Re:Thanks

You're very welcome! I'm not surprised you've requested semi-protection! You page seems to have been vandalised a real lot today. That shows your anti-vandal work is excellent. As a result of this, I've got a present for you, just a sec... Lradrama 19:39, 28 October 2007 (UTC)

The RickK Anti-Vandalism Barnstar
This is in recognition of your excellent anti-vandalism efforts, which have earned you no less than four userpage scars in one day of editing! Keep up this excellent work, it is much appreciated! :-) Lradrama 19:41, 28 October 2007 (UTC)

Hi there! Thanks for catching that bit of move vandalism and fixing the page back up. Just one minor point, though. Copy/paste moves aren't really allowed here as the edit history of the article is lost. What we normally do is just move the article back over the redirect which has been created. It's perfectly okay for anyone to just use the 'move' tag about to rename the page. I've tidied up a bit :) Thanks for the help - Alison 22:34, 1 November 2007 (UTC)

Nono - it's totally sorted now. All is well. Everyone hates move vandalism because it's awfully messy and hard to get right during cleanup. Only thing for it is more practice :) Good work! - Alison 22:49, 1 November 2007 (UTC)
I don't want to get blocked!! :-) Seriously though, can I point you in the direction of the test wiki? http://wiki.xyrael.net. It's run by some of the folks here & what you can do is request admin access (I'm a bureaucrat over there and can do that for you). Then you can use it as a playground to practice moves/deletes/unmoves, etc. Practise using admin tools, too :) If you're interested, let me know. It's an excellent testing ground for that sort of stuff - Alison 22:57, 1 November 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for your help

Hi Giles, Thanks for informing me about signing my post. I was wondering if you can help me out with something else. I am starting to add more content to Dermacia_Inc. How do I change the very top section? There's no "edit" feature. There is this word "cosmeceutical" that I would like to link to the Wikipedia page Cosmeceutical. --Cerroo 19:35, 3 November 2007 (UTC)(Talk)

Oh I just figured it out. Didn't see the "edit this page" on the very top of the page. Thanks again! --Cerroo 19:46, 3 November 2007 (UTC)(Talk)

It's very strange that thing occurs because if you see here, the last column, first row abbreviation doesn't do that thing. MicroX 20:46, 3 November 2007 (UTC)
I found on the Scottish Premier League 2007-08 that you can do this to fix the problem. Adding .

I, Jameson L. Tai, award you The RickK Anti-Vandalism Barnstar for fixing my user page after repeated vandalism attempts by User:PC3. Yeah I did look at the history. It was weird. I mean the guy was trying to transpose his life story or just copy and pasting national enquirer nonsense on my page. It was completely ridiculous. Thanks again! :D - Jameson L. Tai talkcontribs 07:58, 7 November 2007 (UTC)

User page spam

On User:OfficeDesigns I've reverted your edit - the user in question had blanked the page themself, thus removing the spam, and it was your reversal of that (when posting your tag) that reinserted the spam back onto the userpage.

Guy, the 'name itself is spam, which means the whole page goes, period/full stop. The tag goes back. --Calton | Talk 13:38, 7 November 2007 (UTC)

I disagree - the name (without the userpage) doesn't automatically constitute a breach of username policy (it could, for example, be someone who has a keen interest (albeit a strange one) in office design).
The ability to add 1 + 1 to get 2 would be helpful. To recap: User has spam-like name: ambiguous spamming intention. User adds spam text to spam-named page: unambiguous spamming intention.
I would have presumed, given that you feel so strongly about it, that you would have added it at WP:UAA along with Jones Agency, LLC?
And you would have presumed wrongly. When a spam page is gone and ((tl|temporary user}} tag is on the talk page, the spam has been stopped/will be removed without a trace soon enough. If it returns, then heavier artillery can be utilized.
Is there some point to this attempt at "gotcha!" argumentation?--Calton | Talk 13:58, 7 November 2007 (UTC)
I don't particularly appreciate the sarcasm,...
Nor do I appreciate argumentation done for its own sake. As in, the point of this line of argumentation is to accomplish what, exactly?
nor do I think my comments amount to "gotcha! argumentation".
They were. You were looking for some wedge by arguing for some sort of foolish consistency. Why, I don't know -- other than the obvious one of "winning" an argument for its own sake.
BTW, you still haven't addressed the issue of how using a User page to promote an unpublished book ISN'T spam (see below). --Calton | Talk 14:37, 7 November 2007 (UTC)
I disagree that I was arguing either for its own sake or for some foolish wedge (whatever that is?).
"Wedge" would by part of your strategy for rhetorical victory, the lame "gotcha" attempt would be a tactic. As for disagreeing with my actions, unless you're seriously trying to claim that the OfficeDesign page WASN'T an attempt at spam, (I repeat) I fail to see the point on which you're disagreeing.

And as for User:Celebrusia, of COURSE it's spam: it's being used to promote someone's unpublished book. --Calton | Talk 13:46, 7 November 2007 (UTC)

Which particular part of the page do you assert is "promoting" the book in question?
That would be "all of it": you DO know what "promotion" means, right? You know, creating attention or notability for something which currently has none.
If that constitutes spam then you may as well slap the db-spam tag on 90% of the articles on this site about books, as that's pretty much all they constist [sic] of.
1) WP:OTHERCRAPEXISTS. You can come up with a better argument, surely.
2) What part of "unpublished" did you overlook? See also, "creating attention or notability for something which currently has none".
So, once again, what is the actual actionable thing you're arguing for? Since it's not "spam should not be deleted", what, exactly, is the point? --Calton | Talk 23:39, 7 November 2007 (UTC)

Celebrusia

Hi,

Yes, I did. The deciding element for me is the user's edit history. If his only edits are to create a page which appears promotional, that calls into question his understanding of Wikipedia (and, possibly, his intent.) While not stated in the CSD (because, of course, the CSD is General, not Userspace specific), the consideration of a candidate's contributions is common practice in deciding whether to delete userpages, either speedily or through MfD. I would not object to restoration if the user in question came forward and expressed an interest in reworking the page. For the moment, the deletion serves two functions 1.) removing spam from Wikipedia; 2.) as a didactic example for the editor that he needs to reconsider his approach to Wikipedia. The rationale for deletion remains grounded in the CSD, but there were extenuating circumstances I also considered in rendering my decision. Best wishes, Xoloz 15:18, 8 November 2007 (UTC)

Hi Giles,

I appreciate your interest in maintaining disambiguation pages. I think you've made a mistake in your understanding of WP:MOSDAB, however. If you review it, I think you'll find that the main entry is supposed to be the first sentence, before the disambiguating sentence, which is followed by the list of entries. This is especially true when there is an 'original name article' (without the disambiguation in parenthases).

Happy editing, Neelix 21:43, 9 November 2007 (UTC)

Hiya - are you sure the IP user's userpage is the correct place for a vandal template? Was it your intention to report the user to WP:AIV? Giles Bennett (Talk, Contribs) 22:30, 9 November 2007 (UTC)

Yeah, the user vandalised Alien Language. Attempting to recall the appropriate template reminded me how much I hate combatting vandalism. It's stressful enough to encounter and revert without the riggmarole of looking up the guidelines for reporting it so I gave up... :( --Seans Potato Business 22:44, 9 November 2007 (UTC)

You're right - how stupid of me. The actual vandalism is from the person before. That's the edit I reverted and that's the person I meant to flag. Thanks and sorry! --Seans Potato Business 22:58, 9 November 2007 (UTC)
I don't *really* have a potato business per se, but I did sell three "novelty potatoes" to an American over eBay. I've got a website - www.seanspotatobusiness.com but I never finished setting it up (and don't intend to!) so it's not actually possible to buy the stuff. Check it out :) --Seans Potato Business 23:06, 9 November 2007 (UTC)
