Image of George Mackarness

Patience, before you leap into the murky world of image uploads, can I help you get it clear how the image needs to be licence before some of those who are very hot on picking out mistakes jump on you and the image you upload.

That George died in 1883 should make things easier, but to help can you answer the following questions:

Is there any indication who the photographer was? if so, who and do you know when they died?
has the image been published anywhere else before you published it on [1]? If so, when?

I know this sounds like it's making what should be simple, complicated but unfortunately US & UK copyright laws both have to be obeyed and they are very different and have very different periods of copyright. leave your answers on this page and I'll see them. then I can advise you how to correctly licence the photo. Sorry but I don't know the answers to any of these! The image - like almost all those on The Mackarness Place website - was in my father's family archive. It appears to be a good quality copy of a photo taken when George was Bishop of Argyll and the Isles. It has his name and dates written on the back, in my father or grandmother's handwriting, but there is nothing about the photographer.

Patience, not a problem. Time is not something to worry about on Wikipedia. So it looks like either a family shot or more likely, given it's age, a shot by an unknown professional photographer. That makes it fairly easy to licence. You can upload it to Wikipedia using both the following licences {{PD-UK-unknown}} and {{PD-US-unpublished}}, this establishes it's public domain status is both the UK and the US. If you have a username like this, you should request a change of username or create a new account. (A name that identifies the user as an individual within a given organization may be OK.)

Just trying to understand where the conflict of interest lies? - is it to do with having Mackarness as a username? I certainly feel I can be neutral about a great-great uncle who died 130+ years ago, and have only added in some dates, one of his incumbencies and the fact that he was a second not a younger son!

Let me know if I need to submit these kinds of changes for approval in future.
