Copyediting
[edit]Hi OpportuneOzymandias, and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia! I wanted to give you a heads-up about copyediting; it seems like a simple task but there are some pitfalls there. The most important point is that every time you copyedit a sentence you have to make sure that you don't change the information in the sentence so as to contradict the source.
- In your edit to Newcastle Customs House, you changed "Mr. W. A. Scott's property, Newcastle House, was let to the government" to "...was given to the government", but the source clearly specifies that it was let.
- You also changed "The supplementary estimates for the year contained an amount, 1,000 pounds, for the erection of..." to "contained 1,000 pounds for the erection of..." ; your version isn't incorrect but the text was already correct before the change, and the previous version is a bit clearer.
- Finally, please be aware of this section of the Manual of Style. "despatch" is the correct spelling in Australian English, and it is really important not to trust spellchecking software that is set to another variant of English" (you are not the first person to do that :-) )
