Ayumi Hamasaki's discography

Hello, Prosperosity. First of all I'd like to thank you for updating Hamasaki's discography page, you did an amazing job. But I'd like to ask you about some things you edited in the singles/promotional singles sections. I'd like to know what criteria you used to consider songs like all the songs from the A and H singles, "Heartplace", "Jewel", "Momentum" etc., as promotional singles, since I haven't seen any information about those songs being promoted as such. In case of "Heartplace" for example, the song was only used in Panasonic TV commercials and performed once on Japanese TV, but I think the song was never released or promoted as a single whatsoever. The same goes with songs such as "Jewel" or "Momentum". "Momentum" was just made a music video to be included in one of Hamasaki's album and that's it, there was no further promotion of the song as far as I'm concerned. You could say "Jewel" could be a promotional single, since it was heavily promoted in TV, but still nor Hamasaki nor Avex consider it a single. So I think it would be a better idea if those songs are putted in other charted songs instead of being considered as singles, and "Heartplace" and other songs should be removed from there since had not a major impact at all. I spent a lot of time thinking about this when I did up Kumi Koda discography, but I've been listing the A-sides of releases like 4 Hot Wave and & as 'promotional singles' while keeping those releases in the singles list, even though technically they are extended plays. However, in a Japanese context these releases are treated as singles, so I figured it was important to retain that. The 'promotional singles' section often includes second tier singles; releases that have been promoted but for whatever reason cannot be considered a proper single, like a single with a radio only release, or an iTunes preceding release. It seemed the best place for these, but this is only my opinion on the matter, it's not something that's been discussed. If you can think of an alternative, I'd be happy to debate/discuss it!

If anything was ever listed as 先行配信 or something similar (i.e. a full-length digital release), I put it in the promotional singles section. If something received airplay, especially if it appeared on the Billboard Japan Hot 100, I believed that was enough evidence to show it had been a promoted song, hence a promotional single.

It is much easier to say whether something has been promoted post 2008 since it would appear on a Billboard chart or have a preceding digital release, but there was a fair amount of guesswork with the earlier releases. I included it if there was evidence of it being promoted for a specific release/reason. I used this reasoning for each:

Heartplace: performed immediately after Rainbow's release, twice: at Music Station Super Live and Hit Best Song 2003.

Rainbow: performed immediately after A Ballads' release, at ayuready, CDTV and Music Fair.

Game: performed and promoted as if it were the second A-side of the Inspire single. Performances at Music Station and Pop Jam.

Jewel: very widely performed in promotion works for Secret. Best Artist, Happy Xmas Show, Hey!x3, Kouhaku, Music Fighter, Music Station (four times), FNS. The response to the promotional works was strong enough for the song to be certified platinum four times.

Momentum: not performed, but the response to the song was large enough for it to be certified gold. I seem to remember a lot of response at the time to this song. Hrrrm...now that I review my thinking, I don't see any evidence of promotion at all, so I'll move it to 'Other charted songs'.

In each instance there is evidence that these songs have been promoted, promoted in relation to another release (i.e. their albums) and deserve higher mention than charted songs such as "(Don't) Leave Me Alone", however could not be considered singles. --Prosperosity (talk) 04:12, 7 September 2014 (UTC)

In this edit you removed the content of the "oricon-positions" reference, so AnomieBOT restored it. In your next edit you changed one of the "oricon-positions" references to use "OriconPositions" instead, but you left three other uses of "oricon-positions" in the article. Thus, AnomieBOT restored the content of the revision to one of those remaining three, and you repeated this process for a few more edits until in Special:PermanentLink/625761697 you finally managed to remove all instances of "oricon-positions". Isn't that what the text at the userpage implies? It says "individual tasks may be stopped by writing any non-whitespace content to various pages under User:AnomieBOT/shutoff/". By attempting to create a page with non-white space content (such as here), I'm presented with a box telling me that if I input data, it'll stop the task. You missed the rest of that sentence: "see the task list below for the specific page corresponding to each task". None of the tasks in the list link to that page. Mami Kawada

Hello Prosperosity. Can you take a look at the aforementioned article? I've been working at the article (of my favorite singer) for more than two years, and my goal is for it to become a good article (it's currently B-class, up from an almost-unreferenced Start-class back when I started working on it). I just did a partial overhaul of some sections of the article, and I'm now seeking feedback and suggestions on how it can be improved further. Thank you. Speaking of that, the articles on her anime-tieups (Shana, Index, Hayate, etc.) already have tie-up information.

Okay, well there needs to be a lot more prose, and a lot of the releases need to be condensed. Instead of:

Kawada released "x" for the anime Y, which reached number 8. Then Kawada released "z" for the anime 1 which reached number 9. Then Kawada released "z" for the anime 1 which reached number 7.

The sections should be grouped better, and the information more processed. Something like:

In 2034, Kawada began releasing singles for the anime SomethingSomething, collaborating with producer xx on these works. The first song, released as the ending theme song for the first series was commercially successful, peaking at number 30 in Japan. Kawada also performed the songs "Something2", "Something3" and "Something4" between 2034 and 2038, all of which shared commercial success.

I know it's difficult for I've singers, but you'll need to collect as much sourced biographical information possible, and document things in her life other than [release1][release2][release3]. The mentions of her tours is a good start. You'll also need a reception page, which collate things professional critics said about the good points of her music, as well as her singing/songwriting abilities (like her gradual increase in writing songs) and collaborating producers. Since I've is so interconnected, it would be good to compare her with other I've acts in terms of sales, genres and reception. I've should also be talked about a lot more in the article, since it's so central to who she is, and explains why she has all of these game/anime tie-ups and releases like she does. I also recommend sourcing some interviews with her about her music and inserting the content from those; since she herself has to look at her own career in these, it's good for showing what's important for her, as well as how to break up an article into sections based on how she sees her career broken up. --Prosperosity (talk) 13:28, 17 October 2014 (UTC)

Big thanks for the great work. I'll try to work on style and reviews soon (the CDJournal link only gives rather short reviews, but given the lack of Japanese reviews for non-mainstream artists like Kawada, any source is helpful). I could work on a Life section, but as you said, finding such information is an uphill battle. I've already tried, but most of the personal information I could find was non-essential trivia. Even her Japanese Wikipedia article isn't of much help (side note: just a pet peeve, but her article there has been semi'd indefinitely, even though her article gets less monthly views than their articles on Attack on Titan, Love Live!, and even her friend Maon Kurosaki, which aren't semi-protected for some reason), given that it's all unsourced, and again, full of trivia. About the only thing I could include is that she has a younger brother. But is a one-sentence Personal life section acceptable, if this is the only relevant information I can find? I think I could find a few more facts about her, which could be sourced to her blog, such as her having grandparents living in Fukuoka. Is this alright?
As for collaborations, maybe all I could do is mention that she mostly works with I've producers Kazuya Takase (whom I've tried to write an article on but couldn't find much sourced information on) and Tomoyuki Nakazawa. Maybe I should state which producer helped her on which song? It should also be easy to write on her work with KOTOKO, beginning with the fact that it was KOTOKO who wrote the lyrics to Mami's first song, and that they both contributed to the Please! franchise, Starship Operators, Shana, Baldr Force, and Hayate. Maybe I should move the information on Healing Leaf and Love Planet Five to the collaboration section, and elaborate on other collaborations? Given that I too feel that the way the article is arranged at the moment (by album) doesn't read very nicely, it shouldn't be too difficult to combine things. Finally, a style section: what would be the best way to do it? Mention her use of trance, rock, etc.?

Re: the producers, I was thinking about something like "for her early eroge songs, Kawada worked with xxxxx. During her major label debut, Kawada switched to collaborating more often with I've Sound in-house producers yyy and zzz, though occasionally still worked with xxx" (but obviously different, showing whatever it was that happened).

Yeah! The Healing Leaf and Love Planet Five would go well in a collaboration section, or perhaps an "I've Sound collaborations" section explaining how she fits into the I've Sound family.

Those facts do sound a little too trivial, and if I were making the article I personally wouldn't use them. If you can find any early 2000s resources, you may be able to find out more about her singing lessons with Eiko and how she came to be a part of I've, which would be good. Oricon singles chart ranks physical sales only, like it's still 1983 or something. Billboard is a composite chart that compiles CD sales, digital sales, radio play, and I think now social aspects like tweets. This means that if a song was very popular as a CD, but nobody played it on the radio or downloaded it, it tends to get ranked lower than you'd expect. --Prosperosity (talk) 01:27, 4 November 2014 (UTC)

According to Billboard, she's only really popular with CD sales. By the way, are anime songs frequently played on Japanese radio or public places? And just how niche are anison singers in Japan? I visited Japan a few months ago and it seems that any trace of late-night anime fandom disappears as soon as you leave Akihabara or specialized anime stores (the exceptions were in pachinko store entrances, which were adorned with Cowboy Bebop and Bakemonogatari art; amusingly, one electronic store there I visited had a stereo which played ClariS' song Click and Luna Haruna's song Ai o Utae). Does this extend to anime music? I visited music stores in Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto, and only one store had Mami's CDs, which was in Akihabara, and the only one among the three that I visited there that had her music in stock. Worse, the salespeople in some of the other music stores I visited didn't even seem to know her (although they all knew Kalafina). I even asked people on the street if they had even heard of Mami; virtually all replied that they didn't know her. Is she, and anime singers for that matter, really that obscure? It depends, really. If it's a regular singer from a major label who just happens to be singing an anime song, like TVXQ or Yui, having an anime tie-up might actually get those songs more radio play. If it's a singer specifically targeting anime fans and is popular among a subgroup of primarily anime fans, they're not going to be popular on the radio. They don't really need to be, since they're consistently popular with a loyal subgroup of consumers who are influenced by things other than radio play. It also depends on the audience of the anime, like how the Billboard #1 last week was the Youkai Watch theme song. Something like a One Piece theme song, a Keion song or Evangelion targeting a general audience would get lots more radio play than something specifically targeting anime fans specifically.

I don't pretend to know everything about music, but personally I'd never heard of Mami Kawada before! Though this doesn't really surprise me, since looking at her sales, her popularity seems to be linked to how popular each anime she was singing for, meaning I'm probably outside of her target audience. --Prosperosity (talk) 05:41, 11 November 2014 (UTC)

Just am update on article progress. After holding back for a while, I wrote a "musical style and influences" section. I don't think it's much good, since it's too focused on "Joint", but I guess I have to start somewhere. I do plan on expanding it some more eventually. I went through her interviews, and there wasn't much information I could use (most were just personal questions which had nothing to do with her musical style in influences). I couldn't even find any information on her musical influences, so all could put was the part on Alanis. By the way, I'm having second thoughts on whether or not the article needs a collaboration section anyway. I've gone through Supercell (band) (a good article), and its organization, structure, and writing style is very similar to Mami's article. Maybe this means Mami's article is good enough? As for tie-ups, you mentioned that the organization of how her songs should be done should be changed. This is fairly difficult to accomplish, as unlike Supercell's releases, Mami's songs for a tie-up are released in different years (for example, 2005, 2007, 2009 and 2012 in the case of Shana). Finally, could you help and fix and add content where necessary? For the most part, I feel that the biography section is more or less acceptable, but it would be nice for there to be a longer style section, and perhaps more information on her collaborations with I've. Wikipedia is a collaborative effort, and it's very difficult for just one editor to do all the work, particularly for niche topics such as anison singers. Also, I've tried looking for personal information (as you said, finding such information for I've singers is very hard to pull off), but sadly I couldn't find anything at all. Not even information on her life before Eiko's vocal class. Perhaps it's time to call it a day and request for a copyedit, then nominate it for GA? 1) About the Kohaku announcements, and now May J. was chosen to sing Let It Go instead of Matsu. A record company insider said that NHK had planned on having a special Frozen collaboration, featuring May. J, Kanda and Matsu, however this collapsed on Matsu's side. Matsu did not approve of the project, much to the surprise of the industry insiders, as she had participated before in 1996 and 1997. The fact that she did not say yes to the project became a talking point among the industry. When it was announced on the 27th that she was pregnant with her first child, many insiders realised why (NHK source).

His name is incorrect? I don't think it is... Well, yeah it is spelled "Ken Hiirai", maybe that's what they said lol (atleast I think, I'm not fluent when it comes to Hindi!). Yeah, someone at Arama said that the Indians in Japan often thought he was an Indian, and so he wanted to pay tribute/respect to them and decided to do it. He was in New Delhi for two days or so.. JA Wiki says there are two different PCs for For You and Time Limit. The main For You one was recorded at her Secret Live, while the main Time Limit was from the first day of Bohemian Summer. They broadcast the secret Time Limit and BH For You as well for special programs and stuff, so I think that's that. I couldn't find proper sources for that though, and to be honest I'm not really sure if it matters (one concert vs. another two weeks apart where she wears the same things and has the same hair and the vocals are the studio version). --Prosperosity (talk) 05:41, 20 December 2014 (UTC)

They're mostly discussing Kei Nishikori's success, and some of the similarities between the manga characters (and their matches) and what went down. The interviewer mentioned that Shuzo Matsuoka might have brought all the manga volumes with him when he was touring (like at the 1995 Wimbledon Championships), but the way they bring up the info means it's unsourcable here (you'd have to find someone who said that as a definite statement and not as a "he might have" statement). It's edited so much, maybe to make her sound younger or something? I noticed this in Kana Nishino's latest song "Suki" as well. What's up with this trend? Go for it! I've seen a lot of research that implies that people older than 20 should have similar language learning abilities as younger people (due to the brain's plasticity), just that as you get older you become more concerned with different things (e.g. kids are more likely to give things a go no matter if they look silly or not, which is really important in language learning). You're already interested in music/anime/stuff, so you have something that will push you to learn more (instead of like, learning Latin if you're not interested in European history or something). --Prosperosity (talk) 06:23, 13 January 2015 (UTC)

Doesn't seem to be a cert for it! Sometimes things got overlooked in the 90s.

They removed everything pre-2005ish, but on the other hand they added separate chart positions for DVD and blu-ray items. Some of them are still accessible through web archive, but web archive was a bit spotty with Oricon pages. The old and new systems use the same artist numbers (new list is http://www.oricon.co.jp/prof/7057/products/, the old list still uses 7057), so a lot of artists should still be archived.

You've listed a bunch already. They were a group I wasn't actively archiving, so without combing the whole thing again you won't know!

Ok! I'll have a look around. A google search tells me Le Velvets and Starmarie but I've never heard of either of them! Korean groups seem a lot more interested, apparently Super Junior, BTOB, A-JAX, Block.B, A-PRINCE, B.A.P, 2NE1 and Big Bang have all performed in Manila. There are quite a few singers who have Filipino blood, like Mayumi Horikawa, Chieko Ochi, Rikako Sasaki, George Ai, Sayaka Akimoto, Alan Shirahama, Megumi Nakajima, Reimy and Kenji Roa though! Certainly will consider your pointers, some already knew, but thanks again, especially on WP:Charts. However, although personally wouldn't remove the information on the Hot Singles Sales (as have correlation with the Oricon weekly chart) and Top Airplay from the "Charts" table, because give perspective on release chart, but see the point and agree with the guideline.
