Benefits for Namibian Veterans
[edit]Veteran, is a referral name given to all individuals who contributed to the Liberation struggle of Namibia .i.e war veterans and other destitute people. The Namibian government contemplated on supporting and caring for all those that dedicated their life to the liberation struggle in pursuit of the nations happiness.
The government introduced a body that regulates the benefits of legitimate veterans .i.e the Ministry of Veterans Affairs. The Ministry's responsibility, is to register all Veterans as well as relatives of the deceased veterans and in turn put up formal structures, to approve and issue Veteran status, on how to roll out the compensations .[1]
Increasing Number of Veterans:
[edit]27 000 people had been issued Veteran status whilst 5 738 dependents of deceased veterans also received the same privilege out of a total 43 590 applications. This figure includes 1650 applications from the struggle children.[2]
Veterans Budget
[edit]The Minister of Veterans Affairs, Nickey Iyambo requested in parliament, a budget of N$1.6 million to be approved by government during the tabling of the 2012/2013 financial year. Each registered veteran is projected to pocket a non-taxable monthly allowance of N$2200. The minister additionally requested N$2.5 million for education grants and N$700 000 for burial expenditures of veterans.[3]

Ministers point of view
[edit]The minister recently presented amendments to the Veterans act, which will see more people rewarded for any momentary participation in the Liberation struggle receiving tokens of appreciation.
The Eligible candidates include:
[edit]- People detained before or after the Cassinga Massacre of 1978, who discontinued participation after their release.
- People detained at Vietnam camp, released and discontinued fighting.
- Widows and Widowers of war veterans, to receive benefits for a year.
