User talk:Orr's rifles Grt.Grandson
Aloha & you're welcome. I thought it high time Orr's Rifles (hereafter, abbreviated 1SCRR) had a page, and I just created it two days ago, so good timing on your part, looking for it now. My Dad's Mom's paternal grandfather (i.e., my great, great grandfather) John Green Edwards was a lieutenant in "B" company of the regiment: he was the "in" for my great aunts in joining the UDC back in the 1950s. Actually, J.G. was from Northampton County (I think), North Carolina: family lore has it that NC didn't secede quickly enough for him, which is why he enlisted in 1SCRR (although by July 1861, NC had seceded two months earlier, so I really don't KNOW that! But then, why was he in SC?)
As to your questions about the battles: just to make sure we're talking about the same thing, the list of battles 1SCRR definitely took part in is only in the template on the right, in chronological order, and you'll see that "Second Manassas" is there, seventh entry down. "Antietam" is listed there as "Sharpsburg" (10th entry) - this is a stylistic choice of mine, because that's what the battle is called in many Confederate sources (apparently, the CSA tended to name things after towns, while the USA named them after rivers: think Manassas vs. Bull Run).
As for "First Deep Bottom" - which one!? I'm not being flippant about this, because I think you've hit on something that I missed. What date are you thinking of? Here's what I found...
- Battle of Franklin's Crossing
- 5 June 1863, AKA Deep Run Battle - definite mention of A.P.Hill's Corps & worth researching to determine if 1SCRR participated;
- First Deep Bottom
- 27-29 July 1864 - no indication here of 1SCRR involvement;
- Battle of White Oak Road
- 31 March 1865, AKA Gravelly Run - not sure 1SCRR was there.
I appreciate hearing about your great great uncle & your conjecture as to why he's listed as KIA--makes sense to me. The strength of Wikipedia is, if I get something wrong, you can put it right, so thanks for participating & don't be afraid to speak up. Hywel Dda (talk) 03:33, 10 July 2013 (UTC)
