MINDS ARE OPEN ONLY WHEN HEARTS ARE OPEN
Maybe you've seen this slogan on the television, papers or a magazine. Maybe you've heard it from a friend or stranger. Maybe this is the first time you have heard of it.
You can read all of the books about spirituality, you can take all of the workshops, and you can discuss what you learn with all of your friends for years, but true spiritual understanding will not come until your heart is truly open, and it can communicate with your head. Intellectual understanding is not a bad thing, and it is often the first step on the path. But in order to progress, we must take it further. We must integrate our mental knowledge with our emotional selves. We must know it in our heart
  Open Hearts

“Hearts are to be enclosed”

Most people believe that their hearts are open, when in fact they are barricaded in some way. This doesn't mean that people aren't kind or loving. It just means that they are still protecting themselves by shielding their hearts from the things that they believe will hurt them emotionally. Everyone learns to do this; it's our natural defense mechanism. Our challenge, however, is to unlearn it. Fear makes us close our heart: Our heart closes some more, as we try to keep out anything or anyone that we believe will threaten this view of the world or reinforce this belief by rejecting us. In effect, we close our heart to make our world a smaller and "safer" place. When we close our heart, we fool ourselves into thinking that we're keeping all of the painful emotions away, but they are still there. And worse still, if we maintain this lock on our heart, love can't find a way in.
  Open Minds

"The mind is like a parachute, it works better when open."

How very true! With closed minds, change may never come. With closed minds, we can never appreciate the side of a friend. With closed minds, we cannot truly share in the thoughts of others. It is only when we open our minds that we can create a true community with each other and with God. We can open our minds to new ideas and concepts. We can grow in faith. We can gain much-needed knowledge of the world and people around us. With open minds, we can work together and make the world a better place.
Most people, when they hear about the heart ruling over the mind, imagine a cold, calculated and stuck-up neurotic. So we have to explain that when the heart is ruling the mind, it does not mean that the heart is at the top of the chain of command. Nobody wants the heart in charge--you'd never get anything done. The mind may be great at solving puzzles, but it's an incompetent idiot when it comes to real life. Rather, the mind is meant for the soul.
You see, the soul has some great ideas to express. But the soul needs to get the body involved in that vision and those ideas. And it knows the only way that can happen is by inspiring the heart.
To make this more real: Let's say you're a musician. You know your inspiration doesn't come from the mind--it comes from somewhere beyond that. But a lot of the time, it doesn't come at all. Your heart has to open up, tune in to something beyond itself. Then the juices flow and you can play with your mind to be clear emotion.
But, on the other hand, all the time you are playing, you have to keep that heart in gear. If it slides out of the clutch and the mind takes over alone, the depth of the music is lost. Like jazz musicians say, you have to stay cool. That's what we call "heart over mind."
Okay, let's say you're not a musician. But maybe you like playing football. The same dynamics apply: If your heart is not into it, it would not gonna work. But if you let your heart go wild, you're not going to be on the league for too long, that is, hearts power is up to mind.
So some people lose the mind and get caught up in the heart. Others forget about the heart and become wrapped up in the mind. Neither way is good. The point is to get the soul to express itself in the mind by reaching through the heart.
Getting this mind-heart thing down is not easy. First of all, during your initial exposure to life known as childhood, you are basically an emotional animal, with little chance that the mind will have control of anything. Secondly, even once you grow up, the whole world is out to make you "just react" to stimuli. After all, as long as you have control over your own brain and heart, it's kind of hard to sell you stuff you don't need and get you to work all those extra hours to pay for it.
The only reason we don’t open our hearts and minds to other people is that they trigger confusion in us that we don’t feel brave enough or sane enough to deal with. To the degree that we look clearly and compassionately at ourselves, we feel confident and fearless about looking into someone else’s eyes.
When our heart is open, it can work in harmony with our head. Our mind is not the ruler of our heart, or vice versa. They must work together and balance one another, but this can only happen if our heart is open. When we reach this place, we can communicate from the heart, and we can heal ourselves, our society, and the earth. There are people alive today who still know how to do this, who still knows the language of the heart. Often, they are described as "primitive," or unadvanced, but the truth is that they are our teachers. They know, and they remember.
