Welcome

Hullo, Orannis! I hope you enjoy editing Wikipedia. Here are some links to help you effectively help on Wikipedia:

If you are unsure about what to do, take a job from the tasklist.

You can help improve the articles listed below! This list updates frequently, so check back here for more tasks to try. (See Wikipedia:Maintenance or the Task Center for further information.)

Help counter systemic bias by creating new articles on important women.

Help improve popular pages, especially those of low quality.

Wikipedians have a policy of never biting newbies, so don't feel shy to ask for help. If you need help immediately with anything, you can write helpme on your userpage or place a comment on my talk page. By the way...cool userpage! Don't forget to be BOLD!!!!--The ikiroid (talk/parler/hablar/paroli/说/話) 01:54, 27 March 2006 (UTC)

Hello yourself, Mr. Ikiroid! I forgot about that whole "welcome wagon" thing. I know the basics of Wikipedia and can do a good deal to this site of all sites if I ever actually put my mind to it. Well, thank you for a jumpstart in my Wikipedia membership, I could really use it!
And man, do you know a lot of languages! I'm also pursuing fluency in German and Arabic. Thanks again! The Ninth Bright Shiner 01:56, 28 March 2006 (UTC)
Thank you for the compliment, although my proficiency in many of the languages is still small. At the moment I'm actively learning french and chinese. I do want to learn some arabic, although I'm not quite sure what part of my mouth I use to pronounce 'ayin. You try reading some of the German and Arabic wikipedia articles—it helps immerse yourself in the language. ;)--The ikiroid (talk/parler/hablar/paroli/说/話) 02:25, 28 March 2006 (UTC)

What a Name

Hey, I was just wondering what your name means. I mean, I went to the trouble of explaining everything out on my User page, what about you? What is "Ikiroid?"

The coolest guy you know - The Ninth Bright Shiner 19:46, 29 March 2006 (UTC)

Well...."iki" is extracted from the japanese "ikiru", to live, and "iki" can also mean "to go". "-oid" is a greek suffix that means "almost" or "not quite", so it sort of means "pseudohuman", "robot", "alternative personality", or "a little less than something, but not nothing". I left its meaning kind of open so you could decide for yourself ;).--The ikiroid (talk/parler/hablar/paroli/说/話) 19:49, 29 March 2006 (UTC)
P.S. Now that you mention it, I should probably explain that on my userpage.--The ikiroid (talk/parler/hablar/paroli/说/話) 19:51, 29 March 2006 (UTC)

About signatures

OK. First figure out, using the sandbox, what the code of your signature will be. You'll need to be familiar with the hypertext code used on Wikipedia, so you might need help with that. For example, the code for my signature is quite complicated:

<samp><span style="color: green">The</span></samp> <span style="color: black">i</span><span style="color: blue">kiro</span><span style="color: black">id</span> (<small>talk/parler/hablar/paroli/说/話</small>)

That's the hard part. If you get that done, paste it as your signature under the nickname box in "my preferences" and click "raw signature". I hope this helps :). If you have any more questions, feel free to contact me, but I'll be on somewhat of a wikibreak in the next few days. However, I'll try to respond if I can.--The ikiroid (talk/parler/hablar/paroli/说/話) 17:08, 4 April 2006 (UTC)

You notified me on my talk page about the picture in my sig: While it's considered "frowned upon" by some, it's not by others. Nobody seems to have a problem with it. SWATJester Ready Aim Fire! 05:37, 18 April 2006 (UTC)

Signature

I'm using this code --> Phroziac ♥♥♥♥ <-- and you have to check the raw signature box for it to work. :) --Phroziac ♥♥♥♥ 12:09, 10 April 2006 (UTC)

Helpme

Hi, what do you need help with? You can ask you question here and place the helpme template at the end so we know to check back.--Commander Keane 22:57, 21 April 2006 (UTC)

I've been trying to get a suitable signature for quite a while, and my latest stab at it hasn't work. Yes, I've put this question on the newcomer's help page, and it receivied an answer, although one that didn't quite help, and seems to have been generally ignored since. It's just, when I type ~~~, I get this:
<b><i><font style="background:black" color: silver>The Ninth Bright Shine</font><font style="background:black" color: silver>r</font></i></b> talk
Which is the basic code to make what I wanted:
The Ninth Bright Shiner talk
Plus, how would different fonts be put in? And also about signatures, I've read that you should avoid including pictures in your signature. However, I've seen several people with pictures in their singatures, and I even tried to innocently point out to one that they shouldn't, and I got some snappy reply. Is it really that harmful or not? After all this trouble, I might just forget the whole thing. Thanks for the help.
helpme is really only for matters concerning the building of the encyclopedia.--Commander Keane 23:41, 21 April 2006 (UTC)
Perhaps if you're still having problems, you should post your issue at Wikipedia:Village pump. However, I would not perseverate on it too long, most wikipedians will judge users by their contributions, not their signature or userpage (despite how cool they can get;D). P.S. did you know Keanu Reeves is from Lebanon?--The ikiroid (talk parler hablar paroli 说 話し parlar) 00:50, 22 April 2006 (UTC)

Sorry you're upset. I'd suggest going back to the last signature that worked in your browser and use that.--The ikiroid (talk parler hablar paroli 说 話し parlar) 02:00, 22 April 2006 (UTC)

What you are using should work. Have you tried selecting the 'raw signature box in "my preferences" to see what effect that has? Open up a second window and use the show preview button to sign your talk page until you get the right result. Andrewjuren(talk) 22:25, 25 April 2006 (UTC)
Enter the following into your nickname:
<b><i><span style="background: black; color: silver">The Ninth Bright Shiner</span></i></b>talk
It should look like this: The Ninth Bright Shinertalk

Helpme (2)

Hi, anything I can help with?

Yes. You see, there are two images in Wikipedia that are of the flag of Lebanon, this one and that one. The latter uses a darker shade of red, whereas the former uses a lighter shade of red. According to my experience with the Lebanese flag, the first one should be correct, as that is how I have always seen it. I tried verifying this information on the Internet, but I came up with wildly differing shades and cedar tree shapes. What exactly might be the correct flag?
And also, the Lebanese coat of arms has a cedar tree on it, but the trunk is colored brown. According to the article for the flag, "It is a common mistake to draw the branches of the cedar in brown or black. Nevertheless the mistake is unconstitutional. The cedar must be full green." Wouldn't this apply to the Coat of Arms as well? A search engine results in most, if not all coats of arms having full green cedars.--The Ninth Bright Shiner 22:39, 25 April 2006 (UTC)

Anything I can help with? Bjelleklang - talk 22:45, 25 April 2006 (UTC)

Um, yes, the question I just asked?--The Ninth Bright Shiner 22:48, 25 April 2006 (UTC)
Ah, actually I'm not sure. The colors of certain flags have a tendency to vary very often, for example as with the Norwegian flag, where the darker blue is often light blue or black (similar to the lebanese flag.) The best would probably be if you could find some sort of official goverment site, and use the shade of red you can find there. Bjelleklang - talk 23:02, 25 April 2006 (UTC)
This is something that should be discussed on the article's talk page. Andrewjuren(talk) 23:10, 25 April 2006 (UTC)

Fair Use

Please do not post Fair Use images on user page, this is a breach of copyright. Fair Use images specifically say that they are to be only used in a relavent context, and a rationale for why must accompany this. I have removed the Wii images from your gallery, please remove all others (the Mario in your userboxes is an example) from your userpage. Highway Rainbow Sneakers 22:50, 13 May 2006 (UTC)

See Wikipedia:Fair use for more information.--The ikiroid (talk)(Help Me Improve) 01:17, 15 May 2006 (UTC)
Sorry about that. I forgot about the whole fair use thing. Actually, I didn't know what fair use was. The images have been removed. Thanks for the link, Ikiroid.--The Ninth Bright Shiner talk 20:41, 16 May 2006 (UTC)
Oh hey, sorry but I just noticed a lingering Mario image, so I replaced with "Image:smile.png". Happy editting, Highway Rainbow Sneakers 22:50, 21 May 2006 (UTC)
Hm? I could've sworn that I took that image out and replaced it with "Sony." Ah well. Thanks!--The Ninth Bright Shiner talk 20:13, 22 May 2006 (UTC)

Heh, I have a pair of them, and my userpage was modelled on them (by Sango123). Ah, well, since you popped up when I was dealing with big (at least for me) issues, like the Flag of Lebanon and the Abhorsen page move, I thought that you deserved to be there. Plus, you seemed like quite the able-minded editor, what with having such proficiency in languages. But should you question awards, or just accept them? ;)--The Ninth Bright Shiner talk 20:42, 12 June 2006 (UTC)
I certainly didn't mean to question them, I was just curious, since your name somehow seemed familiar, but I couldn't remember how I interacted with you. :)Nightstallion (?) 12:33, 14 June 2006 (UTC)

When editing, why do section headers start with two equal marks, when there's a header that has one? For example:

==Section 1: Lorem Ipsum==

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet...

===Section 1.1: Lipsum===

Blah blah blah...

Why are most pages formatted like the above? Why not be formatted like below?

=Section 1: Lorem Ipsum=

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet...

==Section 1.1: Lipsum==

Blah blah blah...

Userboxes and WP:GUS

Hey Orannis, I noticed you removed your Islam userbox from your userpage a while ago (I assume because it was changed and reworded). Well, now a lot of religious userboxes have been created in the userspace, and you can pick from a variety of them. This page seems to give you the biggest variety of choices. Anyway, cheers! The ikiroid (talk·desk·Advise me) 01:46, 12 July 2006 (UTC)

I've heard about the German userbox solution, I just forgot about it. But thanks for reminding me! I'll get around to it.
And by the way, concerning The Gallery, what would you think of as a good image to identify myself with? I'm named after a fictional character who was bound in a silver sphere that was split in half, so I was sort of thinking around those lines. And I've no idea of how to make it myself.--The Ninth Bright Shiner talk 03:28, 12 July 2006 (UTC)
You don't necessarily need an avatar, per se, a banner of your name, or a cool, weird pic you like on your page would do. If you do want to go with an image, I'd suggest something that fits your personality, interests, and fascinations all in one picture. My pic was drawn with a sharpie, scanned onto my computer, edited down a bit, than uploaded.
Since I try to reveal little about my sex, generation, and ethinicity, I picked an abiguous, quasihuman face. The outfit is loosely based on what men wore in the United States to work in the 1930's, 40's, and 50's. The era was regarded as clean, happy and efficient on the outside, but struggling with a changing world on the inside, as I do. The appearance is also an attempted hybrid at several psychological Jungian archetypes, namely, the Animus (the figure's face), the Child (the figure's height and physical disposition), and the Wise Old Man (its stare and reserved manner). They represent the way I approach judging things in the world, I use each perspective as an argument against the other while developing an opinion. Of course, you needn't make your picture have such a deep meaning, but it's a few things to keep in mind when you create your own.--The ikiroid (talk·desk·Advise me) 19:23, 13 July 2006 (UTC)
Wow. I had no idea of the depth a mere picture could hold. Well, if the process is that simple, I'll think something up. Thanks!--The Ninth Bright Shiner talk 02:19, 15 July 2006 (UTC)

You're very welcome. Myself, I really don't know the best action to take. Like I said, you could ask about what to do at Wikipedia:New contributors' help page. An administrator might be able to help, but might not. As I can't imagine any sort of solution, asking at the New contributors' help page would probably be the best thing to do for now.--the ninth bright shiner talk 04:42, 25 July 2006 (UTC)
