China

why did you revert my edit? the version you edited lasted olny 1 hour and 10 minutes, while the one i restored was in a similiar form since this article was created, so why do you oppose it, we dont use the governments own propoganda as form of government, and you version is not even a "form of government" is it by its own article People's democratic dictatorship is a phrase incorporated into the Constitution of the People's Republic of China. Dannis243 (talk) 22:12, 21 August 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for the message Dannis243 and you've answered you're own question. "People's democratic dictatorship is a phrase incorporated into the Constitution of the People's Republic of China.", so that's what it should say in the article. Maybe you should talk to Trust Is All You Need, who made the change and is well versed in issues like this.  Philg88 talk 22:24, 21 August 2014 (UTC)
have you actually read anything i wrote on your talkpage??!! its a phrase not a form of government! Dannis243 (talk) 22:30, 21 August 2014 (UTC)
@Dannis243: Hello again. It may well be a phrase, in fact one from Chairman Mao, but it also has its own article, which indicates that it's pretty fundamental to the constitution of the People's Republic of China. Whatever you may think, the best place to discuss this is at the Talk:China page. Best,  Philg88 talk 22:44, 21 August 2014 (UTC)
@Dannis243: (since I was redirected to this page)... " In explicit terms the Constitution stipulates that all power in the People's Republic of China belongs to the people. That the people are masters of their own country is the essence of China's democratic politics. By stating that the People's Republic of China is a socialist state of the people's democratic dictatorship led by the working class and based on the alliance of workers and peasants.. Its an ideological concept/form of government which evolved from the Soviet idelogical concept/form of government of people's democracy. --TIAYN (talk) 23:57, 21 August 2014 (UTC)
While you're both more than welcome here, as I suggested above, I'd be grateful if you'd take this conversation to Talk:China. Thanks,  Philg88 talk 04:17, 22 August 2014 (UTC)
  • Re my talk page - for the record, by "status quo" I'm referring to the fact that that particular version has been in the article (a Good Article) for some time, indicating some level of consensus. It should thus be the version to remain in the article until a talk page discussion/consensus dictates otherwise. Also, WP content is based neither on "facts", nor "opinions", but on reliable secondary research, as the talk page comments are once again reiterating. bridies (talk) 11:42, 22 August 2014 (UTC)
Hi bridies and thanks for the message. I'm all in favour of a talk page discussion, which is why I've suggested it several times. My apologies for the use of the word "facts" in place of a rambling monologue about reliable sources. "Facts vs opinions" is more succinct in my view. See you at Talk:China. Your request for adminship

Your uniform just arrived from the Wikimedia Shop.
I am an administrator, I have received only item of upper body underwear

Hi Philg88, I have closed your request for adminship as successful. Congratulations on the strong and unanimous support for your request; you also secured a place on WP:RFX100! As always, the administrators' reading list is worth a read and the new admin school is most certainly available if you feel that you might require some practice with the tools in a safe environment prior to applying them elsewhere. All being said and done, good luck with your adminship! Acalamari 09:31, 21 August 2014 (UTC)

  • Welcome to the corps. I see you put in an access request, presumably for the admin IRC channel . It'll be nice having someone else as the newbie there instead of me . Congratulations. Go Phightins! 12:20, 21 August 2014 (UTC)
@SmileBlueJay97: Thanks for your support!  Philg88 talk 17:30, 21 August 2014 (UTC)
Thanks, UltraMario64, I appreciate it. Still nothing from BracketBot though :( Cheers,  Philg88 talk 09:20, 22 August 2014 (UTC)

I'm not here going to give you a cookie though, cause I don't have that much money , but I've a heart and brain to use which don't cost money. So using my heart and brain I say "Congrats for becoming an admin without any oppose. " --Pratyya (Hello!) 13:26, 22 August 2014 (UTC)

I appreciate your support Pratya, thanks. No cookie, no problem—it's the thought that counts. Cheers,  Philg88 talk 16:01, 22 August 2014 (UTC).
BracketBot is an idiot. But on behalf of Jimmy the Bot I congratulate you again :) Jim Carter 17:34, 22 August 2014 (UTC)

Hello, Philg88 - I just happened to notice your perfect score of support for administratorship. Congratulations for that, I'm sure you'll do a fine job. Cheers - John

  • @Sphilbrick: Always nice to see a message from a fellow map enthusiast, especially one like this. Sorry to see that no one has picked up your map request for US regions at the map lab. I'm a bit tied up at the moment getting to grips with the tools, but I haven't forgotten our conversation - maybe next week? Best,  Philg88 talk 16:12, 22 August 2014 (UTC)

To repeat what I said on another talk page, I missed the excitement on your coming into what you called your "janitorial" duties, so belated but lively congrats and hopes that like Janus, the namesake of janitors, you will happily look after beginnings and doors and portals for a long, long time! ch (talk) 20:43, 23 August 2014 (UTC)

Congratulations. I couldn't comment in support on your RfA, but good work with your 100% supports. We really need more people like you editing pages about Hong Kong and China. Wield the mop with caution. Good luck! Epicgenius (talk) 01:11, 24 August 2014 (UTC)

Congratulations on the unanimity of your RfA! —Mz7 (talk) 01:09, 24 August 2014 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that you've added some links pointing to disambiguation pages. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

That, my dear DPL Bot, is because Flying car is a disambiguation page.  Philg88 talk 09:36, 24 August 2014 (UTC)
The bot picked up these links because you removed the piping of the links through Flying car (disambiguation). This is done (per WP:INTDABLINK) so that those of us at WP:DPL who fix disambiguation links know that the links are intentional. -Niceguyedc Go Huskies! 09:49, 24 August 2014 (UTC)
Many thanks for that, Niceguyedc. So is "Flying car" OK as it stands or do I need to do something else? Cheers,  Philg88 talk 10:43, 24 August 2014 (UTC)
Not at all. I've already set the hatnotes back to pipe through the (disambiguation) redirect, so these links are fixed (the bot will be happy :) ). -Niceguyedc Go Huskies! 10:44, 24 August 2014 (UTC)

IRC cloak request

Hello Philg88,

you or somebody pretending to be you filed a request for a wikimedia IRC cloak. However we have not received a valid diff. A valid diff has to be in one's own userspace and contain "IRC cloak request" as its summary. Please contact me on metawiki with a link to such a diff if you wish your request to be processed. Archives

Hello my friend, how is life as an exalted being treating you? Have you come to terms with your new tasks and tools, and most important: Is it fun? :) I'm moving along quite nicely with my usual articles. Still having a hard time sorting out who did what in the Grill family. Sources are not always too clear on the subject, so everything has to be tripple checked. It's pioneering work since no one has ever bothered to do this before, which feels a bit special. Anyway, fact of the day: The largest archive with all the 7,000 documents from Jean Abraham, was originally not digitized on behalf of the Swedes. Nope! It was done in 2003–2005 at a request from the Macao Historical Archives. The Swedish website is just a nice byproduct from this work. So, maybe some of the documents are more available to you at the Macao site. I've been looking around at their very large website but not found them. Maybe you have better luck. They might be hidden away behind some Chinese characters. :) Just thought I'd mention the whole thing. All the best, w.carter-Talk 20:53, 25 August 2014 (UTC)

Hey kompis "Exhausted" would be a better word than "exalted". So much more to do—never mind the copyedit on Lucknow, which has taken the best part of two days. Aside from that, all is good. In terms of content, my focus right now is on Dzungaria and related matters; a fascinating part of East Asian history of which little is known in the west. Apart from improvements to the existing content, there are perhaps a further 20 articles that need creating. As you can imagine, that will take some time (particularly given the sopkvast thing) so it will be a while before I get back to the trading stuff. BTW, if you're so inclined, drop me an email. It's about time we opened that channel of communication. Best as always,  Philg88 talk 21:20, 25 August 2014 (UTC)
Just take care you don't wear yourself out! It's easy to do when things are new and interesting. So, we're each stuck with huge projects. An loving it, at least I am. I might be done by the time you have your 20 articles. And I'll certainly try the email thing, never done it here on the Wiki though, but I'll figure it out. Oh, and JB is just getting some very competent ce. I thought I could just drop it in the GAN line to take that load of your back. The Plan did not include the sopkvast at the time of hatching. :) One has to be flexible. Now go get some sleep. Cheers, w.carter-Talk 21:46, 25 August 2014 (UTC)
If you could drop it in the GAN queue that would be good. If no one picks it up within a reasonable period, let me know and I'll do it. Cheers,  Philg88 talk 19:05, 26 August 2014 (UTC)

Your question at WP:RMTR prompted some reflection. The entries in the Old town list weren't very satisfying, because it's not obvious from going to the linked articles how the reader would find the old-town content. In fact the German article at de:Liste von Städten mit historischem Stadtkern is more convincing. There is an even better one (limited to Germany itself) at de:Liste von Städten mit historischem Stadtkern in Deutschland. This is an issue of article content I guess so that's a job for Some Other Editor to improve the English article. On the other hand, there are a few things like Old Town Historic District for the USA. EdJohnston (talk) 19:34, 26 August 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for the input Ed. I went ahead and moved the article as requested given that the sentence case version is a collective rather than a proper noun. I also gave it some more thought and left a message on the original requester's talk page suggesting that a move to List of old towns by country might be appropriate. That fits in with the German idea of de:Liste von Städten mit historischem Stadtkern in Deutschland but on a global scale—although German grammar is different and they would capitalise Städ/Städten regardless of its noun status (I think). Cheers,  Philg88 talk 20:04, 26 August 2014 (UTC)
It looks like you were right to perform the move. The Germans are safe from our capitalization disputes owing to their language! Sorry I was on vacation during your RfA; I missed my chance to support. EdJohnston (talk) 20:46, 26 August 2014 (UTC)
Yes, although German grammar is much stricter and would make our lives here easier sometimes, I like the flexibility English gives us. I hope you enjoyed your vacation. Best,  Philg88 talk 21:00, 26 August 2014 (UTC)

I have removed the tag you added to the article because I disagree that it should be there if there are multiple reliable sources there already. While you may feel the subject is not notable, I would at least think you would not tag if there are several reliable sources already. But I will not edit war if you choose to put it back.--Mark Miller (talk) 08:29, 27 August 2014 (UTC)

Hi Mark and thanks for the message. I didn't add the tag lightly - here is a run through of the references 1) is a blog called GirlGeek while 2,3,4 and 5 are passing mentions in filmographies or trivia books, i.e. insufficient to establish notability. I'm not going to edit war either, but I suggest you move it into the Draft space before somebody puts an AfD tag on it. Cheers,  Philg88 talk 08:40, 27 August 2014 (UTC)
Nah, I won't draft it. I was attempting to fix the issues that were there earlier when the subject had been attempting to edit and noticed due to their post on the Teahouse. It does look like the Geek Girl World source is a magazine blog, akin to a Forbes magazine blog. I should add attribution in the text for it, unless you think the reputation of the magazine would not allow its use for lack of fact checking, editorial oversite etc.. I think you convinced me to re-add the tag. :-)--Mark Miller (talk) 08:59, 27 August 2014 (UTC)
@Mark Miller: Me? try and convince you? Never! -:) . Cheers,  Philg88 talk 09:05, 27 August 2014 (UTC)

Radical Islam in Australia

Hi there,

I'd like to discuss the deletion of Radical Islam in Australia and request immediate un-deletion:

  • 1. The article in question received a number of "delete" votes prior to article expansion including a large number of edits affecting the articles coverage, tone and structure. Had the vote taken place after this significant changes were made, the result would have been in favour of "keep."
  • 2. Voters who requested deletion did not respond to arguments in favour of "keep."
    • 2.1. Arguments were made for keeping the page (e.g. why the article topic was valid, etc.). This arguments were not discussed prior to deletion.
    • 2.2. Arguments made for "delete" received comments and responses which pointed to logical flaws in citing particular WP policies as cause for deletion (e.g. WP:Fork). It was argued that these policies do not apply to the article under discussion. No response or further discussion was made.
  • 3. The final cause for deletion was not specified. This is especially concerning as WP policies cited as reasons for deletion may have been irrelevant to the discussion or not sufficiently demonstrated how they applied in this case.

Thank you, I.am.a.qwerty (talk) 15:01, 28 August 2014 (UTC)

Hi I.am.a.qwerty and thanks for the message. The reason for the deletion was that there was a strong consensus in favour of that outcome for the reasons stated in the deletion arguments, i.e. that the article was a WP:POVFORK of Islam in Australia. That is why I commented in the close that a section could be created in that article if there was consensus to do so.
If you believe that I misinterpreted the concensus to delete then you are of course free to take the matter to deletion review, but you should note that no article is exempt from Wikipedia policies. Cheers,  Philg88 talk 15:38, 28 August 2014 (UTC)
Where can I view the article as it was prior to deletion? Can you retrieve it? I.am.a.qwerty (talk) 16:14, 28 August 2014 (UTC)
@I.am.a.qwerty: Unfortunately not. Requests for undeletion is limited to AfD debates with little or no participation other than the nominator, which was not the case here. As I said above, the next stage is taking it to deletion review.  Philg88 talk 16:33, 28 August 2014 (UTC)
Can you please do a temp undelete so I can archive the last version of the article?I.am.a.qwerty (talk) 17:18, 28 August 2014 (UTC)
@I.am.a.qwerty: AFAIK, the only situation where {{TempUndelete}} can be used is as part of the DRV process that I've linked to twice above. Cheers,  Philg88 talk 18:21, 28 August 2014 (UTC)
Well done on your first DRV. If you're not dragged there every now and then you're not doing it right :) --Mkativerata (talk) 08:17, 29 August 2014 (UTC)
Thanks Mkativerata, your support is appreciated. By definition many decisions at AfD won't please everyone but the guiding principle, as well you know, is consensus. Individuals may not like a particular consensus but it demonstrates the policy based will of the community and is therefore in the best interests of the encyclopedia. In this case, I considered the reason for deletion fairly obvious but in future, for the avoidance of doubt, you will always find me providing a closing summary of the consensus based decision. Best,  Philg88 talk 08:26, 29 August 2014 (UTC)

Help

Hi sorry to bother yiu but you are tge first person ivsaw on this website. How to I use Wikipedia bc its veey confusing. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Fantasy Lover 16 (talkcontribs) 16:38, 29 August 2014 (UTC)

Hi there Fantasy Lover 16 and thanks for your message! First of all, Welcome to Wikipedia. It can look a bit confusing at first but I'm sure that you'll soon get the hang of it. I've left a table of useful links to things that might help on your talk page (which you can get to by clicking here). Again, welcome and if you have any questions please feel free to come back and ask them; you may also find the Teahouse a useful place to learn more.  Philg88 talk 17:25, 29 August 2014 (UTC)

Yes! Having trouble moving page

I am having trouble, so thank you for offering assistance! All I need to do is change the title from Saint Mark's School to Mark Day School. New articles of incorporation were filed in July 2014, so the move is uncontroversial.

I have tried numerous times to enter the necessary code snippet with the information filled in into the Technical Move request field but I keep getting errors.

I have only 9 edits so I am not yet an autoconfirmed user. Thank you for any advice or assistance you can offer. Skylions (talk) 18:37, 29 August 2014 (UTC)

@Skylions: Hi there! I've moved the page as requested - you may like to add a reference to the article confirming the change of name in case anyone gets confused. I think you already know this but once you are autoconfirmed, which will happen in 6 days or if you reach 500 edits before then :), you will be able to move pages yourself, except where there is a redirect in the way or for some other reason - in such cases you will need help from an admin. Good luck with what I hope will be a long career editing Wikipedia! Cheers,  Philg88 talk 18:59, 29 August 2014 (UTC)

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS QUICK FIX. I really, really appreciate your assistance. Skylions (talk) 20:43, 29 August 2014 (UTC)

@Skylions: You're welcome, please leave a message here if you need anything else.  Philg88 talk 20:56, 29 August 2014 (UTC)

Hi Phil unfortunately your guideline that you sent me didn't answer my question. I really appreciate your help :) <3 --Flora786 (talkcontribs) 18:30, 26 August 2014 (UTC)

Hello Flora and thanks for the message. I'm sorry that the guideline didn't help you. The message you recieved about a "peacock" term means is that you used a word in an article that is designed to promote something without really adding anything useful to the encyclopedia. Words like great, leading, celebrated, award-winning, famous, renowned, remarkable, prestigious and world-class are considered "peacock terms" and they shouldn't be used in Wikipedia articles. I hope that answers your question, but if not please feel free to come back. And if you have any more questions, come back and ask those too! Cheers,  Philg88 talk 19:03, 26 August 2014 (UTC)
p.s. don't forget to sign with four tildes (~~~~) when you leave a message on a talk page.

Thank you my friend, good to hear from you. So far I'm keeping the content flowing without interference from the mop. Your experience with Teahouse

Hello Philg88,

I am working on a project to support the development of current and future newcomer mentorship programs on Wikipedia.

Because you recently participated in the Teahouse, I would like to interview you about your experience in this program.

If you are interested, please email me at gmugar [at] syr.edu and hopefully we can find a convenient time to conduct an interview via Skype or Google hangout.

Thanks,

Your comment at UAA notwithstanding, I blocked the account because with a name like that, promotional intent is easily inferred regardless of the actual content of the edit. Also, it implies shared use for that purpose. Daniel Case (talk) 15:33, 6 September 2014 (UTC)

@Daniel Case: Thanks Daniel. I would have done the same but as a "newbie" I felt that a comment might be better rather than a block by me at this stage. Now I know that it should have been blocked and I appreciate you taking the time to explain. Best,  Philg88 talk 16:08, 6 September 2014 (UTC)

Talk: Amanda Eliasch

Hi, Could you take another look at the {{oldafd}} you added to Talk:Amanda Eliasch with this edit . For some reason "disscussion" is linking to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Amanda Eliasch and not to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Amanda Eliasch (2nd nomination). I'm still fairly new to Wikipedia, so I'm not sure how to fix that or if I'm even supposed to try and fix that. Thanks in advance. - Marchjuly (talk) 09:41, 6 September 2014 (UTC)

Hi Marchjuly and thanks for the message. I've fixed up the link so it should all make sense now. Cheers,  Philg88 talk 09:50, 6 September 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for taking the time to look at it again. Maybe I could've fixed it myself, but I wasn't sure and didn't want to do anything improper. For some reason, that particular page seems to be generating lots of heat, at least more than I it should, and didn't want to do anything that would accidentally add a little fuel to that fire. - Marchjuly (talk) 21:28, 6 September 2014 (UTC)
Yes, Marchjuly, the article does seem be the focus for a lot of emotive editing. I'll try to keep an eye on it but if anything happens that you think I should know about, please feel free to let me know. Cheers,  Philg88 talk 04:57, 7 September 2014 (UTC)

Link. You are an uninvolved editor but I guess you would have some understanding of the subject. I would appreciate if you could look into the edit war going here and provide your feedback if any. Disclosure: The request has been posted on noticeboard by an involved editor (Vanamonde93). I am also an involved editor. I have pinged Ekabhishek, and Philg88 on their talk page with this same message for participation request. Regards. --AmritasyaPutra 07:12, 7 September 2014 (UTC)

Hi AmritasyaPutra and thanks for the heads up. It looks like a discussion is now in progress between the two editors involved so I'm not going to get involved at this stage. Cheers,  Philg88 talk 07:39, 7 September 2014 (UTC)
Okay, thanks. :-) --AmritasyaPutra 07:43, 7 September 2014 (UTC)
