Correspondence RE: Citation needed Redirect

[edit]

Uh...

[edit]
What are you talking about? Citation needed isn't a deleted protected page anymore. 1ne 22:33, 1 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, I see what you're talking about. That's to prevent people from linking it to Wikipedia:Citation needed. 1ne 22:34, 1 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Talk:Citation needed has an overwhelming amount of rational support for a more appropriate redirect. That's fine if you protect it to prevent people from linking to nonexistent Wikipedia policies, but the current redirect should at least point to the right article. As several users pointed out, nobody who types "citation needed" into the Search box is looking for an article on citation. -- Randall00 Talk 22:40, 1 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
That's great; consensus on DRV agreed with my protection move. 1ne 22:42, 1 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Err, "that's great"?? Are you actually not going to fix that? -- Randall00 Talk 22:51, 1 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It is against policy to create cross namespace redirects per Wikipedia:Redirect#When_should_we_delete_a_redirect.3F:
You might want to delete a redirect if one or more of the following conditions is met (but note also the exceptions listed below this list):
5. It is a cross-space redirect out of article space, such as one pointing into the User or Wikipedia namespace. The major exceptions to this rule are the "WP:" shortcut redirects (like WP:RFD), which technically are in the main article space but in practice form their own "pseudo-namespace". All "articles" beginning with "WP:" are in fact redirects. -- ALKIVAR 23:08, 1 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Can't argue with the terms I suppose, so I'll give up the fight on this one despite the overwhelming support. Though the entire experience has left me with the temptation to request that WP:RFD be re-directed to Arbitrary. -- Randall00 Talk 21:48, 3 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Question

[edit]

It seems that you added Daze (Queens) to the deletion log [1] but the article isn't under AfD. Was this an error? IrishGuy talk 22:41, 22 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! Yes, I was actually just in the middle of a multi-windowed Wikipedia project of sorts and that was on the list of things to do, but I clumsily unplugged my computer with my foot in the middle of the whole thing and completely forgot about the Daze article. Thanks for letting me know, but I've probably picked up one too many tasks these days to worry about that one for now. *thumbs up* -- Randall00 Talk 21:27, 26 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You have no right to defame my userpage! Unless you gimme a barnstar! >:-( —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Partapdua1 (talkcontribs) 21:18, 26 February 2007 (UTC). Partapdua1 21:18, 26 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Well sure I can! By gum, I could even clean it up, remove all the false categorizations, take out the entire pasted Jesus article and nominate it for Article of the Day if I so choose! Trouble is, I can't think of anything that would be any more of a waste of time. -- Randall00 Talk 21:24, 26 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Randall00! I'm in the midst of my second year of college level Indonesian, so hopefully I'm somewhere in between knowing nothing and being way too technical. Thanks, in any event, for your questions!

In the Indonesian language, plural nouns are generally pluralized by context. So you might say "Satu kretek, dua kretek" meaning "One clove cigarette, two clove cigarettes". The word "kretek" has the meaning of "clove cigarette" and "clove cigarettes" based on its context, next to the numeral word.

Otherwise, you can pluralize a word through reduplication in order to talk about clove cigarattes in general. That is, "kretek-kretek" does mean "clove cigarettes" but it has a bit more of "in general, clove cigarettes...". So we might say "Dia merokok dua kretek.", "He smokes two clove cigarettes", or "Kretek-kretek kurang sehat.", "Clove cigarettes are less than healthy."

One would never, in proper Indonesian, reduplicate a word that is already plural, like "dua kretek-kretek". It just doesn't make sense.

As for pronunciation, to get technical about it, the final "k" is a glottal stop, but for all intents and purposes, you could just say "KREH-tehk".

Also, while it is incorrect in Indonesian, I have heard "kretek" pluralized in English to "kreteks".

Hope that helps! If you have more questions I'd be happy to answer. Way more information than you could possibly want can be found here Thanks! Gws57 23:51, 26 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Aha! Thank you very much, Mr. gws57! That's far more information than I expected; looks as though I got lucky by selecting someone who not only takes courses on the Indonesian language, but is also willing to spend time discussing the correct protocol for pronunciation and speech with someone who hails from a country where nobody even knows the meaning of the word. Odds are nobody in Canada is going to call me on the full glottal stop!
Incidentally, being from Canada has crippled my ability to read phonetic letters due to constant online mockery of the "eh?" stereotype, almost exclusively from Americans. In fact, I'm not sure I can say I've ever met a Canadian who truthfully fits the stereotype. Either way, as a result, I am forced to assume that your phonetic interpretation of "KREH-tehk" is aurally akin to "cray-tek" but I guess I can't be sure. I hope that's the case, that's what I've been calling them. Then again, I guess there's other possible interpretations of the "eh" sound, too; once again, I am a victim of the shortcomings of text-based communication! -- Randall00 Talk 19:27, 1 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The rockers

[edit]

If you take a look at their OWW profile, which is linked at the bottom of the page, you'll see under previous identities it says Midnight Rockers (AWA}. Cheers Killswitch Engage 07:38, 7 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Gotcha. What was in question was whether or not the name was derivative of Midnight Express and Rock 'n' Roll Express, because there doesn't seem to be any immediately obvious relationship between the names that would automatically suggest so. -- Randall00 Talk 14:44, 7 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Where do we find an alternative MediaWiki site to support MediaWiki in spite of MediaWiki admins?

[edit]

I'm banned form MediaWiki.org! See http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/User:Peterblaise

--- open quote ---
Your user name or IP address has been blocked.
The block was made by Bdk. The reason given is repeated personal attacks and offensive threads [read:disagreement], reinstating removed comments [note, I never reinstated anything, I moved deleted contributions to discussion/talk pages to explore them, and it's a WIKI after all, everyone changes things back and forth until agreement is reached - that's what the discussion pages are supposed to be for!], no willingness to cooperate in a constructive way [see my contributions to article and article-discussion/talk pages to refute this], see his latest edits [which are basically a call for tolerance, rather like this email to you - offensive? Something MediaWiki contributors should be protected from? You decide!].
Expiry of block: infinite
Intended blockee: Peterblaise
You can contact Bdk [I've tried to contact :Bdk: and others in the discussion/talk pages to appeal for greater tolerance and open discussions at Open Source, to no avail] or another administrator to discuss the block. You cannot use the 'email this user' feature unless a valid email address is specified in your account preferences and you have not been blocked from using it [yep, blocked!]. Your current IP address is 151.207.244.4, and the block ID is #508. Please include either or both of these in any queries.
--- end quote ---

PS - email me at peterblaise@yahoo.com (was peter.monahon@uspto.gov only from 2007/01 to 2008-01) and I'll try to help you off-line if I can.

PPS - How do I troubleshoot the SMTP/email notice feature? In one of our beta-test MediaWiki intranet installations, we get:

"Could not send confirmation mail. Check address for invalid characters.
Mailer returned: Failed to connect to mailserver at "localhost" port 25,
verify your "SMTP" and "smtp_port" setting in php.ini or use ini_set()"

... although I'm not expecting you to answer this technical challenge right here in this email, my point is, like everyone else using MediaWiki, I'm in the middle of trying to successfully implement and support MediaWiki for my users, and I'm desperately looking for a supportive community where the admins set an example of helpfulness and tolerance. Thank you.

How about you? How are you getting any success implementing and supporting MediaWiki software in spite of MediaWiki admins? Argh!

Wow. What a stunning little dictatorship they're running over there, huh? It seems to me like your case against the ban is bulletproof, yet MediaWiki seems quite intent on shooting itself in the foot anyway. Incidentally, I'm going through similar ridiculous issues regarding shoddy administration at another forum I use regularly, too.

It seems lately that everyone on the internet is so bent out of shape taking things personally that it impedes progress and growth to the point that the world online is infinitely more hostile, immature and underdeveloped than the world outside could ever be.

I do intend to post my disapproval at MediaWiki, but it's clearer than ever that it's not going to do any good.

How am I getting any success implementing and supporting MediaWiki software, you ask??

By myself.

Slowly.

Peter Blaise says: Thank you so much for trying to restore my user page at MediaWiki.org: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/User_talk:Peterblaise Let's see how long it stays (update: 2 hours give or take a time zone before :Bdk: reverted and deleted everything of mine once again! See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Peterblaise ... and at http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/User_talk:Randall00, the attempted discussion goes on, and on ... until what, yet another MediaWiki attempted user is BANNED from MediaWiki.org?!? MediaWiki.org is pickin' off their customers one by one!). We can TRY to help our fellow MediaWiki software people, but the admins at MediaWiki.org forgot that IT'S A WIKI - EDIT EVERY PAGE, and all viewpoints SHOULD be welcome, especially on user discussion / talk pages. It's amazing that they think it's all the personal-whim property of the few admins, and they forget a WIKI was supposed to permit and encourage discussion, discussion, discussion. They think that if we still disagree after a round or two, then we're being vandals or spammers. I dunno - is it a German "we follow da rules" thing, "you free-thinking americans be damned" or what? :Bdk: and HappyDog are German as far as I can audit. I have nothing against them personally and I'm happy they're there, just sad they feel like bulldozing other contributor's very hard-earned, and very valuable efforts! I don't want anyone to go away, but "Why can't we all just get along?" I can't say I feel like Rodney King because I have no broken bones, but I can't imagine broadcasting "MEDIAWIKI" as the engine behind our agency's wiki efforts anymore - I can't stand behind a recommendation for other people to go there for dialogic support (see http://www.greeningofindustry.org/dialog.pdf), or even support of any basic kind. At MediaWiki.org, they've kind of identified themselves as developer-heads, and so, "user's, or anyone with (supposedly) simple questions who even sound like "users" (ecch!) be damned"! I think the lesson is "grow or die" and they seem to be choosing NOT to grow. Too bad, because I was hoping to share a whopping load of support documentation and custom development code. I guess I'll keep it in house. It they don't want open minded contributors to open source on MediaWiki, I can't stop 'em! -- Peter Blaise Peterblaise 20:31, 19 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

(PS - DON'T answer them on MediaWiki.org or YOU'LL be next to be banned! NEVER disagree with an admin at MediaWiki.org or: YOU'RE NEXT!!!)

I haven't been around for a while, so I thought I'd reply to my talk page on yours. Super Smash Bros. Melee for me is much different from other video games, so I don't think it quite fitting to put it on my favorite games, though it is one of my favorite interests. As a purely 1-player game, Smash would not be one of my favorites; as a competitive game, the only other games with which I have any competitive experience are DDR and the Pokémon games (mostly 1st and 2nd generation, though I know a thing or two about 3rd), and that's not very much. But, perhaps I will give Super Smash Bros. Melee a more special mention on my userpage :). – MaskedSHEIK (talk)(contrib) 02:39, 4 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Getting Pro Gaming Taskforce Restarted

[edit]

Hello! I was just looking into helping get the Taskforce on Pro Gaming started again. If you are interested in putting effort into this wikiproject, please post here Best Regards, NativeForeigner Talk/Contribs 21:43, 21 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia policy allows us to link to legal streamed copies of albums. It would be useful to draw up a guideline on how and when to link to such albums; however, there is concern that it may not be appropriate as the music would not be available in all parts of the world. Is the benefit of having access to the music for most users outweighed by the fact that some users will follow a link to find the music is not playable in their region? Your view would be helpful at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Albums. SilkTork ✔Tea time 02:32, 16 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Randall00, you've listed yourself as a member of the pro gaming taskforce of WP:VG.
