The Kindness Campaign
This user is a member of the Kindness Campaign
Some Wikipedians have formed a project to better the quality of life at the Wikipedia through Kindness and Recognition of Users. It is hoped that this project will help to focus the efforts of other Wikipedians. All too often we get too wrapped up in our own tasks to recognize the hard work and determination of others. This WikiProject aims to correct that injustice, even if only a little bit, by making a conscious effort to acknowledge exceptional effort, skill, and commitment. It is motivated by the belief that a little kindness goes a long way, and in the end results in a better Wikipedia experience for everybody. |
Remembering Brian Boulton
[Message text copied here from User talk:Brianboulton#Remembering Brian:]
Dear colleagues,
I wanted to create something by which those of us who have had the pleasure of working with him could commemorate our friend Brian Boulton, who died peacefully on 9 December 2019. Although userboxes are often used for frivolous purposes, it occurred to me that it would be meaningful simply to display the following userbox on our user pages:
This Wikipedian remembers Brian Boulton. |
To add this userbox to your page, just apply: {{User:Pdebee/UBX/Remembers}}
With kind regards;

Dear colleagues,
I created a generic userbox to commemorate our absent Wikifriends, and I keep a copy for Sarah at my user page:

To add this userbox to your user page, just copy/paste:

Help with 'rowspan=', please
This help request has been answered. If you need more help, you can , contact the responding user(s) directly on their user talk page, or consider visiting the Teahouse. |
Dear helpful fellow editors,
I am in the process of building the table below (section Table 1), in which the third row has 4 internal sub-rows (under a heading of Cite) and am experiencing a glitch: having coded 'rowspan=5' (since 5 table row marks |- are needed to define that third row), the table formats properly, but when I sort on any column, a 5th sub-row appears, void of any content. Another table I created some time ago (section Table 2) also uses the 'rowspan=' parameter, but works perfectly, without displaying an extra row when sorted.
I have been checking and re-checking the wikicode for Table 1 and consulting Help:Table etc., but am now at a loss to understand what’s causing this glitch. It's probably something really simple, but I just can't see it. I would therefore appreciate any helpful pointers, and/or an explanation of what I am doing wrong.
Very many thanks in advance for your helpful assistance.
With kind regards;
Patrick. ツ Pdebee.(talk)(become old-fashioned!) 18:08, 18 March 2022 (UTC)
- Hi @Pdebee; I'm fairly certain its because you have
rowspan=5
, but as far as I can see that specific row only has 4 (49 F.R.D. 184 (E.D. La. 1967, 1968), 310 F. Supp. 536 (E.D. La. 1970), 319 F. Supp. 314 (E.D. La. 1970), and 321 F. Supp. 1241 (E.D. La. 1971)). Setting it to 4 seems to fix the issue, at least for me (see User:Asartea/sandbox). -- Asartea Talk | Contribs 18:27, 18 March 2022 (UTC)
- Dear Asartea,
- Thank you for your prompt reply! As I hope you will be able to see, I have now changed the parameter to
rowspan=4
, and the table is not formatted correctly. By the way, I had already tried with that value before requesting help, and obtained the same result. I am intrigued by your comment, though: “Setting it to 4 seems to fix the issue, at least for me”, even though the parameter was still set to ‘5’ when I read your reply just now; did you actually copy the table into your Wiki environment, and got it to display correctly after changing it torowspan=4
? Or did you apply the fix here, got it to work, and then changed it back to ‘5’? Thank you for letting me know if I understood correctly that you tested the fix and got the table to display differently from the way the same table is displayed below, now that I changed it myself torowspan=4
. - With kind regards;
Patrick. ツ Pdebee.(talk)(become old-fashioned!) 20:05, 18 March 2022 (UTC)
Dear Asartea,
Please ignore my reply above, with my apologies; unfortunately, I missed the end of your sentence, where you added: "(see User:Asartea/sandbox)." You have clearly fixed it, which is wonderful! I will have a close look at your solution in order to learn from it, and then adopt the same code as a new version of the table. Thank you so much for your kind and helpful assistance!
With kind regards;

Would you consider becoming a New Page Reviewer?
Hi Pdebee, I've recently been looking for editors to invite to join the new page reviewing team. Reviewing/patrolling a page doesn't take much time but it requires a good understanding of Wikipedia policies and guidelines; the new page reviewing team needs help from experienced users. Would you please consider becoming a New Page Reviewer? Kindly read the tutorial before making your decision (if it looks daunting, don't worry, most pages are easy to review, and habits are quick to develop). If this looks like something that you can do, please consider joining us. If you choose to apply, you can drop an application over at WP:PERM/NPR. If you have questions, please feel free to drop a message on my talk page or at the reviewer's discussion board. Cheers, and hope to see you around, (t · c) buidhe 17:37, 10 June 2022 (UTC) |
Your Places in Finland list
Hello, I am not sure if you are updating your list "Places in Finland", but I have created articles on Konginkangas and Äänekosken maalaiskunta. ---- Kapulakone (talk) 14:23, 20 August 2022 (UTC)
- Dear colleague Kapulakone ,
Thank you so much for making contact, and belated welcome to Wikipedia! (I’ve just added a Welcome template to your talk page, so it’s no longer showing in red ).
Thank you also for enquiring about my Finnish locations project, which I have left dormant for quite some time now, I am ashamed to admit! Would you like to participate in this project? If so, please feel free to use its structure if you wish; as you probably gathered, my main goal was to create articles which are currently missing here at the anglophone Wiki, simply by translating the equivalent articles at the Finnish Wiki. By the way, I can’t speak Suomen Kieli, but I discovered that Google translator does a fairly good job. I had asked a Finnish Wikipedian to assist me, but then discovered that she had left the project. In any case, please go ahead and take over this project if you wish, and I send you my very best wishes of success!
With kind regards for now;

Dear colleague,
Thank you so much for taking the time to post the above message! It's always a pleasure to welcome new editors, especially those who, like you, apply good quality improvements from the beginning; well done! I also commend you for taking the time to provide useful edit summaries, which is really good practice and helpful to other editors. Therefore, when you have the time, please consider looking at my subpage of sample edit summaries, which I developed partly to remind myself of the myriad of editorial guidelines from our Manual of Style. This approach saves me a lot of time and might therefore be helpful to you also, although I hasten to add that it's only a suggestion: you are under no obligation to go to such lengths in your own edit summaries! In any case, I hope you will enjoy being part of our project and that you will find it interesting and rewarding.
All very best wishes, and thank you for contributing to our encyclopaedia.

I have just created a navbox for Template:Films by Charles Saunders by moving its final draft from user space into main space, but I am not sure I have completed the task correctly, because the 'v' and 't' are still shown in red font. Please would one of the helpful editors manning the Help Desk kindly double-check this and let me know what I might have done wrong, if anything, and what I should do to correct it? Very many thanks in advance!

Thank you so much for your prompt review and most helpful correction! Happy holidays!
Happy Holidays and Happy New Year, Patrick!
The other day, I was having a conversation with someone about holiday cards and social media. It occurred to me that, in the years since I left Facebook, the site I use most to communicate with people I like isn't actually a social media site at all. If you're receiving this, it's pretty likely I've talked with you more recently than I have my distant relatives and college friends on FB, at very least, and we may have even collaborated on something useful. So here's a holiday "card", Wikipedia friend. :) Hope the next couple weeks bring some fun and/or rest. — Rhododendrites talk \\ 18:49, 22 December 2022 (UTC)
- Dear Ryan
Thank you so much for your friendly post, and my very best seasonal wishes to you too! I know exactly what you mean and I certainly feel the same way: I am often amazed at how editors just focus on the task at hand instead of just chatting about non-encyclopaedic matters. And it is clear that when we collaborate on a given topic, this shared focus helps to develop a sense of trust in each other's abilities and willingness to help and learn, which I find truly heartening. So, thank you for your part in this, and for being a Wikifriend to me and—most likely—many others!
I send you my best wishes for a wonderful holiday season and a happy new year, in good health, joyful spirits, and a sense of achievement here at the Wiki.
