edit war at Armenian language / vandalism on its talk page

[edit]

Hi, I'm having some trouble with an IP deleting any reference to foreign influence on Armenian language's phonology and vocabulary, namely Turkish influence. Besides, the IP deletes talk page sections he doesn't like. It would be nice if you could keep Armenian language and Talk:Armenian_language on your watchlist. --Tickle me 03:12, 13 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Azerbaijan map

[edit]

Thanks for the kind words, I've probably put more work into that map than most of my others combined. You can show me a map with the Shahumian region on it, but I don't know if I would add it to the main map - it's apparently a defunct region, and this is a map of the current political divisions. I can, however, make it into a map specifically for a page on the Shahumian region, but there doesn't appear to yet be one on Wikipedia. --Golbez 06:49, 28 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

OK, no worries then... --RaffiKojian 07:12, 28 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I still wouldn't mind an example of it, I can see what I can do. :) --Golbez 07:17, 28 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
hehe, cool. Here is one example: http://www.karabakhtelecom.com/coveragemap.html and the Karabakh - Q, R, S, T maps on http://www.cilicia.com/armo_maps.html have rather good topo maps of high resolution. The norther boder of these maps is the northern border of Shahumyan region, while the souther border of Shahumyan is the technically Karabakh autonomous region. --RaffiKojian 07:51, 28 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It seems to be a general region rather than something with specific borders... but maybe I'm just really tired. :) --Golbez 08:00, 28 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'm pretty sure it had official borders as a region (or subregion). Of course there's a bit of a chance that it was 85 years ago (though I doubt it)... memories in the region are long! :-) --RaffiKojian 08:08, 28 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Nakhichevan

[edit]

Hey, man, sure, I will take a look at it. We are Armenians and therefore are brothers--we should look out for each other:) I am mainly active on Armenia and Armenians pages, moderately active on NK, though these days I am abit too busy to be active at all. But I will take a look.

If generally you find yourself in a revert war, just use sources (not necessarily online). It's a great weapon. You put down a fact, you support with a source, and noone will do anything about it. For the 7 months of me being here, I have never been reverted, so it works:) Try not to get in an edit war with admins--they got power--better work with them, talk to them, argue your point to them.

By the way, what was this all about? [1] (Second paragraph). Why is it even there? Tabib liked to use it as "proof" of his fallacies.--TigranTheGreat 08:34, 28 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Tigran. Actually I have used references, and there is no need to change text, simply to revert if necessary - so hopefully it doesn't take too much time. You can see the two little lines that they Azeris keep trying to change. They are trying to add "alleged" to the destruction of the khachkars in Jugha, and they are removing the line about Azerbaijan closing it's border with Armenia. That's all. I have even put references and links, but basically GrandMaster keeps changing it. --RaffiKojian 10:23, 28 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hey again, Raffi. I see you have requested mediation on the Nakhichevan page. That page is a shame--almost no information on Armenians. Anyway, wish you good luck on the mediation. Also, hope my participation on the page helped abit. I am too busy now on the NK page with Grandmaster.
By the way, there is a voting going on on the Armenian Genocide Talk page. It's about whether the POV tag should be removed. It clearly has to be removed--the page is very neutral, I would say too much. Anyway, your vote will be appreciated.--TigranTheGreat 19:28, 2 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I support Armenians.

Hi Raffi --

I noticed that your image [2] has a "watermark" on it (the armeniopedia text.) Could you possibly upload the same image without the "armeniopedia" text? Right now it looks rather ugly and, I have to say, a bit like an ad, which is inappropriate (I am sure you didn't mean it this way.) If you wish to credit armeniopedia, you can change the license to require a "thanks" in the caption, or you could possibly put the text in a corner where it doesn't interfere with the image. Thanks, and thanks for you work on the mediation. Sdedeo (tips) 03:53, 3 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

final para

[edit]

Hi Raffi -- please check the result of the mediation, and check in to see if you are OK with it. It is agreed to by Tigran, Eupator and GM. The para is here: [3]. Thanks! Sdedeo (tips) 20:31, 5 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The word "deportation" in regards to Karabagh

[edit]

Hey Raffi, I was looking at the page on Dulfa and the wording in the article sounds awkward. GM persists that the term "deportation" fits to describe the actions of the expulsion of Armenians and Azeris out of each others' countries. He says thats the word you used but I'm thinking if its alright if we can change it to "involuntary expulsions" or "forced to flee". There are many words they have used in articles but the word deportation came up about 2-3 times in a ProQuest search and related to the actions of the Azeri gov. Thanks. --MarshallBagramyan 21:09, 7 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Forced to flee is the best choices, deportation has legal connotations and is planned and executed, and I don't believe there are any credible sources using the term deportation. The term was even problematic for the Armenian genocide entry which render its uses in this cases as sensless. Fad (ix) 22:38, 7 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I agree to that to Fadix, however numerous American newspapers used the term including the prominent ones such as the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times. Deportation sounds too much like a word where a government issues a decree and then accompanies them out of the country. I'm still not sure on this but there is lots of evidence pointing out that Armenians were expelled directly while the Azeris left voluntarily, under the fear of retribution for the incidents in Sumgait and Baku. I'm still checking up on these articles on ProQuest but I'd be glad to hear more from yours and Raffi's opinions.

With regards.--MarshallBagramyan 04:48, 8 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Don't rely on newspapers when a word with legal connotation is involved. I don't know of any published work using that term. Fad (ix) 21:15, 8 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I can paste excerpts from the articles if you want but the word is too strong; it portrays an image in the writer's mind that is analagous to the Japanese deportation in 1942 in the United States or our plight in 1915. --MarshallBagramyan 01:37, 9 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

By article, do you mean a newspaper article? If so, you don't need to, but if you know of an article that was not written for the press, I'd be interested to read it. Deportation is clear, it is planned and conducted, with clear measures, even ethnic cleansing does not necessarly imply a deportation. Fad (ix) 02:43, 9 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

ProQuest's searches can be extended to documents that are not from the newspapers; I have yet to look for those, but, if you can be a little more specific on the details for articles that were "not written for the press" (for example, would TIME Magazine, who had correspndents in NK from 1988-1993 be valid?) I'd be more than happy to search and give them to you. MarshallBagramyan 03:22, 9 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Again, I cannot log in from here (my connection is not secure), but it's Raffi. I agree with both of you that deportation is wrong. The people sometimes left just to be safe, sometimes they were made to feel unsafe by the tension, comments in the street, etc - and though I haven't heard of it, no doubt people in both countries must have been told to "go back where they belong" by random people, but not by any government. So yes, forced to flee is a pretty good description of this... --60.226.156.219 11:51, 9 February 2006 (UTC) (RaffiKojian)[reply]

Well, it's pleasing to see some of the greatest Armenians active on the internet working together here :) Indeed, we have Raffi with his phenomenal "cilicia" which I am sure was responsible to educating multitudes on Armenian issues on the internet. Fadix, glad you met my good friend MarshalBaghramyan, whom I know from IMDB.com, and together with him and a few other dedicated Armenians, we have torn apart numerous misinformation attempts by Turkish and Azeri trolls on the site. We both have been fans of your superb and extensive experience on various internet forums in presenting the case of the Armenian genocide, whether under the name of Israelian, Liartracker, or Fadix :) And while I am just getting to know Eupator, his knowledge of Armenian history is impressive as well. We are indeed a great nation, and as long as we have dedicated and honest individuals such as the present company, our nation shall prevail :)--TigranTheGreat 22:33, 13 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Requesting your attention

[edit]

Coolcat placed a tag for deletion of Armin T. Wegner pictures on the basis of copyright infrigement, while it would be a responsable thing to do to request permission to the Wallstein Verlag, pratically speaking there is no legal infrigement for not doing so, the work was published before 1964 and under law, the copyright ends up 28 years after that, generally speaking if it is renewed it would hold 67 more years, but it was published elsewhere and in the archives and not renewed by Wegner himself so copied versions from the developped pictures prior are not copyrightable even if the originals are now the properties of the Wallstein Verlag. I request an answer from your part as soon as possible and if you are unsure of this could you request a permission from Wallstein Verlag for Wikipedia and will really help as Coolcat will search the slightest bug to justify removing everything possible from the Armenian genocide entry. Help needed

[edit]

Hey Raffi, would you be able to help me out by reverting User:-Inanna- on the Adana page? I'm not asking you to get into a dispute, but I was just wondering if you could do me a favor. After that you don't have to revert.

Basically, a bunch of Turkish editors are trying to delete information about the Adana massacre and adding a paragraph about how a large number Turks were killed by Armenians. Of course they haven't cited any neutral sources. --Khoikhoi 08:25, 23 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hey Raffi,

I was wondering if you could keep an eye on the Adana page for me. Some user keeps adding this to the article, although their source is the Turkish government. :-/ Another page is the Ardahan article, in which some user wants the Armenian name removed, calling it "Armenian vandalism". Thanks. —Khoikhoi 03:51, 2 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, thanks. BTW, I didn't know you're the same guy who runs Armeniapedia.com! I noticed the first picture at the Armenian Genocide page is from your website. This is the one I'm talking about. Do you have any more info about the photo? Where was it taken? When? Thanks. —Khoikhoi 08:12, 3 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, I added it ten years ago, I'll look for the info, but am not too hopeful. Most of the photos are from Wegner and the Kloian book. I will try to get permission on using some of the Wegner photos here as well, however. --RaffiKojian 16:46, 3 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Alright, thanks. —Khoikhoi 16:50, 3 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Great. I found a caption for the image on another website as well, but the source was extremely anti-Muslim and just plain racist ("Bibleprobe.com") , hence the following POV in it:
Turkish soldiers proudly posing with bodies of their Christian victims. To these Muslims, the "Christians were like animals to be hunted."
Perhaps we could change it to this:
Turkish soldiers posing with bodies of Armenians.Khoikhoi 02:06, 6 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Oops, just noticed this note. Yup, sounds good to me. --RaffiKojian 04:31, 14 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

In addition, wherever the photo is displayed there should be a link to http://www.wallstein-verlag.de (the link can be embedded in the name when the copyright is written, in the fashion below:

Andre Agassi

[edit]

hi, i reverted your recent edit to the page because i feel like it's not fully accurate. if we are to use your suggestion then we would have to call him (assyrian-armenian-iranian) which serves no purpose, i believe, when the two ethnicities are mentioned below in the article. further, both those ethnicities fall under iranian anyway, as citizens, so it would be the most accurate.

but if you want to discuss it more, just use the talk page so we can see how other users feel and come to some agreement, i was just rv'ing edits made by anonymous users who offered no reason. thanks George McFly 15:57, 4 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Some questions

[edit]

Hi Raffi, I'm interested in some matters and wanted to ask you. I saw that you're active around here. Could you help? Thanks for your time, I'll really appreciate.

1) What does the Armenian Diaspora thinks or feels about Armenians living in Turkey? 2) How Diaspora children are educated about Turks and Turkey in general? I understand the enmity feeling but it seems it's kept alive by purpose. Is it somehow incorporated to upbringing or parental education? 3) What is the general feeling among Armenians regarding the next steps of some kind of acceptance from Turkish government?

Regards. --Gokhan 07:18, 5 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Gokhan, the Armenioan Diaspora of course doesn't all think with the same brain, there are lots of opinions and difference, so I will answer as I can, but you have to understand that.
1) Well, I guess most of us feel sorry for the Armenians living in Turkey, who cannot even talk about the genocide, whose schools, churches, cemeteries, hospitals, and community property is stolen by the Turkish government under articles from the treaty of Lausanne that were meant to protect them. They are not allowed to do all the things normal communities are allowed to do around the world.
2) Most children are not "educated about Turks". They are taught about the genocide of course, they are told how Turkey denies it to this day, they read how Armenians are treated in Turkey, they learn that Turkey is blockading Armenia and refuses to even establish diplomatic relations, and then they draw their own conclusions.
3) Most Armenians simply wonder, or guess out loud how many years it will take for the Turkish Government to admit to the genocide. I think it will be before 2015. The next step will be an open border though, then diplomatic relations, then acceptance of the genocide... and finally - and I know this causes many nightmares in Turkey (and is the primary reason the genocide is denied so vehemently) - reparations...
Best, --RaffiKojian 09:15, 5 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
OK thanks for the info. What kind of reparations would be demanded? --Gokhan 09:45, 5 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
There are MANY different opinions - almost as many as there are Armenians... --RaffiKojian 03:03, 6 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yes I checked, there are different opinions. From just an acknowledgement to provision of a whole country. Anyway, let's see what will happen. Can you suggest any reliable english news sources concerning Armenia? I would like to read about the developments there. --Gokhan 17:30, 7 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Your comments on latest talk

[edit]

Hi Raffi, thanks for your constructive comments about my suggested approach. I got some heavy fire from Fadix and MarshallBagramyan in the article's talk page. However I feel relief that you understood my approach. I wish we could discuss some matters more freely without prejudice. Anyway I feel demotivated and tired now, but once/if I got the motivation back I'll try to contribute in a constructive way. Thanks again. --Gokhan 04:58, 8 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Raffi,

There's this Armenian Youth Federation, which has goals explained in this link: The Aims and Purpose of the AYF

I see they organize summer camps etc. Do you have any knowledge about their activities? How effective they are in the education of Armenian youth in U.S.? --Gokhan 07:49, 10 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

As far as effective goes, their members definitely believe in those aims and goals. I have no idea how many members they have though - but they are certainly not uncommon. --RaffiKojian 10:50, 10 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I am interested to know the general stances on this conflict, particularly of the USA, Russia, Iran etc...

Now I know that you are a busy guy concerning such topics, so I thought you could help me out.~

My main confusion is that, as I explain in that article, some claim Iran almost intervened on behalf of the Azeri's, while other articles claim Armenia and Iran form an alliance against Azerbaijan and Turkey.

Hi Raffi, greetings to Yerevan from Istanbul, I hope all is fine with you.

I added two articles, French Armenian Legion and Armenian Batallions in other armies during Balkan Wars and World War I, please kindly check and help me improving if you're interested. I don't like the second one, we changed the name of the article twice with Eupator, then I had to add the word "Ottoman Turk" everywhere, not very chique.

Anyway, I'll value your opinions about those.

Western Armenia

[edit]

Raffi, I have a question. What do the Armenians in Armenia think of the situation of Western Armenia? Do they still want to unite with their lost land or is it an idea that only nationalists seem to be in favor of? I'm curious to see what the perception is. -- Clevelander 00:05, 19 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Of course the want Western Armenian lands back in Armenia. Almost half the country has a view of Mt. Ararat looming over it, the very symbol of Armenia, in Turkey. Many of them are descendants of genocide refugees as well. --RaffiKojian 00:48, 20 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, I see. By the way, which Western Armenian provinces in present-day eastern Turkey do you think are of the most important to Armenia and its citizens? -- Clevelander 18:37, 20 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
