Peer Review
[edit]Hi Racheldeible,
This is Derek from class. I just submitted my peer-review of your article, and wanted to give you some more direct feedback on it here. Firstly, you picked a good article to work on. There is a lot that can be added and improved, but the general structure and framework of the article is pretty sound. Here are some of my recommendations for directions you can take to improve your article:
1)The lead section needs a new and stronger introduction -- one that encompasses more of the topic. Try writing a new one that includes information on the nature and significance of the diseases. 2) Furthermore, the lead itself does a poor job adequately outlining the topic and how it will be discussed in the article. Try doing a re-write where you write one summary sentence for each of the main subject headings of the article. Also, as an aside, I think the Galen quote is misplaced and doesn't add anything to the lead. 3) The content is generally very good. However, there is a lot of emphasis on sewage conditions, while other factors are left underdeveloped. I think more could be said about the bath houses -- for example how often they were used and how commonly. 4) Also, the content is sometimes misplaced or spread too thin throughout the article. It would be better to move certain information into its respective category for clarity and organization's sake. For example, the section "Air Pollution" could be moved from "Diseases" to "Causes." Also, "Alcohol consumption," should be its own heading under "Causes," rather than be under "Sewage." The part about lead in the water systems and containers was really interesting as well. I would make it its own paragraph so it stands out better. 5) The content under "Treatments" is underdeveloped. I think there is a lot of room to add some really interesting content here. Perhaps looking to sources involving Galen would be a good place to look first? It would greatly improve the article and add to its completeness to add content here. 6) Lastly, the lack of any visual material is a severe weakness of the article. I recommend adding this content, such as a map of the old Roman city, or pictures of Galen's medical journals. Anything would help break-up the monotony of the page as it stands right now.
Best of luck with your additions and revisions!
Cheers,
