es.wiki: From Sister Ray
[edit]HI!! You left a message in my page requesting for help, but i can see you are a experienced Wikipedist!! Well, I would like to help you in everything you need (even though I'm an amateur) or want, specially if your most serious problems are related with spanish languaje. So,what can I do for you? Write me in my page, and you could start to fill your own page in wikipedia spanish, not only receive message in this one. I'm really sorry for my terrible, horrible english, you can help me out with this too. So, now we are connected, the process is now working. The big question is: What can I do for you?
Here I am. Hasta luego!!
(I cannot leave a signature because I'm registrated in Wikipedia spanish, and if I try to redirect you to my page, you will end reading about some star and about the velvet underground (of course). I understand that one of your "rules" is that everyone must put their signature on the messages that they write to you, but now you will have to apologize me because I cannot do that. I'm no mistery, you already found me. Now you can start using the other account in wiki spanish so everyone can sign your book of visits. I´ll be seing you. I apologize again for my english. Sure you understand.)

- And what do you intend to do with this username? Yes, the password can be changed.--Orgullomoore 06:54, 1 October 2005 (UTC)
- It can be done, but based on the responses in the café section, it doesn't look like they want to do it. Okay, some of them do, but most of them are asking (1) How do we know you don't have a plot and (2) Why can't you just use another name and link to your en: page, and have Paul Klenk in your signature? FYI, this guy has been blocked forever on es: so there is not really the risk of him stealing your identity--Orgullomoore 07:22, 1 October 2005 (UTC) PS: Yeah, use my es: cuz I check it more and am more active in es:
- Thank you, you are also being exceptionally patient. However, I must say, I don't own the Wikipedia and we try to go by consensus over there. I can't just change it while others oppose it. Also, these aren't just little buggie other users, we're talkin' other admins here. Several users cite that the same thing has happened in our wiki before and they have just had to conform. It's a nice idea that you have, registering in every wiki and what not but, as I said, I'm not the boss. I've been trusted with the authority and I'm not going to go against the grain just because. If you want to, you might stop by #es.wikipedia on freenode's IRC server, both of the opposing users tend to hang out there (though I'm not sure they are awake right now..) It sure would make things alot easier on me. Wikis are great, but they aren't instant messaging. --Orgullomoore 07:54, 1 October 2005 (UTC)

- I hear everything you're saying. I have left messages at Chwely (sp?) and angus asking them to visit this page and read my "plea" and my reasoning behind it. I really am encouraged that we're halfway there, Orgullo. One more "case" for me is, this all did happen instantaneously -- it is a pretty extraordinary case. It is not like I "happened upon" a user name today that I wanted. Do keep in mind that this user did some vandalism -- something I have never done on any site -- so that gives you some more ammunition that if there is a plot, it is he and not I that is plotting. He was obviously watching my English page and jumped in ahead of me.
- I'll keep my fingers crossed and make a point to buy you all beers when you visit NYC for Wikimania 2006.
- By the way, can you believe my German and Dutch pages are already translated? Go take a look at them. In fact, the German guy who translated my page is a first-time user today -- my page was his 2nd or 3rd edit! Give me faith in people. I'm a pretty experienced Wiki and sometimes even I'm surprised. paul klenk talk 08:02, 1 October 2005 (UTC)

Thanks Paul for registering with nl.wikipedia and your feedback on my talk page. Since we still don't use welcome bots, it's always nice to get some response.

pl New User Log
[edit]Hi again Paul.
Hmm... Funny thing, actually. We don't have a New User Log. I guess nobody thought about that. :P You seem to be all over the place so tell me, is this (the New User Log) a common international practice? I hardly stick my nose outside plwiki and enwiki so I haven't the slightest clue. Do the Germans, the French and others each have one?
Best,
TOR 21:01, 1 October 2005 (UTC)
P.S. We can continue this discussion here on en.
- Always nice to see a community spirit. Espcially an international one. :) I cannot promise anything but I'll try to get your user page translated somewhere around tommorow (CEST tommorow, i.e. Monday). And I will talk to the others about that New Users Log thingy. Who knows, maybe we'll have one soon. Cheers, TOR 22:41, 1 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit]Dude, I love the idea of copying a user page to other languages! Brilliant! I'm afraid that I'm limited to basic Spanish and Italian, but not enough to be able to contribute in a way that'll make grammatical sense. - Lucky 6.9 22:15, 1 October 2005 (UTC)
I am truly speechless. If this isn't the best possible way to contribute to this site, I don't know what is. Absolutely marvelous idea. I may just ask Spanish to translate my page since I can read it fairly well. This will be fun! - Lucky 6.9 22:35, 1 October 2005 (UTC)

Dutch Grammar
[edit]hi, i'm in the process of translating this Dutch Grammar into english. should this be placed on the en: or made a reference to it? tnx Aleichem 09:53, 2 October 2005 (UTC)
- PS maybe the same in 16 languages? + shortlist of words? Aleichem 10:08, 2 October 2005 (UTC)
- Dutch Grammar
- Such an article already exists (en:Dutch grammar) on en:wiki (Note: we only capitalize the first word of an article at en:wiki, unless it is a proper noun. Also note the :en: and :nl: method of creating links between sites.) Of course, the current article could work in any language. If the English version is of high quality, translators of other languages can be invited to take it to any wiki they like. I think this is a good model, too, Aleichem, for many articles: 1] See if an article already exists at en:wiki; 2] If not, write a new Dutch article, or translate an existing one into English; 3] Work hard to polish and perfect it; 4] Then invite others to take it world-wide.
- We should see if other similar non-English-language grammar articles exist on en:wiki, to use as models. (You're going to have me speaking Dutch if you're not careful!)
- Speaking of which, 1] are you familiar with the international phonetic alphabet, and 2] do you have a guide to Dutch pronunciation in that alphabet? I could start learning to pronounce Dutch before I know what the words mean (I've done this in Italian, French and Spanish). paul klenk talk
- some 'overworked' sysop did remove the page. Aleichem 04:33, 3 October 2005 (UTC)

My name is Paul Klenk, and I live in New York City (NYC). I'd like to make friends in the world-wide Wikipedia community. I have user pages in the 15 largest non-English wikis, all with the same user name. One of the pages I have written is New York's Village Halloween Parade. I am the sole author of this article, and hope you enjoy it. I would love to see it translated into another language.

If you would like to collaborate, contact me and we can talk about your idea. I have advanced skills in editing. I am happy to assist in proofreading English translations and polishing language, syntax and punctuation. I can also help you navigate the English wiki and find the correct page for your questions or concerns.

- Hello. You changed "Japanese" with "母語" in my discussion page. Well, "母語" is not Japanese. "母語" means "mother-tongue". "Japanese (language)" in Japanese is "日本語". "日本" (Nihon) is Japan and "語" (go) is word/language. So Japanese is Nihon + go = Nihongo (日本語).
- BTW. How did you find my Japanese user page? I have "Maris stella" pages in Japanese Wiki and English Wiki. (In addition, there are French and German pages of Maris stella.) But I have not made the interlinks connecting these pages. Cordially, Maris stella 12:55, 3 October 2005 (UTC)

IN RE BigDaddy777 RfA
[edit]Several questions (you can answer here and I'll watch):
- I am listed as a "complainer" -- but am actually only an interested party, and have no real complaints about BD. I have much more criticism with BD's accusers than anything he has done. I never endorsed the RfC but actually have much to say. How/where do I indicate this on the RfA?
- Does one really bring arbitration "against" another user? Isn't that an oxymoron? Someone has been using that word when referring to the RfA, and I think it is inappropriate. Arbitration should be "between" parties, not against them. And it should be controlled by neutral parties, and aimed at resolving the dispute, no?
Thanks, Fred.
- Ok, go to Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration/BigDaddy777 and edit it to suit yourself. Whoever made the request listed you. At this point I don't know who is who at this point. You can make a statement below BD's if you wish. Keep in mind that editing that page MAKES you a party in my opinion. However if you simply wish to remove any mention of yourself as one of the parties that would make you not a party. Putting material on /Evidence is a different matter. Fred Bauder 17:27, 3 October 2005 (UTC)
- I don't have a lot of patience with trying to find the correct way of saying things. Of course, folks bring arbitration cases against other users which results in an arbitration between them. One person or several initiate the case and could be called plaintiffs (or something else). The person complained of could be called the defendent; but often has a better complaint than those who started it. Arbitrators recuse themselves if they feel they are not neutral parties. We sometimes do attempt mediation or what amounts to a plea bargain, but the time to resolve the matter is before you take it to arbitration. One of the talking points during mediation ought to be, "Do you want to take this to arbitration which might result in an unpleasant remedy." Our efforts to craft more forgiving remedies works against this since there is no reason to settle if you win by hanging tough. Fred Bauder 17:27, 3 October 2005 (UTC)

Your page in the Russian wiki
[edit]Greetings Paul, I have translated your brand-new user page in the Russian wikipedia :) One thing I wasn't sure about was, how to best translate the name "New York Village" (in my mind, the word "village" doesn't really go well if translated directly; it mostly relates to a rural settlement in Russian). For now, I put it up as something like, "New York Greeenwich district". Let me know if this feels wrong and I'll try to think of something better for you. As to your question about the new user log... frankly, I am not sure about this myself but I think you might want to try the the russian wikipedia village pump, it is certainly being checked out quite frequently.
Wanted to also say, your Halloween Parade article looks really great! Although I am afraid I won't be able to lend you much help with the translation of the article itself as I am very limited in time and can't really commit to anything of that scope. I am hoping strongly that enthusiasts interested in collaborating with you in that exciting project will come forth and make it a success! However don't hesitate to let me know if I can be of more help, and I'll try what I can. Good luck and cheers - ru:User:Bepa Introvert talk 02:06, 4 October 2005 (UTC)
- Having had all the coffee and still munching yummy cookies, jigging around... What a beautiful, fantastic babel-star, what a fabulous award. My first one too :) Thank you very much, you really shouldn't have to.
- You are asking, "how did you learn of my user page" - I noticed your question on the main talk page of the Russian wikipedia, and looked up the user, nothing magic :) Before any confusion - my real name is Vera, which is Вера in cyrillic; my user name on other wikies where I happened to register, is Introvert (which I think I am). Thank you for your kind offer of help, I might take you up on that one :) and again, I'd be happy to help what I can as well. Best wishes with your international project - ru:User:Bepa Introvert talk 06:40, 4 October 2005 (UTC)
BigDaddy777
[edit]Fvw,
User BigDaddy777 has informed me that he is blocked for 24 hours, for violating 3RR.
I have some questions about this:
- Since he does not appear to be named in the complaint, why was he blocked?
- Was he blocked for other behavior besides 3RR or sock puppetry? If not:
- If it was for sock puppetry, what is the evidence of that, if any?
- Which, if any, of the edits listed on the complaint have been attributed to him, and on what evidence?
- I noticed one of the IPs was alleged to be from Halliburton. As BigDaddy777 seems to be a truck driver (I am double checking this), how would it be he has access to HB's corporate servers?
Thanks for taking the time to answer these questions. I will leave them on the 3RR page as well, in case someone else has the answers.
paul klenk talk 02:03, 4 October 2005 (UTC)
- It seemed likely to me he was the sockpuppeteer behind those IPs, given his past editing behaviour and the fact that these anonymous users suddenly popped up when he needed reversions. --fvw* 02:08, 4 October 2005 (UTC)
- "Likely..." What actual evidence in this case, based on the edits themselves? Others on that page have also violated 3RR in the past. What past behavior bears on these specific edits? Are you familiar enough with his writing style to see any correlations in style, etc.? I am, and I do not believe it is him. Further (of course) he is denying this. Are you also aware that guettarda and elee... have been egregiously and maliciously throwing around accusations and behaving extraordinarily uncivil towards him; if not, does that give you cause to rethink this? What reversions did he "need"? It seems to me you are going on an unreasonably arbitrary basis, especially since he was not listed on the complaint, and it does not appear
- I would like to cordially ask you to consider unblocking him while this so-called evidence is being compiled. If, after he is unblocked, it can be proven he sock-puppeted or broke 3RR, I will allow you to block me for 24 hours (in addition to re-blocking BigDaddy777, if you so desire).
- I will wait for your response. Please address my specific questions. Your last answer was extremely vague and general.
- Thank you in advance for your time. paul klenk talk 02:20, 4 October 2005 (UTC)
- They were reversions, so there was no specific edit style. If I'm handling 3RR reports of others on that page I'll process them just as I have this one. --fvw* 02:27, 4 October 2005 (UTC)
- Thank you for the clarification; it makes sense. Reversions are reversions.
- They were reversions, so there was no specific edit style. If I'm handling 3RR reports of others on that page I'll process them just as I have this one. --fvw* 02:27, 4 October 2005 (UTC)
- So, getting back to my questions, which did you attribute to BigDaddy and on what evidence? Why was he blocked when he was not named? I noticed guettarda (I think) accused him of making anonymous edits. This is only partially true; he used an anonymous IP but always signed his edits "Big Daddy on the road," and no evidence has ever been provided that he has ever sock puppeted. Of course there are lots of reckless allegations, but no evidence of any kind?
- Please explain what policy Big Daddy violated to get him blocked. I apologize if I sound indignant; this is not personal -- but you are not explaining this block, nor are you specifically addressing these questions. paul klenk talk 02:40, 4 October 2005 (UTC)
- Based on timing and bigdaddy's behaviour I suspect that they were sockpuppets of Bigdaddy's. I'm can't give a twelve page powerpoint presentation of statistical correlations, it's a judgement call. --fvw* 02:48, 4 October 2005 (UTC)
- Please explain what policy Big Daddy violated to get him blocked. I apologize if I sound indignant; this is not personal -- but you are not explaining this block, nor are you specifically addressing these questions. paul klenk talk 02:40, 4 October 2005 (UTC)
The list of alleged sockpuppets of BigDaddy777 in his RFA is ludicrous. I honestly think there are some people here who can't tell the difference between one conservative and another. There are people listed who clearly have a much higher vocabulary and (trying not to make a personal attack here) are just much more capable of rational discourse than BigDaddy. There are also people who have never even edited the same pages.
I agree BigDaddy probably needs to be pitched off this site. But the idea that he has ever sockpuppeted (until, possibly, just recently) seems to be completely groundless and not at all well thought out. It almost lends credence to his assertions that there is bias against and organized persecution of conservatives on Wikipedia. It makes it look like instead of him being banned for bad behavior that we drove him to it.
Yesterday I worked with a guy who reverted a page on a conservative website four times because he wanted to add some material he thought was damaging to the website. Apparently he was working from an astroturfing campaign spawned by a liberal website, but I didn't care. The information could stand or fall on its own. I successfully got him working on the article talk page instead of repeatedly reverting the article, where the consensus seemed to be growing to not include the information. I wonder: do people treat new users who are conservative the way I treated this guy? Jdavidb 14:09, 5 October 2005 (UTC)
- just for the record, i also think this sockpuppet thing borders on a witchhunt. see my comments on eleemysonary's page. jdavidb, i think an awful lot of it depends on newcomer attitude, regardless of politics. i do think most people give newbies of any stripe a chance by seriously engaging them, just like you did. i know i do. i see if they respond to reasoned argument and friendliness in kind or with blustering battleground rhetoric. that response is what makes the difference in reception; and i think that's true across the spectrum, left and right. if pushed far enough though, i'll brawl right back with anyone, newbie or not. Derex 15:48, 5 October 2005 (UTC)
- I agree with Derex, both regarding the treatment of new possibly problem editors and the witchunt aspect of the sockpuppet hunt. Hipocrite - «Talk» 16:06, 5 October 2005 (UTC)
I agree that the response makes all the difference, too. I do think that sometimes some editors are less willing to give a chance for a conservative POV-pusher to reform. But overall Wikipedia is exhorbitantly tolerant and longsuffering. Moreso than I would prefer, most of the time, particularly in regards to people who show up with no intent other than to post linkspam. I certainly don't think BigDaddy's response was in any way appropriate, and as of yet I don't see any evidence that a different response would have reformed him. Jdavidb 16:13, 5 October 2005 (UTC)
Thank you
[edit]For your kind words. If we can somehow find common ground, I'm interested to try. You don't have to do nice things for me, just do them for everyone :) Anyway, this effort on your part to bridge the gulf in our outlook is appreciated. The only piece of advice I'd offer about the BD RR vio's (and in fact, the purported RR vio of mine you reported) is that when bringing a vio, let the admins respond and try to leave it at that. It causes ongoing bad will to try to 'push' the issue after the admins opine and decide. Your interest in the truth is admirable, but in so doing, your energy may be misdirected. Just my opinion, please do not take offense - as none is intended. -- RyanFreisling @ 04:55, 4 October 2005 (UTC)

If you have any other article that you'd like to see in our wiki, just tell me. :) Alensha 13:21, 6 October 2005 (UTC)
Hi & thank you for the barnstar. I'm working on the Halloween parade article now and I like it very much, you have every reason to be proud of it. Can I copy all those pictures to our wiki or to Commons? I don't know much about this copyright stuff... :-) Alensha 18:07, 6 October 2005 (UTC)

- Gator, I don't think I will. My views are too complex to be categorized, and I am not even a registered Republican. paul klenk talk 15:42, 6 October 2005 (UTC)
Your page in catalan
[edit]I've just translated the first paragraphs of your user page in catalan, I'll finish it later. Anyway... welcome to the catalan wikipedia! --80.102.183.103 (Oersted) 20:02, 6 October 2005 (UTC)
I've been investigating the alarming behaviour of this user, including his violation of several of our policies, and plan to start on the most appropriate form of dispute resolution as soon as I have prepared some evidence. Part of that evidence is contained in the abusive comments this user has made towards you.
I would therefore like to extend an invitation to you to advise me of any other users you are aware of that Imdaking has been particularly foul towards. Everything I have is going on User:Robchurch/Imdaking. All help would be appreciated, and if you would like to join me in whatever action I decide to take, you are most welcome to do so.
This user's behaviour is not acceptable. Rob Church Talk 22:56, 6 October 2005 (UTC)
- Thank you. Any assistance, however small, will be gratefully accepted. Rob Church Talk 23:04, 6 October 2005 (UTC)
- If you want your article be transalted to others languages, please upload the pictures to commons, so they can easyly appear also in the translated versions of your article and they can be so beautiful as the original. Thanks Arno Lagrange ✉ 05:58, 7 October 2005 (UTC)
- It seems Alensha did it for the hungarian translation but didn't create a category nor a link to commons; I created it but I didn't categorize all pictures. Please find them from the hungarian WP. Arno Lagrange ✉ 05:58, 7 October 2005 (UTC)
To your message in the Hungarian Wikipedia
[edit]Thanks for your message and your kind offer. I think I'll certainly need your help with some articles sooner or later, because I've already asked for help from other native speakers for other articles (like for Kató Lomb, which is supposed to be good English now). I have plans for other articles as well. So thanks again; let's keep in touch! -- Adam78 12:26, 7 October 2005 (UTC)
Translation of user page to sl:
[edit]Hi Paul. I am volunteering for translation of your user page to Slovene. Just let me know what do you need exactly. Best regards. --xJaM 15:03, 7 October 2005 (UTC)
your non-English Wiki user pages
[edit]A suggestion: You can add your other user pages as interwiki links, just like the interwiki links for regular Wikipedia articles. For example, my user page has ja:利用者:BlankVerse to connect to my user page on the Japanese Wikipedia. Once you've set it up for one page, you can then just copy the same code to each of your other user pages to create the same interwiki links.
The Sister projects, unfortunately, don't allow a similar interwiki link, but you can see at the top of my user page the abbreviated links that I've created to my user pages on the different sister projects (b=Wikibooks, c=Commons, m-Meta, etc.). I've even created accounts on the EvoWiki and WikiTravel Wikis and added abbreviated links to those Wikis. BlankVerse ∅ 15:45, 7 October 2005 (UTC)
- The difference is that your are using the inline linking method like this, de (notice the colon after the brackets), so the links show up in the main edit area of your user page itself. If you do de:User:Paul Klenk instead, then they show up as links in the sidebar below the navigation, search and toolbox boxes on the left side of your page (if you are using the default monobook skin). See on my user page how the link the the Japanese Wikipedia shows up in Kanji below the toolbox box. You can see on my Japanese Wiki user page that I have interwiki links to both my Enlish and Simple Wikipedia user pages. If you wanted, you could both types of links on your user page, but I prefer the uncluttered method of just using the Interlanguage links links. BlankVerse ∅ 16:37, 7 October 2005 (UTC)
