Hello Stephen,

I think your fair use rational is well reasoned (I became aware of you because of Fair use images in lists). What I really want to talk about, though, is your user page. I think it looks really cool and I'm copying it for my own user page, I hope you don't mind. The problem is that I don't have or don't understand the pages for the commons, workspace, or email me links. Could you explain them to me? I know how to code in a few programming languages so don't hold back in any explanation. Your workspace page looks really cool but I have no idea what its purpose is. Same with the commons page. I can probably figure out the email stuff on my own if I have to so don't sweat that part too hard.

The "Commons" link is to my user account on the Wikimedia Commons, which is not going to be any use to you unless you have an account there too. The "Workspace" page is just a place where I can list drafts of articles or templates I'm working on, and similar stuff. Email is a duplicate of the "E-mail this user" link that appears in the toolbox on the left of the page of every user who has entered and confirmed their email address.

It's fairly common to borrow other people's designs, and it's also generally customary to mention who you borrowed a design from, although it's not necessary. As for the picture, you can pick any (free-licence) image you like for the centre. --bainer (talk) 09:41, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

I've been customising the code I got from you. Check it out here. I put a cool linked current time in the top left if you want to copy it (although it wants to stay cached damn it). I also cited you as my source for the wiki code I "borrowed."

I've created a monobook.css page (as you know) with the code from your page but I don't understand it. It seems to be setting tabs. I don't know css yet but I want to tackle that part of wikipedia. Could you explain it?

Anyways, it's a little strange because we're on the opposite sides of the LOE debate but I like your user page so I was hoping you could hook me up with some good wiki tips.

All that's active in my CSS at the moment is the line at the top turning off the Sitenotice. The rest is commented out, it's some styling for the tabs at the top and side (to give them rounded corners in Firefox) and some styling for duplicate tabs at the bottom, which goes with some code I no longer use in my monobook.js. You can probably delete it all if you want, it's only useful if you want rounded corners. See the French WP for an example of this in action.

The other thing is that you need to check the "raw signature" box in your preferences if you're going to use HTML in your signature. Also keep in mind that styles in your monobook.css display for you only, and noone else. You can hardcode the styles in the signature instead, although some people disapprove of overly complicated signatures. --bainer (talk) 10:09, 29 July 2006 (UTC)

Re: Fred Koehler and that Neato Code

I have an obsessive personality (but fortunately not an addictive one) and particularly latch onto short, awkward men for months at a time. The previous (celebrity, psuedo or otherwise) was Charlie Day. Plus, he just happened to my be first Wiki, really, so his page was my early experimentation ground, where I tested out the basics. A combination of personality defect and curiosity, mostly. And it gives me joy that he's got a documented and thorough filmography where other celebrities just have gossip columns.

Back in the day I used to design web pages (just for my friends and schools) and write blog templates, but I fell out of it and now it's too hard to get back in; I don't have the time to pore through page sources and how-to pages to learn "Web 2.0." Wiki picks up really easy, though I need to learn the command to make the pipe symbol so I don't have to copy and paste or try and find it in the tiny insert box below. I'm a theatre/film student, not a computer whiz, so I've given up on anything other than basic mastery.

Yeah, whatever you want to do is fine. Are you talking about the link wheel? (I've been awake for 25 hours, and just got off 10 hours of the night shift.) I was actually looking at that yesterday, but had to pack up my laptop and haven't had a chance yet to test out it's functionality. That would be wonderful, if you're offering.

Thank you for the link wheel! I'm not sure about that Fred Koehler link on there though. I mean, I had a link to it already on my page, but what if the real Fred ever finds it and is embarrassed by it? He might just be sitting there in the coffee shop, having a triple soy tiramisu mocha, when he decides it'd be a kick to look up his own name. Hell, I've done so on many occasions. He stumbles across the page, checks the history, then spills his delicious beverage all over himself because some random dude apparently has a boy crush on him. I try to be a considerate guy...what if the mocha burns him? The correct temperatures for steamed soy milk are between 140-150 degrees, but if he likes it a little cajun or the barista just dialed back the pump too late, he could get hurt. I worry about things like this sometimes.

By the way, I have absolutely no idea how Fred Koehler likes his coffee or if he even likes coffee. Triple soy tiramisu mocha became my favorite during my period of time working in coffee shops. That was just me being random, not stalking him. I don't know where he lives; I suspect he lives in Southern California, probably in LA or within a reasonable commute (Sherman Oaks, Whittier, et cetera) but I'm not going to invest effort into finding out. Smallville

Excuse, but when there is an ongoing discussion about one page, do not take it upon yourself to "redirect" another page to yours. I left it on the Talk page, but I'll put it here, cause it was kind of cluttered on there anyway. You want the List page, I want the Season page, everyone else wants both. Policy indicates that Individual Episode pages, for the most part, cannot support an entire page, and as of right now the only episode that probably can is the Pilot episode. My proposal is this. We make your "LIST" page like the FA of other list pages, where it's strictly the basics: Title, Number, Writer, Director, Air Date (notice " The Simpsons". You don't need the DVD list because that is already on the Smallville (TV series) page. We take the season pages and spruce them up to a respectible level. That means we clean up all the summaries so that they are NPOV, the tone is correct, they are short (but not too short) and to the point. That way, with slimmer summaries we can make room for "Featured Songs", (relevant and important) Trivia (because Wiki does have a true policy on Trivia), and any other relevant goodies we can find. This way we don't have tons of Episode pages proposed for deletion because they are stacked with fancruft. Then, when we actually find enough encyclopedic (referenced) information for an episode we create a separate page for that episode so that it doesn't bog down the season pages. I know you want to keep the indy ep pages, but the fact remains that just creating them and loading them with trivia will send them immediately to the chopping block/merging block (admins will find them and kill them, trust me I know). This way, instead of creating needless episode pages that will end up being fought over countless times, we can focus on improving the "List", "Season", and "Main" pages so that they are respectible and on their way to FA. What's the difference between the List page's DVD information and the Main pages? As for the list page, It's summaries are a bit long. They should only be 1 sentence or 2, or maybe even known. As The Simpson's illustrate, it can be featured as a pure List of Navigational maps. I like Ned's idea that we link all the episodes to their respective spots on the season pages, unless enough reference material can be found for a specific episode. Season pages are far better than individual episode pages, because they can easily support themselves. I now see the reason behind a List page, but individual ep pages I don't. Anything you read about indy ep pages will tell you that they are destined to be proposed for deletion for being merely expanded plots and fancruft. Look at Stargate's episode pages, they are nothing but huge plots. It's much easier, and faster to work on the season pages and the List page, then it is trying to find resources to support 130+ (and counting) episode pages that will be proposed for deletion otherwise. You're right about Wikia, they are lacking some episodes, but that's because we have too many people fighting over what pages should stay/go and not working to make everything better. Everyone (minus you) is pretty much in agreement that no episode pages should be created yet, and that we should focus on bettering the quality of both the List and the Season pages. It sounds to me like you are making excusing and are unwilling to compromise. I've been working on the season pages for awhile, it isn't hard to navigate it "edit page" mode, not as difficult in doing it for a page that list every episode of the series, in a formatted box no less. I've already taken care of Season 1, all the writers and directors have been noted, and applied the fields to all the rest of the season (they just need to be filled in). As for Guests, only certain episodes have "noteable guests", and we can take a cue from Arrested Development and list all guests on the Main page (recurring and special), that takes care of that. As for the episodes on episodes, that is the way it is now, and there is not format problem. Especially when you consider that adding a little more relevant information for each episode will expand the section a bit, you will actually create less image overlap because of that, making each episode section more presentable. I think you are being purposefully difficult because you really want individual episode pages, and everyone is in at least some agreement that as this moment individual episode pages are a bad idea. Admit it, this is a good idea. It isn't difficult to link to a correct section of an article per link (if you don't know how then I'll be glad to show you/take care of it myself), and most of the work on the episodes in the season pages has already been done, they just need sprucing. Right now all the episode pages are basically bare with information. I just took a look at Metamorphosis. Quotes have their own place, the single bullet of trivia needs a cite (otherwise it should be deleted) which leaves it with nothing more than featured music and a plot. That is hardly enough for a page, but plenty for a spot on the season page (which it already has). Nothing gets done, after 5 days is up it will automatically be closed. If most people were commiting suicide, would you join in? Just because many editors are doing something dumb and wrong, doesn't make them right. Pages get away with incorrect formats all the time. Look at fictional character pages like Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees, and Michael Myers (Halloween); then compare them to Jabba the Hutt. Seriously, take a quick glance at those three and compare to the last. There is a huge difference, the major one being the first three are completely incorrect article formats, but yet they still exist, in the hopes that one day someone will come along and force them to be corrected. I am personally working on the Jason Voorhees article in my personal sandbox to get it up to par. Look at the episode pages of other shows, you find a lot of information that goes against policy (yes policy and not guidelines). There is policy against extended plots, and majory policies against articles that can't support themselves. We don't need another discussion, you got it on the proposed deletion page. Go back and look at all the "Keeps", you'll find that most also stated to "not create any indy ep pages" until resources can be provided to support a separate page. You will not find enough resources to support 130+ (and growing) separate articles for Smallville, and just because others are getting away with it at the moment doesn't mean that Smallville will. I know you put effort into making the first season pages, but the majority do not deserve a page for themselves, and you know that. Now, we can turn 3 articles into awesome articles, or we can create 130 articles that will each be up for debate and you know that real admins will notice them and propose a merger into something else. That is why there are season pages that contain enough info to support indy eps, and when they get too big we create a page for that particular ep (if they get that big). That doesn't mean that have a ton of trivia is getting too big, because that just means the trivia needs to be limited to relevance/importance. Smallville ep pages

Hi, I noticed you're in a disagreement over the state of episode pages on Wiki. Might I suggest you come help out at the Smallville wikia, if you don't already? There are pages for each episode, and they can be as long and detailed as they want. There is also less lax rules about uploading pictures, referencing, and that sort of thing, so it's easier to edit. More importantly, the Smallville wikia could be a great tool for fans, but it needs a LOT of work. Many pages are full of grammatical errors, and there are a lot of stubs. I've been working on several pages all summer (I'm kind of addicted), and I think you would be a great helping hand. Marikology 19:42, 29 August 2006 (UTC)

I know, I'm addicted! I do it on my lunch break when I'm bored cos our internet is heavily firewalled and they haven't blocked wikia yet. I've gotten to where I can do an entire ep with recap and pictures in an hour. LOL Sad, huh? As far as individual pages here, I think you'd be fighting a losing battle because Wikipedia is so hardcore about references and citations and uploading pics all that other stuff, and I kind of agree that it's probably not the best place for something so fan-nish and detailed. I'd LOVE for there to be individual pages for "The X-Files", but I'm just not sure it's allowed. "Smallville" is weird because it's not just a tv show, it's a teeny part of the larger Superman and DC comics universe, so it makes sense for it to have a seperate wikia. Stop trying to weasel your way around what was decided. Linking the episode title to an article that contains the exact same information is not helpful. Your deliberate attempts to get your way, and ignorance of other editors opinions, Wikipedia policy and guidelines is going to force me to seek Administrative actions on you. You obviously have enough passion to do good work if you just put that effort into finding the information that Wikipedia feels an article should contain when dealing with a fictional universe. You are currently just adding nonencyclopedic information that has nothing to do with the show itself and all to do with what happens in the episodes. Right now all the information on these episodes is fanbased and as soon as real out-of-universe information is found it will replace what is there. If you wish to continue to promote this type of information then please do so in Wikia. The episodes are already linked to their respective pages there, and could use far more attention then the needless creation of articles that "don't fit the bill" of Wikipedia guidelines and policies. About the citation for the episode list headers, if it's something that's true for all the episodes you might just want to make it a generic note at the bottom of the page. For example, WP:LOE#Featured lists, many of those articles contain references at the bottom for websites where air dates, prod codes, etc, are taken from. I have no reason to change my opinion. The majority of the people agreed that indy ep pages can rarely support themselves, and need a lot of out-of-universe information to do so. Everything you've put in the episode pages is "in-universe" information, which is equivalent to fancruft. Wikipedia is not a fandome, it's an encyclopedia. If you can't find out-of-universe information about the show then there's nothing to put on the page. The shear fact that many people want an indy ep page doesn't justify it. Almost (and I say almost, because I have seen some really good indy ep pages) every indy ep page in Wikipedia qualifies for deletion in regards to an article about a fictional universe, and an article about a television series. That is why that stuff is better left in a Seasonal page, because there usually isn't enough out-of-universe information to support a page. More than half of the Seasonal pages should go (and will go once we get out-of-universe information to put in the episode sections). I don't mean to be hard about this, but it's the principle behind what Wikipedia is and what it is not, and it's not a substitute for watching episodes, and it isn't a fandome. Lesson Not Learned

I don't know about it. I like the changed format for the quotes pages...I considered doing that when I first started writing SWC pages, but gave up on it because the SWC Character page is a mess. It seemed like too much to type (I want to change some of the naming on that page, but don't want to go through and change the links. For instance, Geraldine "Jerri" Antonia Blank should just be Jerri Blank, where her info can reveal her full name). However, the "lesson not learned" is a) something of a spoiler warning that should be noted and b) is somewhat subjective and can be targeted for errors in phrasing and logic (potentially). Perhaps "Jerri's Closing Comments" would be better, a spin-off of the Quotes section, because it usually describes the "lesson not learned" quite well and avoids the issues noted above because it's still a straight quote and can be proven.
