[edit]COI notice
[edit]Hi RealAnise
Again, welcome to Wikipedia. So far all your edits are about Ocata, and are edits similar to those a company rep might make. I am providing you notice of our COI guideline and Terms of Use, and then have some notes and questions for you.
Hello, RealAnise. We welcome your contributions to Wikipedia, but if you are affiliated with some of the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest or close connection to the subject.
All editors are required to comply with Wikipedia's neutral point of view content policy. People who are very close to a subject often have a distorted view of it, which may cause them to inadvertently edit in ways that make the article either too flattering or too disparaging. People with a close connection to a subject are not absolutely prohibited from editing about that subject, but they need to be especially careful about ensuring their edits are verified by reliable sources and writing with as little bias as possible.
If you are very close to a subject, here are some ways you can reduce the risk of problems:
- Avoid or exercise great caution when editing or creating articles related to you, your organization, or its competitors, as well as projects and products they are involved with.
- Avoid linking to the Wikipedia article or website of your organization in other articles (see Wikipedia:Spam).
- Exercise great caution so that you do not accidentally breach Wikipedia's content policies.
Please familiarize yourself with relevant content policies and guidelines, especially those pertaining to neutral point of view, verifiability of information, and autobiographies. Note that Wikipedia's terms of use require disclosure of your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation.
For information on how to contribute to Wikipedia when you have a conflict of interest, please see our frequently asked questions for organizations. Thank you.
Question
[edit]Would you please disclose your relationship, if any, with Ocata? Thanks! Jytdog (talk) 12:22, 5 April 2015 (UTC)
Hi Jytdog,
I've been following the work of Ocata (formerly Advanced Cell Technology) for several years. I was diagnosed with idiopathic macular degeneration almost four years ago, and I found out through my research that ACT had just started the Phase I/II testing for its RPE treatment for AMD (which would also treat the much more rare forms, such as the one I had.) While the only available treatment (Avastin) did miraculously work for me, there is no currently existing cure, which Ocata's treatment would become. So it's safe to say that I support this company! ;) After a couple of years of research, I bought some of their stock when they were still on the penny OTC exchange. But they're sure not paying me anything... wouldn't that be nice?? This may be a longer answer than you really needed, but I wanted to make sure that I was clear about what you'd asked. Please ask me any other questions that are necessary. Thanks! RealAnise (talk) 17:53, 5 April 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks for taking the time to answer. i don't know what to say about your going blind... other than to say, i am so sorry about that. Terrible.
- Turning to WP.... what you've disclosed here is that you do have both a personal and financial conflict of interest with regard to Ocata. To help maintain the integrity and neutrality of the article, you really should avoid directly editing the article. Your passion for the company can help us improve and update the article, so what would be great, if you used the Edit Request function, to request updates on the article's Talk page. I added a box to the top of the Talk page (see the bottom of the yellow/brown box at the top of the Talk page) that lets you make an edit request with just one click. I watch the article, as do others, and we can work with you on that stuff, to actually implement suggestions you offer, after we review them for neutrality, etc. Would you be open to doing that? Jytdog (talk) 18:08, 5 April 2015 (UTC)
Hey Jytdog, I'm still learning about Wikipedia, and I guess that the Talk editing function is the next thing to learn! :) Yes, I definitely want to work with you and the other editors in whatever way is necessary. The Ocata page is pretty out of date and really does need to be updated, so however we need to get it done... let's do it. I appreciate that it's got to be difficult to keep track of who has some kind of pre-existing stake in the articles, because if it works in the same way as academic research, people simply do not put all that time and effort into areas where they do not have a dog in the hunt. I really admire that WP tries to constrain this tendency. (BTW-- there's more to the story-- the only available treatment (Avastin) miraculously worked for me, and I'm in remission. Yay! :) RealAnise (talk) 18:21, 5 April 2015 (UTC)
- Oh so you have wet AMD! yes, avasin and lucentis... and there are more on the way. wow that is great. Thanks so much for being willing to follow COI. I will see you on the Ocata Talk page! Jytdog (talk) 19:12, 5 April 2015 (UTC)
