Jacques Régis de Cambacérès was the minister of defense during this time and was a close confidant of Napoleon."
 1. "defense" is American English the article is written in British English and the word is spelt "defence". If you are not familiar with British English I suggest you turn on a British spelling-checker. Nearly all the articles on the Napoleonic Wars are written in British English (For guidance on this see MOS:ENGVAR and MOS:RETAIN).
 2. The two article contradict each other was he minister of justice of minister of war?

The citation you used in both was <ref name=":2">{{Cite book|title=Napoleon and His Collaborators|last=Woloch|first=Isser|publisher=W. W. Norton & Company|year=2002|isbn=978-0-393-32341-2|location=|pages=|quote=|via=}}</ref>

I think you would benefit from reading the guidance in WP:CITE, because you have made three mistakes:

 1. citations to books should contain page numbers. see the section WP:CITEHOW. Without that someone would have to read the large sections of Woloch's book to find page in the book that supports the information in the Wikipedia article.
 2. A name like name=":2" is not very descriptive better to add a name similar to the name used in the example name="Woloch 2002, p. ?" if the named ref..tag pair is to be used more than once--otherwise do not add a name <ref> -- see Wikipedia:Citing_sources#Repeated citations.
 3. The article Hundred Days uses short citations with long citations in a References section. See WP:CITESHORT and as the article uses templates see also Template:Harvard citation documentation#Shortened footnote).

So please:

 1. add page numbers to all your book citations
 2. fix the name="name"
 3. check if Cambacérès was or was not mister of war/defence.

BTW it seems to me, that Cambacérès was not an important player in Napoleon's second abdication because his name is not mentioned in the detailed article on Abdication of Napoleon, 1815 or in the detailed articles on French Provisional Government of 1815, or in Waterloo Campaign: peace negotiations.

Thank you @PBS: for all of this great feedback. I am relatively new to editing on Wikipedia so your input really helps. I'll definitely add page numbers, double check information, and make the corresponding changes on the page. Thank you!

I am glad to be of help. BTW the templates like {{cite book}} have two parameters for use with pages "page=" and "pages=". This causes confusion as some new users misunderstand what the "pages=" parameter is for. Thanks to google-books and other such sites "pages=" is sometimes used to state how many pages are in the book. That is not what it is for. "page=" is for one page page=101 while "pages=" is for two or more pages pages=101–103 (the dash before 103 is not a hyphen it is an ndash you will find it available just below the standard edit window as one of the "Insert" options. If you do not use the standard edit screen, and do not know the key sequence in the editor you are using, you can add it via –. -- PBS (talk) 06:16, 6 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
