Source code for Templates

[edit]

I wanted to look at source code of templates as I wanted to write some for my use. Interested in Formatting and placement. Unfortuanetly most I saw are protected, How does one check out some samples to get the hang of things? Help me is a good example and does much of what I am trying to achieve as a first step. Even if a template is protected, you can still view the source code and get an idea of how things are operating. As far as "playing around" with template code goes, you can test a template anywhere! Any page on Wikipedia can be transcluded onto another one. For example, {{User:Icez/User Astronomy}} is a template in the User space that displays a userbox. You could set up a trial userspace template at User:Qunal2017/testcode, and transclude it using {{User:Qunal2017/testcode}}.
If you're looking to improve or test code from an existing template, many will have "sandboxes" that you can use to try things out. For example, this page is the sandbox of Template:Infobox cricket team. If you want more help, change the {{help me-helped}} back into a {{help me}}, stop by the Teahouse, Wikipedia's live help channel, or the help desk to ask someone for assistance. To reply directly to me, start your message with {{u|Primefac}}Primefac (talk) 15:29, 12 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
