RM close 2

{{resolved}} Wouldn't it have been better to have relisted Marineland of Canada's RM instead of closing it completely? There was only one comment after I posted substantial evidence of Marineland being the common name and only one of the oppose rationales citing PAGs (WP:NATURALDAB). Clovermoss🍀 (talk) 03:32, 16 April 2023 (UTC)

Clovermoss: Yeah, probably. Vacated and relisted; sorry about that. {{ping|ClydeFranklin}} (t/c) 03:43, 16 April 2023 (UTC)

RM close

{{resolved}} Hi! I was really surprised by your close of Talk:Faizabad_district#Requested_move_14_March_2023. The explanation seemed to assume that the old name was still the common name. But what in the discussion does that assumption rest on? – Uanfala (talk) 09:07, 14 April 2023 (UTC)

@Uanfala: Yeah, I concur that that close was not the best worded (I should've said something like "no consensus on if the offical name is the common name" instead.) {{ping|ClydeFranklin}} (t/c) 20:40, 14 April 2023 (UTC)
That new wording has practically the same meaning as the old wording. There's still the assumption that the official name may not have caught on yet. I'd be curious to know your thinking on this point, and the evidence behind it. Thanks! – Uanfala (talk) 21:20, 14 April 2023 (UTC)
Uanfala, I mainly based this on the fact that ghits, news & scholar supported the status quo, however per namechanges I should've probably gave more weight to the recent results that seemed to give the new title the edge. {{ping|ClydeFranklin}} (t/c) 23:13, 15 April 2023 (UTC)
The ghits etc. that were given at the start of the discussion did indeed seem to support the old title, but they had a basic flaw, which I think I pointed out early enough: they weren't time-constrained, so they included both texts published in the four years since the name change, and ones from the decades before that. The latter shouldn't just be given less weight, they should be discarded entirely: there's no way a text published in 2001 could have reflected an administrative change that occurred in 2018. I believe I was able to show in the RM that those sources that were published after the name change and referred to the contemporary (rather than historical) context, overwhelmingly used the new name. Is there anything I didn't see there? – Uanfala (talk) 08:57, 16 April 2023 (UTC)
Uanfala, don't think you're missing anything. You've convinced me a move close would've been better, but I think it still might be worth a move review since a move failed to gain consensus twice and a moratorium had to be imposed. {{ping|ClydeFranklin}} (t/c) 23:50, 16 April 2023 (UTC)
Hi, I've started the move review: Wikipedia:Move_review/Log/2023_April#Faizabad_district. – Uanfala (talk) 12:41, 22 April 2023 (UTC)

CFD closures

Hello, ClydeFranklin,

If you are going to do NAC CFD closures, please follow through and tag any categories that should be deleted appropriately. For example, I came across Category:Anglophone people and apparently this category should be deleted but it was never tagged for deletion, it still has the CFD tags on it. The other NAC closers do this routinely so please ask them for assistance if the process doesn't seem clear to you. But remember, you can't just close a discussion, you need to make sure that the decision is carried out. Thank you. Liz Read! Talk! 03:23, 19 April 2023 (UTC)

{{resolved}} Hello, ClydeFranklin,

If you are going to close CFD discussions, you have to ClOSE them. That means handling the categories involved in the discussions. In this case, you need to remove the CFD tag from this category, and tag it for speedy deletion including a link back to this CFD discussion (very important). If you don't want to take care of the categories, then please do not attempt to close CFD discussions. Let another, more experienced editor handle this task. You can't do this process halfway, you have to follow through or you aren't enacting a closure decision. If you don't know how to do this, then please ask . Thank you. Liz Read! Talk! 01:47, 30 April 2023 (UTC)

Qwerfjkl: I'm sorry to bother you, but you're the first one of the other editors who frequent CFDs and do close discussions I thought of, so can you clarify what Liz is refering to here? I thought the course of action with that CFD was to close as delete and list it at WT:CFDW. CLYDE TALK TO ME/STUFF DONE 03:00, 30 April 2023 (UTC)
Liz, the category has been listed at WT:CFDW so that it can be handled by a bot. — Qwerfjkltalk 09:13, 30 April 2023 (UTC)

WikiCup 2023 May newsletter

The second round of the 2023 WikiCup has now finished. Contestants needed to have scored 60 points to advance into round 3. Our top five scorers in round 2 all included a featured article among their submissions and each scored over 500 points. They were:

Other notable performances were put in by Sammi Brie, Thebiguglyalien, MyCatIsAChonk, Chicago PCN02WPS, and London AirshipJungleman29.

So far contestants have achieved thirteen featured articles between them, one being a joint effort, and forty-nine good articles. The judges are pleased with the thorough reviews that are being performed, and have hardly had to reject any. As we enter the third round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed in round 3. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Sturmvogel 66 and Cwmhiraeth. Category:Redirects from Uighur-language terms

{{resolved}} Hi, please would you reopen Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2023_May_7#Category:Redirects_from_Uighur-language_terms? This was resolved the other way last year for a good reason at Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2022_August_30#Category:Redirects_from_Uyghur-language_terms, as is linked on the talk page. – Fayenatic London 14:24, 16 May 2023 (UTC)

Oh, hang on. BOTH names are used in the table; I don't know what result is expected in that case. I added a test template on a redirect and it puts the page into Category:Redirects from non-English-language terms rather than the existing Category:Redirects from Uighur-language terms. So I created Category:Redirects from Uyghur-language terms… and the test page DOES go in that one. So, I will process the move, and there is no need to reopen the CFD. – Fayenatic London 15:19, 16 May 2023 (UTC)

CFD Closures

{{resolved}} Thank you for closing multiple CFD nominations at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2023 May 13. It looks like those closures haven't been acted upon yet so I just wanted to make sure you had the directions right here: WP:CfDClosings. {{resolved}} I strongly oppose this move and do not believe there was a consensus for it. Please revert your close. Srnec (talk) 01:20, 26 May 2023 (UTC)

{{resolved}} I would have strongly opposed this one too. It goes against point #1 at WP:SOVEREIGN. I don't know how you came to that move over the one actually proposed. Please explain. Srnec (talk) 01:33, 26 May 2023 (UTC)

@Srnec, I'll reply to both of your threads here.
Regarding German occupation of Hungary: As SnowFire stated, "invasion" suggests Hungarian resistance, which doesn't seem to have happened. While I recognized and understood your arguments against, I feel Peacemaker67's comment refutes this pretty well. The March 1994 event doesn't really need its own article, and rescopes as a result of an RM are common.
Regarding this one: I feel Amakuru's IAR common name argument is strong here. "King Hussein" is much more common than "Hussein of Jordan" or "Hussein, King of Jordan".
Also, as I cited in the King Hussein closing summary, WP:BARTENDER. There wasn't a strong consensus on where to move, but a consensus against the status quo. I stand behind both of these closes and encourage you to take it to WP:MR. CLYDE TALK TO ME/STUFF DONE (please mention me on reply) 19:49, 26 May 2023 (UTC)

Rollback granted

{{resolved}}

Hi ClydeFranklin. After reviewing your request, I have enabled rollback on your account. Please keep the following things in mind while using rollback:

  • Getting rollback is no more momentous than installing Twinkle or RedWarn.
  • Rollback should be used to revert clear cases of vandalism only, and not good faith edits.
  • Rollback should never be used to edit war.
  • If abused, rollback rights can be revoked.
  • Use common sense.

If you no longer want rollback, contact me and I'll remove it. Also, for some more information on how to use rollback, see Wikipedia:Administrators' guide/Rollback (even though you're not an admin). I'm sure you'll do great with rollback, but feel free to leave me a message on my talk page if you run into trouble or have any questions about appropriate/inappropriate use of rollback. Thank you for helping to reduce vandalism. Happy editing! DanCherek (talk) 22:17, 29 May 2023 (UTC)

ReferenceExpander

{{resolved}} Just a friendly heads-up in case you weren't already aware, since it's installed on your common.js: Careless use of ReferenceExpander has caused serious problems. It's currently at MFD, and a large cleanup project is underway to repair the citations damaged by the script. I and several other users have !voted that the script be deleted or disabled, and I wouldn't recommend using it at all unless you thoroughly check every reference it modifies against the previous revision. Administrators' newsletter – June 2023

News and updates for administrators from the past month (May 2023).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, editors indefinitely site-banned by community consensus will now have all rights, including sysop, removed.
  • As a part of the Wikimedia Foundation's IP Masking project, a new policy has been created that governs the access to temporary account IP addresses. An associated FAQ has been created and individual communities can increase the requirements to view temporary account IP addresses.

Technical news

  • Bot operators and tool maintainers should schedule time in the coming months to test and update their tools for the effects of IP masking. IP masking will not be deployed to any content wiki until at least October 2023 and is unlikely to be deployed to the English Wikipedia until some time in 2024.

Arbitration

  • The arbitration case World War II and the history of Jews in Poland has been closed. The topic area of Polish history during World War II (1933-1945) and the history of Jews in Poland is subject to a "reliable source consensus-required" contentious topic restriction.

{{resolved}} Per WP:RMNOMIN, No minimum participation is required for requested moves. If no one has objected, go ahead and perform the move as requested... Emphasis original. Please revise your close. Srnec (talk) 21:06, 6 June 2023 (UTC)

@Srnec: I interpret making a bold move and being reverted as someone objecting. Encourage you to renominate, as I allowed in the closing summary. CLYDE TALK TO ME/STUFF DONE (please mention me on reply) 00:23, 7 June 2023 (UTC)
You said nothing about "renominating" in your closing summary. I'm not even sure what that means. What you actually said was Per lack of participation, ineligible for moving as unopposed. But (1) that's not true, that's not the rule, and (2) it wasn't merely unopposed, it had had an explicit support. Srnec (talk) 01:42, 7 June 2023 (UTC)
What I actually said was Per lack of participation, ineligible for moving as unopposed. NPASR. No Prejudice Against Speedy Renomination. (1) what is the rule then? and (2) that support vote was a weak one which was still skeptical, and doesn't singlehandedly outweigh the reverting reason. CLYDE TALK TO ME/STUFF DONE (please mention me on reply) 17:02, 7 June 2023 (UTC)
I quoted the rule above. "No minimum participation is required", so how can it be "ineligible for moving" for "lack of participation"? You refer to making a bold move and being reverted. To what do you refer? My bold move of 4 September 2019 had the same rationale as the RM: mostly not an archdiocese. This move was undone on 15 May 2023 with the edit summary Fix grammar: Different from document content. You say that the support !vote does not singlehandedly outweigh the reverting reason. But what is that reason? It was a nonsensical reference to fixing grammar.
I've been here since 2005 and never seen NPASR before. I did click the link, however, and saw that it brought me to a page about deletion procedure. It is not normal practice to open a brand new RM exactly the same as one just closed. If you think that is acceptable, I suggest you just relist it. Srnec (talk) 00:32, 8 June 2023 (UTC)
