Robben Island University

[edit]

Ive chosen to write about the Robben Island University. As an 11 year old I was fortunate enough to visit the prison and South Africa and I remember thinking how fortunate I was for my education, something I had always taken for granted. I find this topic inspiring in the way that during the repression that the prisoners suffered at this time, along with unfair justice, they found ways to make there experiance better and to further thei education. Despit the awful conditions the men had in prison , they didn't fall but used it their gain to educate one another and fight against the apartheid, Mandela even coming out the first black states man. Therefore we see an alternative to what would be viewed as typical education, one of passion that came through with strong and positive outcomes. Pollyjoke (talk) 19:47, 20 October 2021

source 1. In this article an American professor talks about education within prison as a great force for social change . Having visited the prison on Robben Island the professor, who is now also an educator within the prison system, talks about education within said system to create resistance to injustice. Robben Island is the perfect example of this, with the prisoners fight for justice during the apartheid.

This source is written by Aaron Bady from Indiana University Press on behalf of the Hutchins Center for African and African American Research at Harvard University. The source talks about how the Robben University enabled the men who were prisoners there to come out as better people. Prisoners described it as 'a place of gain to them, rather than a place of pain'.Examples of the educational gains they came out with ranged from basic literacy skills, to full law degrees.Within the article the author includes conversations he has previously had with the prisoners who experienced the gains of Robbenn Island University.

Peer Review 1. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:TS1602/sandbox#Reference_List Positives:

.I like the introduction think it clearly puts forwards the topic spoken about and the issues faced, While introducing EE as a way forwards.

.The structue is great with a very clear layout, making it a nice read for the viewers.

.The statistics given are effective as they really enables the reader to understand how poor the educational facilities and system in South Africa is.

.Great insight given into the problem of sanitation and how it has been dealt with.

Improvements: . The referneces are not sighted throughout backing up the statistic and imformation given and while references given are good the amount is slightly limited.

.Could use another example of lack of resources and problems that arise for those in South Africa interms of education , alongside the example of sanitation. Including how they may have improved, or may not have been improved since the charity EE has come around.

.could talk more about the inequalitys mentioned that individuals face in South Africa leading to their poor or lack of educatiomn e.g lack of food ,poverty, discrimination.

. Imagery used is good, could use more imagery to give the viewer a better image of facilities ect.

2. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Jasminecory/sandbox Positives:

.I like the start with the explanation of the word Harambee within the culture, Good picture given into the firght against opression that was faced at the time in kenya.

.Lots of sources used with a range of information.

.Good imformation about how Harambee came aound and how it has been sustained , important for the readers understanding

. I like the use of statistics allows for a better understanding of what Harmbee has achived or the lack of education faced

Negatives :

.structure could be layed out better to break the article up a bit. Including subtitles clear paragraphs ect.

. Although great range of refences they could be sighted throughout.

.A better picture could be created with the limited resources , a better picture of the poor education system eg facilities ect . So then the reader can better understand how much the creation of Harambee schools have helped.

. Pictures can be good to help the viewers create a better image.
