Stan Jones (Welsh Artist) (1930-2012)

Welsh artist Stan Jones was a well-known [Watercolour Painting] artist who was known for his work based on [Dylan Thomas] poetry Stan Jones (Stanley Owen Jones) grew up on a farm, called Werndew, in [Pembrokeshire]. As a youth he went to school in what's now known as 'yr Hen Ysgol' in [Dinas Cross] and then Fishguard Grammar, where he was head boy. He began painting with inspiration from Dylan Thomas' poetry and was inspired to paint over 100 watercolors using lines from the poetry such as ‘Happy as the grass was green’ and ‘Here were fond climates’. Stan Jones was also inspired by the Sun and it is featured in many of his works of Art After teacher training college, Stan Jones studied art at [Trinity University College] in Carmarthen (1950-1952) and at [Cardiff School of Art & Design]. He was the former Head of Art at [St Cyres School] in Penarth and taught at the school for nearly 30 years. For many years, Stan was Chairman of the [Watercolour Society of Wales] and had many exhibitions with that group, one which also included a painting by Prince Charles. He was also on the Executive Committee of the Contemporary Arts Society of Wales and designed their logo. He exhibited with them too and was responsible for choosing art students that would receive a grant from them. Stan Jones also wrote a book called [Tra'd yn y Tir] (see below) about growing up on a farm, called Werndew, in Dinas Cross, Pembrokeshire and illustrated it throughout with pen and ink drawings .

Some exhibitions: Stan Jones: A Retrospective, at Oriel Washington Gallery in Penarth; it ran from 4 July 25 July, 2011. A number of his paintings are now kept in the [National Library of Wales], Aberystwyth Other galleries exhibited in include [Turner House Gallery], Penarth, Library in Fishguard, Albany #gallery, Cardiff (1969)
