How do you do this?

[edit]

I was just taking a look at the pics on this page. I would like to know how you take these pics? Do you charter a plane with the express intent of taking pics or you make the most of opportunities presented? The Silent Contributor 17:40, 23 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm using your [Image:Kerala locator map.svg] in my new article Protected areas of Kerala but can't get the national parks to display. I did it OK for Protected areas of Tamil Nadu though. Check it out. A little help please?-Marcus 13:16, 25 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Kerala locator map

[edit]

Thanks a lot for fixing the Kerala locator map at Protected areas of Kerala. I've added more NPs to it and tried to add India inset map similiar to that at Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary but couldn't get it to work. Can you fix that too?

During the 70's, I spent about 3 years in India, mostly in Madurai and Kodaikanal designing and building water pumping windmills for irrigation for Oxfam India and Govt. of India, Indian Council of Agriculture Research under M. S. Swaminathan.

I hope to return next winter to hike and photograph in some of the PA's I've been working on. Hopefully I can meet some of the Wikipedians I've encountered in the PA articles. First goal is to take an intensive refresher course or tutoring in spoken Madurai Tamil, any suggestions? -Marcus 05:39, 5 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Unspecified source for Image:AirIndiaExpressLogo.gif

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:AirIndiaExpressLogo.gif. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 02:03, 8 July 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. OsamaK 02:03, 8 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:KingfisherAirlinesLogo.gif. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Request for pictures from Chennai

[edit]

Hi Planemad,

I see that you have contributed an awesome collection of maps and pictures, especially of Chennai. Great Work!! I was wondering if you would be able to help me with some pictures for an article that I have been working on: Sources of ancient Tamil history. I'm looking to add some relevant images to the Archaeology, Epigraphy and Numismatics sections. I found that the Univ. of Madras has a Dept. of Archaeology in Chepauk (Triplicane) and a museum there in which they have preserved items recovered from various sites in Tamil Nadu. It would help if you could take pictures of some items (like coins, inscriptions, pottery etc.) belonging to say around 300 BCE - 300 AD that are on display and post them here in wikipedia. This is their website: http://www.unom.ac.in/ancient1.html, it contains phone numbers of the dept and the professors.

I live outside India and so won't be able to go about acquiring the pictures myself until my next visit. I really appreciate any help you could offer. Thanks. Lotlil 16:46, 18 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

YOu have already listed it at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Deletion_requests/Image:Chennai_schematic_map.svg Although doesn't seem you will get it deleted. It's the rsvg support what should be improved. Which are the missing fonts? I reverted thisedition because it tries to import a png from outside. Which obviously fails, you can't see it properly, and broke mediawiki thumbnailing. Platonides 11:11, 21 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It's impossible that it's "no longer" under a free license. They are not revocable. Platonides 10:56, 22 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
No. But i don't see why, having a version of it on wikipedia prevents you working on them. Platonides 11:04, 22 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You can make new versions for Chennai MTC without publiishing it on Commons. And yes, other people could modify it (eg. adding a new bus stop) and even sell it, but
a) They would need to credit you as for the original work you did
b) Their work would still need to be free. You could sell their work, too ;)
c) Why would anyone pay for it if you provided it free of charge?
Platonides 11:16, 22 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Copyleft licenses are supported by copyright. If no one gives a shit about your copyright, well, it's a different problem. But then, they could also copy it from the work you're giving to Chennai MTC instead of the free version from Wikipedia. You would still have the reason in the courts, though.
I answered it above: No. You don't have the right to pull it off. If it could be done, wikipedia wouldn't be so free, as hundreds of images/articles could be needed to be removed for the requeriment of an angry wikipedist. You can still kindly ask it to be removed.
Also note that if you died tomorrow, and you were the only one with the original image, all the work would need to be redone from zero, while having it available, allows anyone to improve it when needed (if complyig with the license). Platonides 11:41, 22 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Graphics Lab Announcement

[edit]

Attention All Wikigraphists!

[edit]

As you may or may have not noticed, the Graphics Lab pages have gone under a massive cleanup by User:DTR, User:Rugby471 and various others (sorry if I missed you out). Some of the things that have happened are.

  • All pages in the Graphics Lab have had, where sensible, templates, substituting elements. For example, the main Lab page was a large chunk of around 100 lines of pure code. It was not very easy to edit the main page, so the various sections of it (eg links, welcome) have been separated. Therefore the main page is now only around 20 lines of user friendly text. If you wish to edit the main page, you must look on the main page for the correct template to edit. (Fore example if I wanted to edit the links section, I would go to Wikipedia:Graphic Lab/links and edit the text there). This has been done to all of the pages, in an attempt to make them more user-friendly.

  • As you were notified of early, the Wikigraphist Abilities page has been set up and has been beginning to get populated. If you haven't already setup your own entry, you are advised to go and do so now.

  • Due to a comment from User:DTR. A template for Graphics Lab announcements has been created. It is at Wikipedia:Graphic Lab/announcement. If you ever need to issue a message to Wikigraphists, please use this template in the form

{{Wikipedia:Graphic Lab/announcement|message ~~~~}}

Where message is the announcement you wish to issue.

  • On the Images to Improve Page, an issue was noticed where that when requests were completed, people were adding {{Did}} but forgetting to add <!--werdnabot-archive--&gt so that the request would be archived. Therefore a template has been created (yes another one!) to help with this. When a user creates a new request instead of putting the usual code, they shall put

{{Request Title|title=Lorem Ipsum|done=false}}. Now when a request is completed, all you will have to do is change done to true

done=true

and the template will add the {{did}} template and also <!--werdnabot-archive--> to the title, so it will get archived.

As always, if you experience any issues with the new changes, or are just a bit confused, please don't hesitate to contact me or DTR on our talk pages.

Maping standards guidelines for ALL Wikipedias

[edit]

Hello Planemad,

I was working to set up such standard, and your help may be really welcome. Please see : commons:Commons:Project_Mapmaking_Wiki_Standards, the bottom being a draft-letter for you. The talk page is the true place where contributors should work.

Since I'm leaving Wikipedia and Wiki commons, I don't want spend much time to improve this "letter", and I simply post here to request your contribution and leadership. The contributors of the Indian maps project are especially welcome.

If the standard may be set up and perfect for december 2007, that will be great, and the graphic labs will be able to start the work.

Hello again, can you give me your opinion on this, allowing me to look for an other leader if need. Yug 08:16, 4 October 2007 (UTC)
That's fine, I'm also leaving wikipedia because I can't manage my real-life-project well AND the free-wiki-projects that I like. I made the choice : my real life and studies are the most important.
So thanks for the work you previously done, and good luck to you in the real life ! Yug (under IP) 11:57, 5 October 2007 (UTC)

Image:Indian revolt of 1857 states map.svg

[edit]

There is a serious error in the above message. Nepal is not a state of India and has never been a state of India. Nepalese Rana Regime had supported British East India company but Nepal has never been colonized by British, thus should be listed out of international boundary.

I understand that you are busy person, but please make necessary changes to the image at the earliest, as such errors are considered very derogatory by Nepalese people, including myself. I have added above mentioned lines in errata section, however I suggest you to make changes in the image at the earliest, as such issues are very emotional for Nepalese people. Nepal is currently in a fluid situation and some sad elements in Nepal might make a big issue out of such things and misuse the information to play on emotions on Nepalese people if they see this image. I think as responsible human beings we should not let such things happen.

Just for your information, in the past, there has been wide scale riots in Kathmandu causing death of at least 2 individuals just because of rumours that Indian Actor Hrithik Roshan made derogatory remark on Nepal.

Please refer to following link for quick reference to the history of Nepal since its unification in 1768: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/south_asia/country_profiles/1166516.stm

Since we are talking about British Rule, I think BBC website is the most authentic source. I dont think you will find any mention of Nepal's independence and sovereignity being compromized at any time in the history since its unification.

[edit]

I came across your map while making some grammar corrections in History of Nepal Page. The ruling family of Nepal had indeed supported British East India Company at that time. The point that I trying to make is that Nepal's current border as independent country/state was established in Anglo-Nepalese War of 1814-16. The "state" I am refering to is an independent country or an independent state, and not a state of India. Since Nepal has never been colonized by British East India Company, and had her sovereignity affirmed in 1923 Treaty with Britain, long before independence of India, I feel totally offended with you listing Nepal as an Indian State. The condition of Kashmir is a completely different one, as a part of it is currently under control of India.

Kathmandu2007 17:55, 4 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Image:Indian revolt of 1857 states map.svg 4

[edit]

Thanks for your prompt response !!

You can not list Nepal as an Independent State under the heading of "Indian states during Revolt of 1857" and "Map showing the Indian princely states" list of, as Nepal was neither of these. You should put Nepal out of international boundary in the map. You may put another heading stating Nepal as an independent country supporting British. However since the map is concerned with Indian states you may not even include Nepal. Most of the Nepalese people supported the Indian Independence movement, with many of political leaders like Krishna Prasad Bhattarai of Nepal being arrested in Indian Land for supporting Movement of Independence. The tyrant Rana dynasty which supported the British East India Company during 1857 was overthrown by democratic movement in Nepal under the leadership of Nepali Congress in 1951. The mere use of word "State" here under the heading "Indian states during Revolt of 1857" and "Map showing the Indian princely states" implies Nepal as an Indian State, and thus creates an error in Map.
