Welcome to Wikipedia
[edit]Listed below are some brief introductions containing all the basics needed to use, comment on, and contribute to Wikipedia.
- Main Introduction — What is Wikipedia?
- Wikipedia:A Primer for newcomers — A good starting point.
- The Five Pillars — What are the principles behind Wikipedia?
- Quick Introductions to:
- Policies and guidelines — How does Wikipedia actually work?
- Talk pages — How do I communicate in Wikipedia?
- Referencing — How do I add sources to articles?
- Uploading images — How do I add and use images?
- Navigating Wikipedia — How do I find my way around?
- What Wikipedia is not - even though everyone can edit it, Wikipedia is still an encyclopedia.
If you want to know more about a specific subject, Help:Help explains how to navigate the many help pages.
- Google: Wikipedia is very well indexed by Google. Searching for a term, even about an editing question, followed by "wiki" or "wikipedia" usually pulls up what you need.
Where next?
[edit]- Check out Help:Watching pages. Your own Watchlist can become your favorite place to visit.
- If you wish to express an opinion or make a comment, Where to ask questions will point you in the correct direction.
- If you would like to edit an article, the Basic tutorial will show you how, and How to help will give you some ideas for things to edit.
- If you would like to create a new article, Starting an article will explain how to create a new page, with tips for success and a link to Wikipedia's Article Wizard, which can guide you through the process of submitting a new article to Wikipedia.
- For more support and some friendly contacts to get you started, the Editors' Welcome page or the Wikipedia:Teahouse page could be your next stop!

RDowing/sandbox2
[edit]The article you created at RDowing/sandbox2 is not suitable for a Wikipedia article, which must have a notable subject and be verifiable, but it may be a good start for your own userpage. I have moved it to User:RBDowing, which is where you are encouraged to write about yourself. You are free to move it back into the (Main) namespace but bear in mind that if you do so, it is likely to be nominated for deletion.
The purpose of a user page is to enable active editors of Wikipedia to introduce themselves to other editors. Wikipedia is not a general hosting service, so you should not consider your user page to be a personal homepage. Content unrelated to Wikipedia or its editing may be removed.
Please see the user page guidelines, especially this section for more information. GILO A&E⇑ 02:58, 27 March 2013 (UTC)
Heya! Thanks for the feedback. I think I was using the sandbox to experiment with an article on Rick Farman, who founded Superfly Presents, the people who do the Bonnaroo festival, etc. It was nowhere near ready to go! Or, possibly, I was using it to create my user page? (I ended up deleting all of it...I need to give it another shot.) BUT! Now I know where it goes, and thank you!RBDowing (talk) 18:27, 27 March 2013 (UTC)
Oh wait, I get it - It said RDowning instead of RBDowing, which is my user name. Ooops. Thanks again!
RBDowing/Sandbox3
[edit]Hi! I moved your article RBDowing/Sandbox3 to your userspace, as I felt it was unsuitable for the article space. You can work on it there, in your sandbox, and add it to the article space later if you wish. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me on my talk page. Declaration!
[edit]I have a conflict of interest. Kind of. I started editing Wikis because I loved to do it, and eventually people started asking me to work on theirs. Now, sometimes, I get paid. (The vast majority of articles I've worked on are unpaid. Vast.)
I'm diligent about neutrality and proper sources/references, and if I have a lapse in judgment, there's usually been a willing Wikipedian around to edit. I also say no a lot. As in "no, you're not notable" or "no, I can't write that without a third party, independent source."
I still have a lot to learn, but the more articles I work on, the better I get.
I worked in the entertainment industry forever -- I still do -- and my expertise is in music, media, and the music industry. I've also worked for early stage internet companies and magazines, and my last full-time gig was as a talent executive at E!. I was there for 8 years and relied heavily on Wikipedia to prepare for interviews. (Sometimes that was a good idea. Sometimes, not so much. That's why I started editing -- I got tripped up in an inaccuracy while working on a story and corrected articles.)
I know a lot about: Record labels Music industry executives Agents/Managers Touring/Concert industry Music media Cable/Networks/Broadcast Media Bands (particularly The Pixies, Pearl Jam, Oasis, REM and others I'm too embarrassed to mention.) Writers - fiction and non. Celebrity/Tabloid media Yoga Alcoholism/Addiction The Grammy Awards
Here's my blog: Live From The Grayish Carpet
I also have an account under the name JSFarman. Which is actually my name.

File permission problem with File:CherylTiegsBikiniPoster.tiff
[edit]Thanks for uploading File:CherylTiegsBikiniPoster.tiff. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file has agreed to release it under the given license.
If you are the copyright holder for this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either
- make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
- Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.
If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.
If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read the Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Blurred Lines 17:47, 31 October 2013 (UTC)
- Hi Blurred Lines The photo was sent to me by Cheryl Tiegs, who owns the photograph. (It was taken by a photographer for hire.) She has no proof of ownership, though. However, the image was taken between 1964 and 1977 "without a copyright notice" and if my interpretation is accurate, it is in the Public Domain. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:PD-US-no_notice and https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Template:PD-US-no_notice. Alt template at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:PD-Pre1978. If necessary, I can forward an email from Tiegs. Thanks. RBDowing (talk) 17:51, 31 October 2013 (UTC)
- Sorry - I should have used this template -
This work is in the public domain because it was published in the United States between 1929 and 1977 inclusive, without a copyright notice. Unless the author has been dead for several years, it is not in the public domain in countries that do not apply the rule of the shorter term for US works. This includes Canada, China (not Hong Kong, Macao, or Taiwan Area), Germany, Mexico, Switzerland, and other countries with individual treaties. See also further explanation. |
- . Do I add it to the page or does it need to go into the media file? (Not sure how to do that.) Thanks. RBDowing (talk) 17:55, 31 October 2013 (UTC)
