The Resource Exchange help desk

[edit]

Hey. New year, new start? Well, I recently added a navigation box to the Resource Exchange. One of the features is a help desk, where I'd like to put a couple names of people willing to answer questions about searching for resources. Since you already described yourself as someone willing to help in the 'Direct contact' section, I thought you might be interested. What do you think? Key (talk) 00:02, 9 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Concerning the vandalism of Saab Lofton's page (and the sources as well)

[edit]

Since I couldn't find a way of e-mailing Steve Dufour, please forward the following to him:

http://www.saablofton.org/announcement.html

For the record, I never asked to have a Wikipedia page ...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Saab_Lofton

Is this guy notable? 68.230.135.102 02:32, 3 December 2006 (UTC)

I'd say he's notable, he wrote a few books. I met him today, quite an interesting character. Decided to look him up. 24.22.229.243 10:06, 1 July 2007 (UTC)Chris Jr.

... but if you'd rather delete my page than deal with this stalker by simply, permanently locking it down, fine. Just make sure NO other Wikipedia page has the name Saab Lofton on it. Believe it or not, whoever this STALKER is is that obsessed ...

Steve Dufour: "I've looked into the books listed in the bibliography... The first was published by a small defunct anarchist publisher which describes itself as publishing 'pamphlets', sold out and was not reprinted."

III Publishing printed novels as well. Half of the first printing of A.D. sold within its first year. Granted, the first and only printing consisted of two thousand copies, but don't punish III Publishing or myself for being poor. Besides, look at these reviews ...

http://www.mcn.org/e/iii/books/iiirevs.htm

http://www.slimeworld.org/innerjourneys/ij06fant.html

http://www.mcn.org/e/iii/adreview.htm

http://www.mcn.org/e/iii/politics/practicl.htm

Steve Dufour: "The second was described by Pop Occulture Magazine as 'obviously a low-budget and quite-possibly home-printed affair'."

Jarvis Marlow is the man who paid out of his own pocket for the second printing (one thousand copies) and third printing (two thousand copies) of Battle Neverending. His phone number is 702-469-9188. I sold all three thousand copies of Btl Nvrg within the span of a year. Tim Boucher's Pop Occulture review was a petty act by someone gratuitously snide and stuck-up. As you can see ...

http://www.amazon.com/Battle-neverending-Saab-Lofton/dp/B0006R7DVQ

http://www.theseattlesinner.com/Pages/books/neverending.html

... Boucher's in the extreme minority.

Steve Dufour: "I'll keep an eye on it. I also find it a little hard to believe that he was kicked out of San Francisco State for writing a novel that was 'too radical.'"

Believe it ...

http://community.seattletimes.nwsource.com/archive/?date=19981101&slug=2781130

Lofton wrote "A.D." while a student at San Francisco State University and spent so much time hawking the book when it was published three years ago that his grades began to fall and the university cut off his financial aid.

... too radical means I "spent so much time hawking the book" because I had to overcompensate for all the censorship surrounding the book. CORPORATE censorship, NOT the stereotypical Stalinistic kind all too many assume is the only kind that exists. Had I an easier time "hawking" the book, there'd have been more time for classes. Of course, plenty of wayward students have had their financial aid renewed after having missed classes for far less substantial reasons, so one wonders why was it so important for me to be dismissed ..? Unfortunately, I'm no stranger to censorship ...

http://www.lasvegascitylife.com/articles/2005/04/28/letters/letters.txt When you start censoring yourself and others, e.g. Saab Lofton, because you’re afraid you might upset some rich white assholes then you might as well give up any claim to being liberal and progressive because you’re not. YOU'RE MORE WORRIED ABOUT CIVILITY AND THE INCLUSION OF E-MAIL ADDRESSES THAN THE DAMAGE THIS STALKER CAN DO, HOW INCREDIBLY SAD. Question

[edit]

Hello Phoebe, I see you declined adminship above. Well, I've looked through some of your contributions, and saw that you revert vandalism. Would you like me to grant you account rollback rights to help you revert vandalism more easily? Just remember that rollback should only be used to revert vandalism, and that misuse of the tool, either by revert good-faith edits or revert-warring, can lead to it being removed. In addition, you don't have to go through any RfA-like process to obtain the tool: I can grant it to you right here. Tell me what you think. Thanks. Acalamari 23:39, 25 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Not really necessary; the undo button is fine :) replied on Acalamari's talk. phoebe / (talk to me) 23:53, 25 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, there isn't a special "edit review" screen with rollback. Instead, you can still check revisions manually using the "diff" button. The rollback button appears in diffs, so you'll be able to tell the difference between a good-faith edit and someone inserting "sdhiasbhdsfbsdsd" into an article without having to worry about making a mistake. With need, that's not too much of a problem: I have more trust in an administrator who uses the tools occasionally and effectively than one who uses them often and abusively: I hold that view with rollbackers too. :) Anyway, I'm not going to press the issue, if you'd rather revert vandalism without rollback, then that's fine. :) Best wishes to you. Acalamari 00:04, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I know where the rollback button is! I run a few wikis of my own :) What I meant is, because you're not forced to check the diffs on rollback -- you can do it from the history page etc., rather than from an individual diff comparison -- it is easy to either revert good changes along with bad, or miss subtle vandalism that was spread over more than session. For this reason, I'm not a fan. Rollback is useful in very limited vandal-whacking circumstances, which is usually not something I take part in... Anyway, it's hardly a big deal one way or the other. Cheers, -- phoebe / (talk to me) 16:25, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, sorry about that. :) Thanks for your response and civility. :) Happy editing and best wishes to you. Acalamari 16:33, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

SF meetup in mid-December to help scientists become Wikipedians?

[edit]

Hi Phoebe, this is Bill Wedemeyer from Wikimania; we met on the last night in Alexandria? I hope you got home alright; my trip to Cairo was a small adventure, but after that, it was pleasantly uneventful.

I'd like to get your opinion (and possibly help) on something pretty important. The American Society for Cell Biology is holding a "hands-on" workshop on December 16th for two hours (12:30–2:30pm) to teach its interested members how to edit scientific articles on Wikipedia. In the absence of anyone else initially, I volunteered to help out, although luckily for me and for them, Tim Vickers is now able to come, too. We'd both like this workshop to go well; for one thing, success with the cell biologists could lead to other opportunities for Wikipedia with other scientific communities. We don't know yet how many scientists will show up for the workshop.

Tim had the excellent idea of a "buddy system" for the scientists, organizing online Wikipedians to help the scientists in their first forays into the Wiki-world. A natural extension of Tim's idea is to invite real-world Wikipedians to meet up there and help scientists through their first editing. I think it would help build friendly bridges between two communities, Wikipedians and scientists, who share a common goal of making their science accessible to the public. Since two hours is such a short time to explain Wikipedia and give them some "hands-on" experience, having enthusiastic, friendly Wikipedians helping out could make it a much less stressful and more enjoyable experience for everyone.

What do you think of that idea? Is it feasible or sensible? I'd appreciate your suggestions on that, or other aspects of the conference; if I remember correctly, you're experienced in running workshops such as this one, aren't you? I started this skeletal subpage as a central place for discussing/planning the workshop. Thanks for your help, Proteins (talk) 21:05, 28 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Scripts

[edit]

Hi Phoebe, congratulations on your book! The reviews seem to be excellent, don't you think? I somehow missed the fact that you and Charles had written a book on Wikipedia. I ordered a copy already, along with the new book on the MediaWiki software.

The Wikipedia seminar with the cell biologists is coming in December (less than 2 months away), and I'm beginning to prepare in earnest, now that I've finished off some grants and teaching. In particular, I've started to think about how to make editing as easy as possible for them, using scripts. For practice, I've written a few basic scripts, and if you have time, I'd appreciate your feedback on them. There's information on how to install them on my user page. They (1) translate the interwiki links into English, (2) analyze the structure of articles, such as the amount of prose in each section, and (3) remove the hyperlinks from an article so that they can be heard spoken smoothly using Fire Vox (a Firefox add-on) or another screen reader. You might enjoy listening to your favorite articles in Fire Vox, which is free and pretty easy to download and install.

I'm still working on script (2) ("articlestructure.js"), so be warned that it may stop working from time to time. It's mainly for my research, but if you have any article properties you'd like to have analyzed, please don't hesitate to ask.

Longer-term, I'm interested in making scripts for accessibility and scripts that facilitate the writing and analysis of Featured Articles, perhaps even a WYSIWYG editor. I'd appreciate your suggestions for scripts, although I might not get to them quickly. Thanks! Proteins (talk) 17:42, 21 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia Governance

[edit]

Dear Phoebe!

I hope that you are fine!. I am Mayo Fuster Morell, we met at the fascinating Free Culture Conference. Here there is a picture of me in case you do not remember my name: http://www.onlinecreation.info/photos/ I just finalized reading your book. My deep complements, it is very well written and a pleasure to read. Following what you put me in the cover, it is making me enjoy even more Wikipedia. As I mentioned to you I am doing a Phd action research on Wikipedia Governance at the School of Information - UC Berkeley and the European University Institute. And I would be very happy on making you an interview and exchange with you impressions on my hypothesis. I would appreciate if you could let me know if it would be possible that I make you an interview. If by any change it would be possible to do it in the Bay Area, it would be easier for me. However, I also can come to Davis for the interview. The results of the research will be availeble open access (More on the research: www.onlinecreation.info).

Thanks in advance. In solidarity! Mayo >>> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Lilaroja —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.143.92.200 (talk) 03:17, 3 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Two favors

[edit]

Hi Phoebe, two quick favors. First, if you're going to the SF meet-up on the 8th, could you please invite people to help out with the American Society of Cell Biologists on December 16th? Just to refresh your memory, it'd be great if there were up to 20 good editors to help the scientists start their first articles and to give them a positive impression of Wikipedians. The organizers of the conference have kindly offered to take all the volunteers out to lunch beforehand — free food, yum! We'll meet at the Mosconi Center at 11am to go to lunch. The workshop will be over by 2:30pm, but if people need to leave early, that's cool, too.

As for the second favor, I've been writing a few more scripts that Wikipedians' might find useful, as listed on my user page. If you have some time, I'd appreciate your and Charles' help with one in particular, User:Proteins/expandWPacronyms.js, which expands Wikipedian shortcuts/acronyms such as WP:NOR for newbies. For example, it replaces "WP:NOR" with "WP:NOR (Wikipedia's policy that no Original Research should be published in Wikipedia)". I was trying to find a happy solution that would allow expert Wikipedians continue to use their shorthand without making newbies feel excluded. I got the idea for the script from reading your (excellent!) book and from Liam's interview with Sue Gardner on the Wikipedia Weekly. I'm writing the summaries in parentheses according to my best understanding of the acronym, but I'm aware that I might make mistakes. I've also been expanding the dictionary of shortcuts, but I'm getting only about 90% of the acronyms so far. If you find that I'm missing common or important shortcuts, or that I've explained shortcuts inaccurately, I'd appreciate your suggestions. I had no idea that there were so many shortcuts in common use! But writing the dictionary is a good way to become familiar with Wikipedia's policies, guidelines and structures.

Your book is a lot of fun and very enlightening. Two suggestions: for the next edition, you might want to include a list of shortcuts in another appendix, and to mention the possibility of definition lists, when you start a line with a semicolon. I'm biased in this, but you might also want to mention how scripts are great for enhancing and customizing one's experience on Wikipedia. :) Proteins (talk) 00:13, 6 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Phoebe, I just read your well-written report on "Wikimedia events". In the intro, you reference a person who was helpful with responding to "the EC green paper". OK to use some images from book?

[edit]

Hi Phoebe, I was wondering if you'd allow me to use some figures from How Wikipedia Works in my workshop slides for the scientists. I know the book is covered by the GFDL, but I felt I should ask for your blessing, especially considering that you'll be in the audience. Thanks! Proteins (talk) 01:27, 26 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

yes of course; sent you an email. -- phoebe / (talk to me) 21:40, 2 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks very much, Phoebe. :) Can I ask yet another favor? In preparation for the workshop, I'm trying to find good instructional videos for common Wikipedia tasks, such as creating a user account, general editing, images, references, etc. Do you know of any, or do you know people who could point me in the right direction? I'm not finding many in English, although I've found some delightful videos in Icelandic and French. If my luck doesn't turn, I might have to bust my Camtasia out of mothballs and prepare some myself. Thanks for your help, Proteins (talk) 02:01, 4 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, Phoebe! I would be grateful if you could ask around about instructional videos. I managed to eke out a tutorial video today, with my rusty Camtasia skills. How does it seem to you? I could probably dash off a few others before the workshop... Proteins (talk) 00:42, 5 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wish to Create New Wiki Article/Biography

[edit]

Phoebe,

Though I am somewhat savvy when it comes to the Internet, I am admittedly a green pea when it comes to what might be required in order to add a new article/page to Wikipedia.

I work for a nationally-renowned speaker/author/trainer, whose expertise is on the recruitment and retention of the newest generation of workers. We have been advised by some experts in the speaking industry to add his profile/bio to Wikipedia.

I'd appreciate any help you can give me and would love to be "adopted" by someone as well-versed on this process as you. I can be reached at christie@generationwhy.com.

Thank you!

Preparations for the ASCB workshop

[edit]

Thanks for your advice on the workshop, Phoebe. I'm sorry that the tutorial video didn't download. :( It's pretty long (19 MB) in the OGG Theora format, especially when compared to the MPEG-4 format (6 MB); perhaps that's a sign that something went awry in the translation?

I've prepared a PDF of my slides for the workshop; may I e-mail it to you? You shouldn't feel obliged to look them over. But if you have an idle moment, I'd appreciate any comments that occur to you. Your book and earlier suggestions were helpful in thinking through the presentation. Tim has looked the slides over already, and I've incorporated his suggestions.

Thanks for the tip about wikEd! One of my slides uses the wikEd coloring, without mentioning it by name. We may suggest wikEd to the scientists, once they get their feet wet with editing. Tim and I will probably play it by ear, depending on how well the workshop is going. Proteins (talk) 12:24, 7 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

USF

[edit]

Thanks for your note. I try not to bite the newbies, but I also wanted to clear out the cruft that can accumulate if unchecked. I left a note on the USF talk page about other resources that should be incorporated. I've also gone through and tagged some sections with cleanup templates. I look forward to seeing how it turns out. Madcoverboy (talk) 04:04, 9 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Phoebe - you really need to talk to the students. They have now resorted to vandalism (see Madcoverboy) because they are so attached to their blatant cruft.Iulus Ascanius (talk) 00:53, 10 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Will do, via the professor. Note that it's not actually my class, but I'll do my best. -- phoebe / (talk to me) 04:55, 10 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Oops, sorry. The way you said you'd help clean up, I thought you were the professor. Thanks!Iulus Ascanius (talk) 05:20, 10 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
np. It's not my class but I did give them a lecture about wikipedia and offered to keep an eye on the whole project, which is why I said I'd help clean up :) best, -- phoebe / (talk to me) 05:26, 10 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That's pretty cool of you, helping infuse new blood. Here's the contrib list for the winner:
