Dear Phaedriel, thanks for your nice message, it gave me good reason to emit a long wiki-smile - something that's all too rare around here these days. No need to blush about the compliments, Frank Rinehart is a great article with fantastic images, but the main one selected has a haunting beauty for me that evokes what must have been the sadness about the fate that befell her nation. Keep all the good stuff coming. And just FYI, Cactus.men NEVER shave ... :-) --Cactus.man 11:53, 22 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I also meant to say that your soundtrack project is a fantastic idea. I'll add things in the next few days hopefully, but where the Hell do I start? There's just TOO MUCH STUFF. --Cactus.man 12:02, 22 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I'm going to ask a wiki buddy to look at this for the more technical side of portals for you too. I think this is a good portal, love the earth tones and wide picture at top, but for FP status, here are my opinions:

  • the intro is too long, cut it and cut down the size of the intro picture
  • instead of a read more button, make the link with the bolded title in the text of sel. bio., sel. article, etc. In these same sections, make a "candidates" button where people can nominate articles for selection (my Scouting one has this feature, as do many others).
  • the space between DYK and cats is sorta big. See if you can rearrange something, like maybe make cats one column or move ToDo into that empty area
  • I'd move the map right above wikimedia, as it's so big it makes ToDo (in it's current spot) look like an afterthought
  • You may want to set up rolling content (see Scouting and War portals, click the edit button). This isn't actually a requirement as far as I know, but it often gets mentioned in FP noms. You pick an interval (I use monthly), make your supporting files, and the (in my case) 1st of every month the things like selected articles get changed automatically. This lets you pick you next interval's articles ahead of time instead of you being tied to a clock.

If you haven't already, check out the ones at Wikipedia:Featured_portals, such as my Scouting, War, and Food ones. Let me know anytime you list something for featured status or need help. Rlevse 12:35, 22 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Rlevse asked me to take a look at this, so here are some (mostly technical) things that would come up during a FP nom:
  • The "DYK" section doesn't have an archive.
  • The "Selected picture" section doesn't have a visible photo credit.
  • There's no "Major topics" section. (This might take some time to put together, but it can be quite easy if you have a navigation template of some sort to steal links from.)
  • The archive links are scattered between the left and right side of the boxes. I'm not sure which is neater aesthetically, particularly as you also have "Read more" links; but they should at least be consistent.
Auto-rotating content would be nice, as Rlevse mentioned; but it's not required so long as you're willing to keep the portal maintained by hand. Kirill Lokshin 15:28, 22 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Your message on my talk

[edit]

My dear Sharon, I'm humbled and a bit shocked that you've been considering this idea! Running for bureaucratship isn't something I've given serious thought to, as I've been perfectly content the past year helping out with my admin buttons. While I give my deepest thanks for your kind, generous words, I'll stay with my decision against running for those extra tools. There are many dedicated, hardworking admins out there that would do a much better job as bureaucrat than I could, and the community doesn't seem to be in dire need for more, as people have pointed out in various RfB's. But again, thanks so much for your confidence and trust– which, to put it simply, mean a lot to me. :) By the way, I'll try to drop by your Soundtrack of Wikipedians page as soon as I figure out just where to start. ;) Kind regards, Sango123 15:09, 22 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Glad to hear you're doing better, and flattered by your message to me; I'm glad my advice was "useful"; I was worried I'd been a bit vain/presumptuous by sending you my own music, but what the heck, ya liked it and sounds like the prescription worked, too. This is just a quick note here, as you're deluged by repies right now I know; you can find my email through cayoosh.net/music or cayoosh.net/ (I don't post it on my Wiki page as I'm a bit of a firebrand in some arenas/topics). Gonna find you some hoedown music later on, since you liked the "medical" stuff. Music's my medicine, brought me back from the darkness; it's a gift I have an obligation to give, and it's always wonderful when other people like it, or find it helps them. Nobody can tell me magic isn't real. ("Ugak" isn't Chinook Jargon, by the way; it's a personal all-purpose expletive/interjection, ranging in meaning but, well, highly useful...the "ancient language of the trollkind", perhaps....;-0)Skookum1 19:07, 22 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Didn't know such a small image as Image:Star*.svg existed, but I'm going to use it, saying that you are clearly one of few Wikipedians.

I'm also laughing about The Halo's dyslexia comment. But it's a good reason to give hugs (even though nobody needs a good reason to give hugs)! *Hugs tight, but not explosively tight* ;) The one and only Cliff 22:19, 22 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Phaedriel, remember back when I first left a message on your page and said that you were one of my favourite editors? Well, as well as your never ending kindness and good cheer, all your hard work on Portal:Indigenous peoples of North America just shows how much you mean to this project. You realise that with all your work, you've made wikipedia about 5% better (which is a whole lot in terms of wikipedia. ;) There is so much to learn there, it really is one of the best portals I have ever seen (I love the orange background as well) and you, and everyone else that works there, have made it possible for people like me, and potentially millions of others, to find out so much. I know that you're a very humble and modest person, and that reading this is probably making you slightly embarrassed, but you really have done some awesome work.

Other than that, I hope that you’re well, and you're enjoying what's left of your vacation (if you're still on it). I'll talk with you soon, okay? Yours, with hugs, Thε Halo Θ 15:48, 25 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

to Phaedriel

[edit]

Hi, Phaedriel, thanks for your considerate comments on my page and for what you said about my always being welcome. I appreciate that. It is true that my original oppose vote to (I forget the name Mithra?, was based on my impression of cliqeniness, etc. It was the way he and several others reacted that actually confirmed and cemented my oppose vote. The way they went over the edge and flipped out over one oppose when there were so many supports is just bizarre to me. (It ended by being something like 132 support votes, so why get so uptight about 1 oppose?)

I never said, btw, that you personally, or any individual, for that matter, was a member of a clique and doing clique voting. The reasons, though, for support, from most of the supporters are usually quite vague. This, in itself is strange to me.

Anyway I'm sorry if you don't like the way I vote. I have my own way of thinking and seeing a lot of things. This probably confuses plenty of people. I tend to think outside the box and am not easily influenced by the opinions of others. I do like to remain openminded, however, and have had my mind changed on certain issues, when a strong case is presented through reason. I do not get influenced through the use of pressure or force. I don't see you as doing this. I do see the reaction to that oppose vote to Mithra? as pressure and intimidation because that was what it was.

Well, again, thanks for your welcome to talk on your page. Any time you want to comment on my page you are welcome also. in freedom and justice. Shannonduck talk 14:27, 26 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Userpage

[edit]

Everything is fine. I deleted it and manually pasted the last revision at /Userpage, where my sig now points, but not my userpage or my talkpage. The reason is, if you google for my full name in qutoes, which you must have if I ever sent you an email, an old long-deleted revision from 2005 pops up in which I identify myself - Google continues to archive this stuff even once it's gone off WP, as long as something remains on the page. The only solution is deleting it entirely, replacing with a redir. My problem is law firm interviews coming up - not threatening vandals. You can't get to it in google unless you know my full name ahead of time which vandals do not. But law firms, which Google applicants all the time apparently, do not need to see my WP activity and opinions. Once Google crawls though again and clears its cache, I will probably restore the userpage to its proper location. Meanwhile, feel free to correct the link in your trophy case! And thanks for caring. :) - CrazyRussian talk/email 19:27, 27 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Question

[edit]

I have long admired your touch with redesigning userpages. I'm pretty happy with mine at the moment (although I'd welcome suggestions, and would enjoy seeing what you'd do with it if you're inclined to play), but it occurred to me today that a page that could really use a gentle, respectful touch of design work is Wikipedia:Deceased Wikipedians. Would you please think about it? I haven't suggested it on the talk page there yet, as I thought I'd see if you were interested first.

Hi Sharon. I have a question for your in your role as Master (Mistress?) of Userpage design. How do I add a flat (not grooved) border around a page? Thanks Guettardathehtmlchallenged 15:48, 28 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

My userpage, actually. It could use a makeover anyway, but for the next 5 days I want a black border to mourn the death and destruction of the 1990 Jamaat al Muslimeen coup attempt. Thanks very much. Guettarda 16:00, 28 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Perfect. Thank you. Have a great birthday tomorrow, and enjoy your RFA. Guettarda 16:36, 28 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

nothing personal

[edit]

I voted neutral on your RfA. I feel guilty doing this due to the huge support as well as the fairly trivial nature of my observation. Nevertheless, I think it is important to give feedback that is honest too. May be i am destined to be labelled as a nitpicker but I hope my comments can be viewed as constructive. Good luck as an admin, this one is a slam dunk (possibly WP:200) :) And have a Happy Birthday tomorrow! David D. (Talk) 17:45, 28 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Congratulations!!!

Your RfA will surely hit WP:200. Maybe even WP:300. By the way, I added myself to your Soundtrack of Wikipedians page. Happy birthday, too. ~ crazytales56297 -talk- 18:44, 28 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry :(

Don't worry about that oppose vote — that user often opposes RfAs, so it's not your fault per se. — Deckiller 20:45, 28 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sockpuppet allegations have risen — any odds that it's accurate? — Deckiller 22:15, 28 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the message :) Below that oppose vote, someone noticed an edit parallel between that opposer and a previous blocked user. — Deckiller 22:45, 28 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
