Sorry I have just reverted your edit on this article. You do not add parent categories. "Chemistry journals" is in "Scientific journals", which in turn is in "Scientific literature", so you only use the first category. I got caught by this earlier on. --Bduke 23:47, 29 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No problem. However, not using both parent & sub- categories for the same article is not a hard and fast rule; I think it depends on what is most helpful. See:

Wikipedia:Categorization/Categories_and_subcategories. In this case, I would argue to keep the 'scientific journals' categorization along with 'chemistry journals', as this list of chemistry journals is fairly unusual and deserves a wider audience among people who might be looking for all information about scientific journals but might not think to look by individual discipline. I agree that scientific literature is overdoing it a bit. Brassratgirl 00:17, 30 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I sort of agree, but have had so many of my edits of this kind reverted. Put 'scientific journals', but I suspect that someone else will revert it at some stage. --Bduke 00:28, 30 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds good. Categorization has sort of gotten out of hand, anyway... plus, I don't think people think it through very well. BTW, the list is very impressive! Nice work :) Brassratgirl 00:36, 30 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, but it is still mighty incomplete. I went through the British Royal Society of Chemistry web page and added all their journals (lots) but there are still a lot of American Chemical Society journals and Japan journals missing. We also needs less redlinks there. I finally helped get concensus on List of scientific journals for 10 general chemistry journals. We added the top 10, but 5 still are redlinks! --Bduke 00:44, 30 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I wonder if there is home for historical scientfic/technical journals somewhere? In the UK in the C19 there were periodicals like Mechanics Magazine whoch started in the 1820s. In France there were journals like Annales Des Mines which began about 1810. Apwoolrich 08:00, 30 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

MANIA

[edit]

Not a bad idea. I'd be open to doing something like that; were you talking about starting it right now, or a bit closer to Wikimania? Ral315 (talk) 17:16, 9 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Technically, the deadline's at 17:00 UTC, but if you can't get it in by then, just do it as quickly as possible. I probably won't publish until later tonight anyway. Ral315 (talk) 12:54, 10 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Far be it for me, but!

[edit]

Hi! Far be it for me to tell you how to write an intro, but don't you think:

A) you in this should define terms?
B) How's a new editor to know the context? Why do I have to goto your user page to confirm what I thought I might be reading (a conference/convention) from whatever else? Me thinks you are too close to de trees to realize others can't see your forest! <G>
C) Why not put the link you have on your user page top center in the article as {{main| [Link Project Notice Page]}}' or somthing else 'illuminating and revealing.
D) Also add in the logo too!

Best regards, the once confused FrankB 14:41, 3 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Right; the conference was pretty well defined in the first and third signpost articles in the series, which are linked on that page. I'm sorry the article was confusing, though, as the purpose of the article series is, indeed, to show others our forest :) Thank you for the suggestions and we will try to add more links in the future. For future reference, the Wikimania site is http://wikimania2006.wikimedia.org. Best regards, Brassratgirl 07:58, 5 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

IMHO, It's not the links you need, but a one or two line explanation (a 'recap') of what wikimania is. Your first article (?), err, 'post' did that pretty well. I did find and follow the link. Best! FrankB 08:34, 5 May 2006 (UTC) btw- the funny part of this is the site is a mere three miles from where I lived most of the last twenty years -- I'm about 15 miles farther out now, but I'll be there! :-) Right now I got to get some sleep! Seattle stuff, and question

[edit]

B,

A note from the blue, as it were. I came across you in the context of some Seattle work, and being also a most reluctant exile, thought I'd point out a new article or two on some Seattalic topics. See KBO and Waiting for the Interurban. Emmett Watson requires an article and Troll-a-ween remains to be done, but as I never attended, I'm leary of even trying. I can only dream of a proper WP article on Troll-a-GoGo.

And then I have a question regarding WP style and stuff. If you consult Talk:Treecat, at Future..., you'll see some nascent discussion regarding possible featured candidacy. In your editorial, professionally organizing, opinion, what is the proper (if any there be) position? ww 19:14, 30 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wikimania registration

[edit]

Joe! Hi! Two things: first, I am terribly sad that I'm not attending SIFF this year, and I actually thought about flying back for a weekend to go (perhaps I will, if a special comes up :) ); and second, I wanted to let you know that wikimania registration is now open here: http://wm06reg.wikimedia.org, if you didn't already know. Are you still planning on attending? I hope so! cheers, Brassratgirl 06:01, 31 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for asking, but it's unlikely. (Not sure where you got the "still" from, I was never particularly expecting I could make this.) Assuming my current contract is renewed, I'll be hard at work, most likely in Bucharest at that date. Of course, if I'm unemployed it's much more likely... - Jmabel | Talk 19:46, 31 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Fresh water

[edit]

Thanks for your edits to fresh water, which led me to your user page. I'm also rather fervent about citing sources. Glad to see a sister in arms, so to speak! --Ginkgo100 03:42, 6 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Meetups, events, local chapters

[edit]

Hey brg,

A quick fyi for the terminally busy : there's currently some renewed discussion about whether and how to set up [a] US wikimedia chapter[s]. Among other things this could help better organize meetups, gatherings at large events and cons, and local outreach. I'm notifying people who have been actively involved in local meetups; if you are interested, there is a quiet mailing-list and a meta-page on the topic... both of which could use input and ideas. +sj + 17:24, 17 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Phoebe! 'Twas no rumor you remembered, just me expressing my intentions. And I have already registered, paid for a plane ticket & am hoping that the rooms at Harvard are air-conditioned. Looking forward to seeing you there -- llywrch 21:24, 25 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wikimania Signpost Article

[edit]

Ral315 isn't around this week so I'm not sure what you're going to do about this article. Maybe you should just postpone it until next week. The problem is that we don't have Ralbot to go in and edit this into everybody's talk pages that subscribes to the Signpost. If you'd like, you can go ahead and publish it on the subscription template and front page for this week. --Randy Johnston () 17:43, 4 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Alright, nevermind. Michael went ahead and published it on the main signpost page and on the template. Thanks! --Randy Johnston () 20:00, 4 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

mania template:abstract

[edit]

Hey. Interesting point -- the assumption I'd made was that 'License' on the abstract template refers to the license of the full paper (including the abstract): are you thinking we should consider having the abstracts licensed under different arrangements to the full texts? I'm not sure that would be a useful situation.

If we are going to go ahead on the basis of the GFDL (which everyone seems to be more or less in agreement that we are) then I thought it made sense to make sure that the proceedings said so ASAP rather than letting people get the wrong idea early -- I'm quite happy for the change to the template to be reverted if you want to consult the contributors first.

In any case, though, the Wikimania wiki already says on every page 'content is available under GNU Free Documentation License', though, so we'd already tacitly indicated that the abstracts were there under the GFDL.

Help with 1970 articles

[edit]

Hi Brassratgirl, If you no longer help find sources I apologize in advance. I am researching this article: LANSA Cuzco Crash and would love to have more sources. One critical piece of information I need is the LANSA flight number, which I have yet to find anywhere. The NYT search of the time period comes up with some potentially useful articles[1] but they require a paid subscription of some kind to dig in, which I am trying to avoid, in the hope that someone already has one. If you could possibly help, I would be very grateful, and I thank you for your time in any case. Crum375 00:15, 6 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Suggestion

[edit]

Hi! I'd like to suggest certain signpost 'regular' sections—such as the one I've been searching for 'Wikipedia' in the News— be inter-connected with the succession template (example: here) or a template like that used by WP:AN (Template:Administrators'_noticeboard_navbox_all), which would come to dominate the page. In any event, some easy interconnected browsability would be appreciated. // FrankB 06:06, 10 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wikimania - registration and scholarship

[edit]

Hello, I'm sorry for using this page for a personal issue, but this is an issue related to Wikimania and it is quite urgent. I applied for a scholarship in order to buy a flight ticket to Boston. You asked me by e-mail if I received your acceptance notice. In fact I didn't get it, and I have to know whether my request is aproved. I didn't register because I won't be able to come to Boston unless I have the scholarship. Please let me know what is your decision, so I know whether to register and prepare for a journey. Thank you, Dror Kamir, Tel Aviv, Israel Drork 16:56, 24 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I received the e-ticket. Thank you very much! Drork 00:20, 26 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

more on mania template

[edit]

Hey. I think it's important we remember that these are the proceedings, not the programme: as such, whether or not we have the text of the paper is in one sense the most important piece of information on the page. Similarly, from that point of view the time that the presentation was given is irrelevant. (If we do want to use the proceedings as a substitute programme, then fair enough, but the time/session information should be removed after the conference.) --ⁿɡ͡b Nick Boalch\talk 11:38, 27 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The explanation can probably be 'read the Guidelines for Contributors', since that explains clearly what the statusbar is for. --ⁿɡ͡b Nick Boalch\talk 23:51, 28 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, and also we should say 'send us the text of your paper'. :) I sent a separate email to you about writing to all the contributors about submitting their texts; I'd like to get this done sooner rather than later if at all possible because I'm going to be away from 4th-21st August (taking a play to the Edinburgh Fringe) and I'd like to have as much as possible in place before I disappear. --ⁿɡ͡b Nick Boalch\talk 23:54, 28 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ocenography/Fisheries Interest?

[edit]

Hi. I visited your User Page. (I liked it.) How interested are you in fisheries? I added the following to the Fishery article:

"The cover story of the May 15, 2003 issue of the science journal Nature – with Dr. Ransom Myers, an internationally prominent fisheries biologist (Dalhousie University, Halifax, Canada) as the lead author – was devoted to a summary of the scientific information. The story asserted that, as compared with 1950 levels, only a remnant (averaging 10%) of all large ocean-fish stocks are currently left in the seas."

I feel this information is vitally important for thinking individuals to understand. Actually, this sort of info needs to be expanded, in my opinion (see the Fishery "Discussion" page, where I wrote an appeal).

Would like to hear from you. Visit my page and write a message on the Discussion page, or E-mail me. Joel Russ 22:46, 1 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello and Thank you for helping. The list of articles I need has actually expanded a bit. Can you get microfilm of the articles? I need the photographs in this articles as well if possible in PDF or tell me how to get them myself. Thanks

I'd like your opinion of the current discussion on Talk:List_of_academic_journal_search_engines, about reorganizing his group of pages. If I remember right, those were all tagged g6 (housekeeping), all had 0 members, and looked old (the latest one I deleted was, I think, Aug. 2006).
