Hello PrepRed. The nature of your edits, such as the one you made to Draft:Houman Owhadi, gives the impression you have an undisclosed financial stake in promoting a topic, but you have not complied with Wikipedia's mandatory paid editing disclosure requirements. Paid advocacy is a category of conflict of interest (COI) editing that involves being compensated by a person, group, company or organization to use Wikipedia to promote their interests. Undisclosed paid advocacy is prohibited by our policies on neutral point of view and what Wikipedia is not, and is an especially serious type of COI; the Wikimedia Foundation regards it as a "black hat" practice akin to black-hat search-engine optimization.

Paid advocates are very strongly discouraged from direct article editing, and should instead propose changes on the talk page of the article in question if an article exists. If the article does not exist, paid advocates are extremely strongly discouraged from attempting to write an article at all. At best, any proposed article creation should be submitted through the articles for creation process, rather than directly.

Regardless, if you are receiving or expect to receive compensation for your edits, broadly construed, you are required by the Wikimedia Terms of Use to disclose your employer, client and affiliation. You can post such a mandatory disclosure to your user page at User:PrepRed. The template {{Paid}} can be used for this purpose – e.g. in the form: {{paid|user=PrepRed|employer=InsertName|client=InsertName}}. If I am mistaken – you are not being directly or indirectly compensated for your edits – please state that in response to this message. Otherwise, please provide the required disclosure. In either case, do not edit further until you answer this message. Jamiebuba (talk) 21:58, 12 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

As previously advised, your edits, such as the edit you made to Draft:Houman Owhadi, give the impression you have a financial stake in promoting a topic, but you have not complied with Wikipedia's mandatory paid editing disclosure requirements. You were asked to cease editing until you responded by either stating that you are not being directly or indirectly compensated for your edits, or by complying with the mandatory requirements under the Wikimedia Terms of Use that you disclose your employer, client and affiliation. Again, you can post such a disclosure on your user page at User:PrepRed, and the template {{Paid}} can be used for this purpose – e.g. in the form: {{paid|user=PrepRed|employer=InsertName|client=InsertName}}. Please respond before making any other edits to Wikipedia. Jamiebuba (talk) 07:18, 21 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
My apologies for not responding, I'm unfamiliar with the Wikipedia process and layout so I wasn't sure how to do so. I can confirm that I am not being directly or indirectly compensated for my edits or creating the Wikipedia page for Houman Owhadi.

Undisclosed paid editing

[edit]

Your first edit at Wikipedia on September 11 was to add a WP:COI template to your userpage regarding the article you created about Houman Owhadi. Your next edit was to create the draft. Your third edit was to remove the COI template from your userpage. On September 12, another editor posted a COI notice here on your Talk page in the section "September 2023", which clearly said you had to respond to the notice before editing any further at Wikipedia. Yet, you ignored that post and continued to edit the Owhadi article. Please explain your actions. If you don't, you risk being blocked for undisclosed paid editing.--Bbb23 (talk) 13:23, 21 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
When I created the article, I believed that the COI template applied to my editing of Houman Owhadi page. However, upon reviewing the article concerning conflict of interests, it does not apply to me which is why I removed it from my userpage. I apologize for not responding before making edits, I'm unfamiliar with Wikipedia's layout and wasn't sure how to do so.
I can also confirm that I am not receiving compensation, directly or indirectly, for creating and editing the page.
Best, PrepRed (talk) 16:16, 21 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Why did you believe the template applied to you? What's your relationship with Owhadi? You don't have to be compensated (monetarily) for creating the article to have a conflict of interest.--Bbb23 (talk) 17:15, 21 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I have met him in person once in the past, but our relationships doesn't fall under the "family, friends, clients, employers, or financial relationships". PrepRed (talk) 17:34, 21 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Based on your answer, I ask again why then did you believe the template applied to you?--Bbb23 (talk) 17:54, 21 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't read the article describing what a COI is. I thought that knowing the person was sufficient to constitute a conflict of interest, but this isn't the case. PrepRed (talk) 17:57, 21 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
One more question: do you know Smth snail (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log)?--Bbb23 (talk) 18:05, 21 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
No, I don't know what that means. PrepRed (talk) 18:06, 21 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It's another user who created a sandbox about Owhadi in 2022. No matter. Thanks for answering all my questions.--Bbb23 (talk) 18:40, 21 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ah I see. Not its a coincidence, I don't know who that is. No problem! PrepRed (talk) 20:26, 21 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
