Atitang or Apo Atitang (officially her royal title is Bae Libren, she told me this in October 1998, but I forgot to ask what "Libren" means) may I share with you some things about this extraordinary woman, chosen by the 1998 Philippine Centennial Committee as one of the 100 most outstanding Filipino women of the last century. Two of her advocacies was evangelization and cultural preservation. For the former, she prepared herself by enrolling at the Ebenezer Bible College. She was the first of three Subanen women to get out of their community to get a college education (the other two was Julia Imbing (Ortiz) and Ginontong Imbing Bualan (Macaraeg). At a time when women were expected and contented to just stay at home, Bae Libren and her two cousins did something unheard of in the past. After her Bible College education, she was the official hostess of her uncle the reigning Datu Lemuk Imbing. Having learned English very well, she was the perfect hostess to her uncle's VIP visitors. Later she evolved as a bible translator receiving special training from the Summer Institute of Linguistics. She was the main translator of the Subanen New Testament Bible. (One of the documents we submitted to the Centennial Celebration Committee for Women was a copy of the Subanen Bible. The Bible and copies of the Gospel Subanen comics were handcarried by a staff member of the Centennial Committee.) For the latter, that is, culture preservation, she received two national awards and one international award (from the United Nations no less), in recognition for her efforts in this field. It was an unforgettable experience (myself and my niece Gigi Hapalla Mangaoang) to watch one of us ascending the stage of the Folk Arts Theatre in Manila (June 6, 1998) and receive a once-in-a-century-award- the 1998 Centennial 100 Women Who Made A Difference Award.

   Gerry Imbing It is our wish that Apo Atitang Imbing-Huminis will continue to inspire today's young generation in being the best in their chosen field of endeavor, to be obedient to God's calling and live a life for others. Your Apo Atitang was the first woman PTA president (Parents Teachers Association) and was also the first to organize the Lapuyan Seniors Citizen Association. In a span of fifty years she received about 27 local, provincial, national and international awards, a testimony to her passion for nation building through the preservation of our cultural identity in the province of Zamboanga del Sur and her love for the upliftment of the quality of life of her fellowmen. In the 1980s when she went to visit a church in New York, USA, (the same church that supported the American missionaries Samuel and Ella Lommasson in their 33 years of missioning among the Subanen tribespeople) she received VIP treatment at the airport in New York. She went through US customs without the usual falling-in-line procedures. And she was front-page news in one newspaper !

Dr VICENTE LARAS IMBING Yoy Teng as we fondly called him was the youngest brother of my mother Atitang Huminis . His other siblings were yoy Lantay Imbing, tlya Quina Banghulot and tiya Guintaya Singgo Their father was apo Khalay (a gbelyan), eldest son of Thimuay Imbing "Mbeyng" and apo Nansay Laras (daughter of a great gbelyan) He was married to auntie Trining, Trinidad Bugayong Ferrer, a teacher, who hailed from Upi, Maguindanao, whom he met while studying at Silliman University. They were blessed with 4 daughters and 1 son namely: Valent Maris Gosh (+) a nurse, Lecil Maris Guerzon, a nurse in US, Idiline Maris- Chuang (+) a nurse, Gladys Ikeya Gladys Imbing Lucero residing and working also in US, and Nigel Vicente "sonny". His grandchildren are Inka Zoraima 'Isso", a nurse in US who has 1 daughter, Alec Guerzon, a medical doctor in US, Tiffany Maris Chuang-Sioson who has 2 daughters and Kyle Chuang according to Apo Janie Imbing Huminis Hapala
