Please reread the discussion in Talk:Yerba maté
[edit]EVERY English language authority (dictionary or encyclopedia) uses accented maté. Merriam-Webster lists the unaccented spelling only as an less acceptable alternate usage... under the heading maté. Cf. WP:OR and WP:ENGLISH. With all due respect, the Spanish considerations regarding the accent are simply irrelevant to the discussion, what usage as occurs is largely due to the annoyance of typing accents on English-language keyboard, and the authorities are unanimous. -LlywelynII (talk) 09:13, 27 September 2008 (UTC)
- It might also be important to note that it is pronounced \ˈmä-ˌtā\ in English (check any of the sources listed above; my IPA is crappy but that should be something like [mɒtei]), which is where the accent mark comes from. Indubitably the Spanish pronunciation ([mate], which is completely unused in English) is used in Spanish-speaking regions; it doesn't make it authoritative for English, any more than Lisboa or Roma or Athenai. -LlywelynII (talk) 09:59, 27 September 2008 (UTC)
Yes, in this instance, alternate in only one source out of at least eight (all of them agreeing on the common usage) does mean wrong. -LlywelynII (talk) 10:06, 27 September 2008 (UTC)
- Please continue the discussion in the appropriate article talk page. Rsazevedo msg 10:14, 27 September 2008 (UTC)
John VIII
[edit]Hi Rsazevedo, I saw your very pretty pic of John VIII Palaiologos and would like to use it on the nl. wiki. Would you be willing to move it to commons? Or are there copyright problems? Thanks either way Jcwf (talk) 19:56, 27 September 2008 (UTC)
Ossetic Language
[edit]Hello. I would like you to stop that "edit war". First of all, check the reference properly. Also, I really would like to know what are you doing with the romanised Ossetic text? See the same link (p.22 / line 8). Where did you take that crazy letters? Thanks! Taamu (talk) 06:13, 30 September 2008 (UTC)
