Beacon Hill, New South Wales, Warringah Road

The main reason for adding street pages to my suburb article is to create community. I am publicly proposing that members of our local community participate in this Wiki project so they can add thier collective knowledge of the history of thier street.
From my experience, every street has it's history, as does every family and I think this project provides the mechanism for them to document that. This ranges from previous property owners to various events. I feel this can be helpful especially in researching family history.
On the other hand, I think your point of view might be that it's important to conserve articles so that they can be managed properly. I agree, conserving space and promoting managability is important, however, the alternative might be to have a whole lot of sub-headings within the main article and make the article very long. This has an effect on the usability of an online document in my opinion.

- Hi. I think a good strategy might be this: begin with a "main article" that you can already add content to. Let it have sections for various neighborhoods, streets, etc. As those sections get bigger and the article becomes less mangagable, it's pretty easy for large sections to split off into separate articles. It's a nice kind of organic process, that happens all the time in Wikipedia. That might be preferable to creating a lot of empty articles that have to wait around for someone to add content.
- Whether or not you decide to do that, I want to let you know about stub categories. There's a project going on to organize stubs according to their topic, so people can find them more easily. Rather than putting the {{stub}} template on articles, you can use more specific ones, like {{NewSouthWales-geo-stub}}. You can find an organized list of all the various stub types here.

- Hi Peter. Welcome. I admire your efforts towards building community. I'm not sure how likely the editors here at wikipedia will be at leaving your pages alone. The issue will be playing itself out on the Articles for deletion page for the time being. (By the way, don't take down any of the ugly looking tags that get put up or you might wind up causing more harm than good for your proposal). I thought that maybe blogger would be a good thing for you to consider. There, you could get all the families in your neighborhood set up with their own blog to post photos and stories and all the goings on that are important on a small scale but perhaps not of substantial importance to be in an encyclopedia. I dont think blogs are the way to go on this because of thier "bad name" whereas Wikipedia has a great name and citing it as a resource in research is a much better thing than citing a blog. I voted delete for the street names in Beacon Hill as there were of local interest only. However, I think that there is great scope for you to work on developing the Beacon Hill, New South Wales article. An example of a good article on a suburb is the article on Yarralumla, Australian Capital Territory. However, don't get discouraged and keep up the good work. Notability of city features
[edit]Re your question on AfD about what level of detail is appropriate for city features -- in my experience (that is, not necessarily by policy, but by what I've seen survive AfD), articles about neighbourhoods are about as tight as it gets unless the street is particulary notable on historical or tourism grounds (Times Square, Rodeo Drive, Sussex Drive). As an example, Preston Street (Ottawa) was heading for deletion but as Little Italy, Ottawa it was easily kept.

- As several of us mentioned, there is no issue with adding street-level details to an existing article for a city/neighborhood, but rarely will a street be notable enough to garner its own article. There is a section at Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Precedents (See Remarks on Notability) that addresses this. Mendel's suggestion regarding naming of a district might be a good idea, if all of these streets are in the same area of town -- something like Historic Beacon Hill, New South Wales still might have to suffer through an afd, but it would stand a much better chance of surviving. - Neier 14:09, 16 October 2005 (UTC)
Street names
[edit]Actually, I think that it would be very cool to have street names for a suburb. Every council should have a town planner that gives the history of the names... my only suggestion would be to create an article List of streets in Strathfield (for instance), something like this:
- Redmyre Street: the name originally came from the original Redmyre Estate that existed before Strathfield was proclaimed (see the birth of Strathfield). The street was named by such and such on such and such date.

Getting Wikimedians to the Olympic Games
[edit]Hi. I am part of an effort to get Wikimedians access to the 2016 Summer Olympics as accredited reporters and photographers. Part of this effort includes covering the 2012 Summer Paralympics. Two Wikimedians have credentials to attend these games as reporters through Wikimedia Australia. As English Wikipedia does not allow original reporting, this is largely through Wikinews with a project page found at Wikinews:Paralympic Games. If you are interested in helping to get Wikimedians to the next Summer Olympics,I'd encourage you to assist with Wikinews efforts, and also to work on all language 2012 Summer Paralympic Wikipedia articles before, during and after the Games to demonstrate a track record of success.
