Biography of Peter Maphatsoe

Peter Morena'mele (MM) Maphatsoe is the first son of Mabothe and 'Maseeng Maphatsoe Born 1984 May 26 in Leribe, Kolonyama, Ha Rakolo, where the first Prime Minister of Lesotho Dr Leabua Jonathan was a chief, Peter Maphatsoe has lived all his 25 years in the small mountain kingdom of Lesotho, (a landlocked mountainous country that forms an enclave in South Africa; pop. 1,816,000; capital, Maseru; official languages, Sesotho and English). 2 years later he went to Pretoria (administrative capital of South Africa; pop. 1,080,000. It was founded in 1855 by Marthinus Wessel Pretorius (1819–1901), the first president of the South African Republic, and named after his father Andries) as part of his learning and touring across the universe.

At the age of 14 he became the first Mosotho to make carvings from the aloe wood that grows profusely in his country, selling them on the street to survive. From the start, he says, his art was motivated by both love and hunger. Lesotho has no museums, galleries, art schools, or studios, but its breathtaking beauty and rich history, language and traditions inspired Peter to teach himself to draw and paint. He was also encouraged by the dedication, generosity and talent of older Basotho artists, especially Tsepiso Lesenyeho.

2002 he won African intellectual property Award and appeared in the ranking of Lesotho review of commerce and industry. He also won several awards in the category of best designers, art, research and collections.

In 2007 Peter founded the Children’s Art Organisation of Lesotho to provide instructions, materials and encouragement to Basotho children.

He soon connected his organisation with the newly-founded Family Literacy Lesotho (under the auspice of Prof Jane A Hale and Hon Gerard Mathot), whose mission is to encourage the creation of the first children’s picture books about Lesotho in the Sesotho language and put them in the homes of Basotho children. He is the writer and illustrator the following publications:

                                          Traditional welcoming of Mosotho Child

                                              Kgalapa
                                             Tribe of Ndebele’s (under development)
                                             African Spirituality (under development)
Community of the power mind (under development)

In 2008 Peter found a Family Art and Literacy Centre in Khubetsoana, a populous neighbourhood on the outskirts of the capital Maseru. At the Centre local artists have access to supplies, workspace, and a display and sales area. Neighbourhood children and their families are welcomed every day for free art lessons, story hours, and access to the Centre's growing library of children's books. Over 70 children visit the Centre regularly to learn about their beautiful culture.

He illustrated and invented some signs of first ever Lesotho sign language dictionary in collaboration with African studies and languages in the National University of Lesotho.

2011 He initiated Intersection Africa Trust in South Africa (IA) to engage community members in reading corners, he believe that the most important element of high quality education is literacy. Without the ability to read intensively, people are denied access to pertinent information about health, social, cultural and political issues as well as sources of pleasure and enrichment. Illiteracy in Africa are deeply rooted social phenomena and are threatening the transformation and development of our Nation. High level of illiteracy are far-reaching and yet largely ignored. Illiteracy constitutes a profound injustice and threatens the economic order and the fabric of our democracy. The reality of illiteracy in Africa is more alarming in the light of the higher literacy level required in the workplace and the challenges presented by our social context. Illiteracy also reinforce poverty and millions of illiterates continue to experience all kinds of human miseries including hunger, disease, high infant mortality rates, unemployment and inadequate shelter. Although there are no causal relationships between illiteracy, poverty and unemployment, the maps of illiteracy, poverty and employment are beginning to mirror each other.

The abovementioned literacy program will be transformed in a Book and Film.
