Updated DYK query Did you know? has been updated. A fact from the article Dutch Golden Age painting, which you recently created, has been featured in that section on the Main Page. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the "Did you know?" talk page.

Beer

[edit]

Hi Piet. Thanks for the heads up on the Beer article. No, I haven't got it on my watch list. I don't think I have anything on my watch list! I suppose I should start doing that. Anyway - I put my comment on the peer review. I feel that Beer needs a lot more work. People are still working on it. Give it enough time and it really will be a splendid article. In the meantime - keep drinking! Cheers! SilkTork 13:34, 7 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

VWN en WCN

[edit]

Beste Pietdesomere,

Groeten, Fnorp 08:21, 13 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi back

[edit]

Yes, lots has happened with Cortes and related articles. Lessee. We started by moving stuff to Spanish conquest of Mexico and some stuff to Siege of Tenochtitlan. You were around for that.

I wound up looking at the Aztec article and, of course, Cortes is mentioned there as well so I started cleaning up that article. Initially, I was just interested in moving stuff out of Aztec and into Spanish conquest of Mexico. However, I wound up getting involved with Aztec in general. I wound up working on Aztec religion and Human sacrifice in Aztec culture in particular.

In the process, I met (via Wikipedia) a Mexican expert on the Aztec civilization (User:Nanahuatzin) who writes a lot but with very poor English so I and some other editors clean up after him. He has been responsible for some of the text added to Spanish conquest of Mexico and Siege of Tenochtitlan.

These articles related to Aztec civilization in the 1500's (time of Hernan Cortes) is one of my two main areas of work in Wikipedia. The other is Global warming.

I'm glad to shorten articles by moving text to subsidiary articles. Just identify for me what you think are the articles that need shortening and give me your ideas of how they should be shortened.

See ya.

--Richard 09:23, 21 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Piet is short for "Pieter", no?

[edit]

Your user page says that "Piet" is short for "Peter".

Nah, "Piet" is short for "Pieter" and "Pete" is short for "Peter".

Just being picky...

--Richard 20:46, 21 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hmmm... OK, you say that "Piet" is short for both "Pieter" and "Peter".

Maybe my problem is that I don't know enough Dutch. I always assumed that "Pieter" was Dutch and "Peter" was English. Are you telling me something different?

Your name is "Peter". Is that an English name or a Dutch name? How can you have a Dutch shortening (i.e. "Piet") of an English name (i.e. "Peter")?

BTW, you're from Ghent, Belgium. What do they speak there? Flemish? Is that relevant to this discussion at all?

I'm sooo confused. Us Americans are so parochial.  ;^)

--Richard 21:10, 21 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Aztec template

[edit]

Did you create that the Aztec navbar template? If so, could you tell me how that's done?

I had a picky point about the Cortes article. It struck me as a little weird having the Aztec navigation template on it but I realize now what the problem is and how we could fix it.

The problem, as I see it, is that the Cortes article should have two navbars on it, one for articles about the Spanish colonization of the Americas with asection for conquistadors (e.g. Pizarro, DeSoto, Balboa, etc.) and another for Aztec articles. The Spanish colonization of the Americas navbar should be above the Aztec navbar.

I would be glad to put the Spanish colonization of the Americas navbar together if you could give me a pointer to documentation explaining how it's done.

Thanx.

--Richard 00:16, 24 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Never mind... I figured it out. I just created a template Template:Spanish colonization of the Americas. It probably could use some work and it's only used in the Hernan Cortes article. Feel free to improve the template and copy it to other articles if you wish.

--Richard 06:02, 24 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Take another look at the Hernan Cortes article. There is now a Template:Spanish colonization of the Americas and Template:Aztec lower down. I'm not completely sure about the positioning of these two templates but the idea is that Hernan Cortes is part of both topics whereas the other conquistadors wouldn't be part of the Aztec topic.

I'm not sure what you are thinking should be moved out of the Cortes article. Can you be more specific?

--Richard 15:40, 24 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re: shortening of template name... um, I was aware that the name was kind of long but I couldn't think of a better name. Maybe spanishconquestamericas. There is a pre-existing template {{History of Peru}} so it's questionable whether every template name has to be continguous non-blank characters. My biggest issue with making the change now is that we have to go back and change all the articles with that template (about 10) unless redirect works for templates too.

I've also started a template {{Inca}}. My plan is to add a template {{Maya}}. and then link all of these under another template {{PreColumbian Civilizations}}. .

Happy Wikiing!

Lesser Antilles

[edit]

Are you sure Trinidad and Tobago are part of the Lesser Antilles? I've never been quite sure of that one. Do you have a good source that definitively includes them? Guettarda 11:33, 29 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm pretty sure that the Virgin Islands are not part of the Lesser Antilles. I don't know if TT should be considered part of the LA or not. The truth is I'm not sure I've seen anything definitive ones way or the other, and I think it's important to have a solid source for things like that. For example, at Lesser Antilles, the reference doesn't sound defintive, and there's nothing to say exactly how closely the article follows the reference. Perhaps the reason I am most inclined to distrust the list is the statement "The Lesser Antilles can be divided into the Windward Islands in the south and the Leeward Islands in the north." Since the Virgin Islands aren't part of the Leewards, and Trinidad and Tobago aren't part of the Windwards, I am disinclined to trust that list. There really needs to be a good reference for that list. Guettarda 12:39, 29 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject Belgium

[edit]

Hallo,

Groeten, Evilbu 13:39, 16 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hallo,

Hi Piet,

...someone asked to change the wording of this template, but now it's very confusing. "Should belong in a category" seems redundant, although technically it could be right. What makes it confusing is that belong can indicate where something is but also where something should be (hence redundancy with the first should). I think you better change it to "This article should be in one or more categories". Piet | Talk 13:40, 5 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Aztec protection

[edit]

Hi there Piet, long time no chat, and a belated New Year's greetings. I agree that it's about time to remove the semiprotection at Aztec, so I've now done this. Just for future reference, removing or adding the {{sprotect}} template itself does not change the protection status of a page, the action can only be done by someone with administrative rights. The template is there more so for informational purposes, and to categorise the page as a protected one (the instructions there aren't all that clear). To request a change in protection status, you can go to WP:RFPP, and/or leave a msg on the talk page. Anyways, we'll soon see whether the tedium of schoolyard vandalism returns- cheers, --cjllw | TALK 01:44, 1 February 2007 (UTC) [reply]

Jan van Eyck

[edit]

I will revert you back, as van Eyck is always indexed under E in English, as are most von's and de's indexed under the main surname. See the National Galleries in London or Washington , or EB. Most Dutch historical names with a van are in fact indexed in the "Dutch" way, although Van Gogh seems to be an exception. This is covered in the policy you quoted re Beethoven etc, although I think rather misleadingly. Modern footballers appear to be different. Johnbod 17:59, 18 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Further to this, the Manual of Style page on this has now been changed, to reflect what is in fact normal English practice, in so far as this can be quickly summarized. Many Flemish artists are now therefore incorrectly sorted, which I start correcting. In case of uncertainty, I think the Getty Union List of Artist's Names is a very authoritative resource.
