Women in Red 8th Anniversary

In July 2015 around 15.5% of the English Wikipedia's biographies were about women. As of July 2023, 19.61% of the English Wikipedia's biographies are about women. That's a lot of biographies created in the effort to close the gender gap. Happy 8th Anniversary! Join us for some virtual cake and add comments or memories and please keep on editing to close the gap!

QR-Codes

Hello dear Andy!

I recently came across the "myth of QR codes" because a museum in Germany (whose members we receive a lot of content from) wants to equip its exhibition with QR codes. The first steps were successful, the museum even conducted a field test in the exhibition to evaluate the usability. That's fine, and it's just like what military folks used to do on their projects. Now we have a number of (international) QR codes that were created for this project in c:Category:QR codes from exhibits of the military technology study collection in Koblenz.

Since I'm involved with the German Portal:Military and because we have many museums that we support more or less intensively, I looked around, found Wikipedia:WikiProject QRpedia and since then I've been wondering what has happened to this project since 2012. The only issue I found working is the server on https://qrpedia.org/ that creates these very useful QR codes.

Could you please give me a few clues as to what happened to this project? In fact, in Germany we talked a little bit about the problems, trying to understand the story. The goal is to find a sensible way to support QR codes for our GLAM projects and museums. Also, we wonder if it would be a good idea to have some integration with wp:commons and with Wikidata.

I would be happy to read some enlightening lines from you. Best --Tom (talk) 17:16, 20 July 2023 (UTC)

What happened to QRpedia appears to be "nothing"; as far as I can tell, Wikimedia UK have done nothing to promote or develop it for several years. You could contact them for further information. User:Christoph Braun has been involved in some QRpedia deployments in Germany and may be able to advise further in that regard. Hi Tom, feel free to contact me by mail about the QRpedia project at Hamburg Museum. I'd be glad to assist you with your QR project at the Koblenz Defence Technology Study Collection. Regards, Christoph Braun (talk) 22:08, 20 July 2023 (UTC)
Hello dear Andy!
Thank you so much for your explanations. I feel this was (and still is) disappointing for everyone that the possibilities for and with Wikipedia have not been used better so far. In 2012, the time for further applications in Wikipedia was probably not yet ripe. The project was probably too far ahead of the curve at the time. In my view, there are individual approaches here and there that deserve to be considered and supported. Based on this experience, it probably makes sense to think about embedding and linking the various Wikipedia projects. As a first step, I will gladly accept Christoph's friendly offer so that we can look for opportunities together.
Best regards --Tom (talk) 08:39, 21 July 2023 (UTC)
I agree with your summary Tom (and Andy's). Wikimedia UK were in my opinion risk-averse rather than opportunity-aware but to be fair its the membership who could drive this. I was involved with about a dozen projects and I had ideas for how to create a QRpedia 2.0 but it would require a funded project to launch it. When QRpedia was gifted to WMUK then it was given the use of free consultants for a year and it undertook to keep it running forever. I'm sure they would support a re-launch (if a fire of enthusiasm began). Roger aka Victuallers Victuallers (talk) 12:28, 21 July 2023 (UTC)

my story today

On today's Main page, you can find a cantata that Bach first performed 300 years ago, and an iconic saxophonist from East Germany. Also: a bit about the history of QAI on my talk. Thank you for being a formative part of it! - A new member designed a user box that I adopted. -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:57, 18 July 2023 (UTC)

While today's DYK highlights Santiago on his day, I did my modest share with my story today, describing what I just experienced, pictured. I began the article of the woman in green. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:10, 25 July 2023 (UTC)

Today I remember Jahrhundertring, and I'm listening to Götterdämmerung from the Bayreuth Festival (pictured), - the image (of a woman who can't believe what she has to see) features also on the article talk, as you may remember. I had reason to look up inclusions of infobox opera today: 1,667 ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:50, 31 July 2023 (UTC)
