Jeopardy

I haven't used the Jeopardy message board; most of what I know about the show comes from watching and from personal experience. As for when I was on the show, well, since I sort of like to keep my true identity mostly separate from my online activites, I'll tell you that I will be on this month, but I won't say exactly when. That's how I was sure that Ken would lose, and that there's no "next Ken" on the immediate horizon; I'm getting sort of annoyed with people trying to get in on the ground floor of documenting then next Ken. I see you changed the Ultimate Tournament of Champions page to say Jeopardy! announced the tournament on the 28th. While KABC, and many other wire outlets, leaked the story then, the press release on Jeopardy.com says the 29th. Zerg

Glad you approve. I don't know what a previous merger was thinking; seemed he was throwing that information into a random section, creating a non-sequitur and a lot of repeated information, after I previously made a strong effort to remove all redundancies, of which there were several. Anyway, I think the information is well set now. Some will still argue that Zerg should have her own article, but I have a feeling she's already been forgotten by everyone except us few who have been editing her article here. Well, seeing as Nancy Zerg had an article, and it was redirected to the Jennings article by a consensus vote of Wikipedians, I highly doubt you'll be able to put in an article about her without it being speedy-deleted. Walsh and Weikle

I'm not sure about these. A while ago, during discussions on cleaning the Ken page I suggested a separate page on game show records. I don't suppose anyone actually started such a thing? I'm not quite interested enough in the subject, though I could probably do a bit of research on the few quiz shows I'm interested in (basically the sort of stuff that's already catalogued elsewhere in WP). Anyway, I think such an article would be an ideal place for this information, especially now that the records are broken. More notable than either of these I think are a few of the "Millionaire" guys, mostly John Carpenter, who doesn't seem to have an article. OntarioQuizzer: It's a tough one. It's true, they don't have much fame outside the Jeopardy world, but then again, we have articles for lesser people. Always happy to help when it comes to a VfD of a useless article. This one is particularly bad as most of the article is just Alex saying the words "Ken Jennings" in relation to Madden. Should we include everyone who's ever been refered to as "Einstein"? I'd like to get somewhere with my Game show records proposal, but there doesn't seem to be too many people who are interested in putting effort into it, and I'd rather not do the thing too half-assed. Maybe Madden will be the next Ken, but I doubt it, and I'm content to wait and see. Anyway, when are you going to be on Jeopardy? Seems you're ready; you should go for it. I gave TacoDeposit some pointers and I'd be happy to give you some as well (if you want pointers from someone who didn't get a single win). My next aim is to be on "Millionaire" (where buzzer speed isn't an issue) but I've passed the test twice but been rejected as a contestant both times. Someone will probably get around to doing something about the Madden Vfd pretty soon. The whole 5 days thing is a minimum, and as VfD has grown so has the backlog. If I were an admin I'd probably help with it a bit, though as an active participant in the Madden VfD it would likely be seen as a conflict of interest had I closed it (all moot, not being an admin). As time goes by Madden is getting more notable, though I still don't really support an article for him at this stage. I find the guy sort of unappealing and mildly irritating, and I'm hoping he loses, but that's not releveant to the VfD. -R. fiend 19:17, 22 July 2005 (UTC)

Well, there isn't alot that can be done. I find it unfortunate that admins generally do not (and perhaps cannot) take the reasons for votes into account when tallying, and I have seen articles kept with worse reasoning. The upside is that although Madden certainly wasn't worthy of an encyclopedia article when it was written, he is now perhaps a borderline case, in my opinion. Likewise his article now says more than "Alex compared him to Ken! Wow!" Maybe if he keeps winning and becomes somewhat known outside of Jeopardy fans (though I don't see him rivaling Ken in this respect, even if he surpasses his record; after all Brad Rutter beat Ken handily but certainly doesn't match him for fame) we'll both agree his warrants an article. Then I'm sure all the keep voters will use it as "proof" that we were "wrong" when we voted to delete, because as you can tell, some people just don't get it. -R. fiend 06:37, 24 July 2005 (UTC)

"No Consensus" 'defaults to "Keep", but says nothing regarding any actual notability. Whether this guy has an article is utterly unrelated to whether he deserves to have his birthday commemorated: he's a second-rate quiz-show winner whose birthday means nothing outside his own family -- no newspaper in North America or the world (except in his hometown, possibly) is going to mark it, no almanac is going to list it, and no morning radio announcer on Planet Earth (except in his hometown, possibly) is going to mention it as part of his morning patter. Your blather about AfD is immaterial: YOU yourself said he has limited notability outside of the Jeopardy! world, and nobody really disagreed with you. Jeopardy

Hey OQ, I was wondering about something today, and I thought you might be the guy to ask. Jeopardy had a returned losing contest, brought back because of a problem with her Final Jeopardy question last year. I checked the archive, and couldn't put my finger exactly on what was wrong with it. I was particularly curious because I remmebered that question and I think i came up with the same response she did. Do you have any idea what the deal was? Was her answer technically correct as well? Or was the question they asked flawed because the the "six months" they mentioned was not exact? If you have any idea or thoughts let me know. I've become quite curious. Do you know if there's going to be a Tournament of Champions this year? I was thinking there might well not be, since between Ken's run and the multi-month Ulitmate ToC there were few opportunities for 5+, 4, or even 3 time champs. I think it should be moved to a different title and majorly revised, but not sure if deletion is advisable. Partially because I'm pretty sure an AFD will not succeed. Anyway, I glanced over the article and didn't notice any glaring factual problems. It's not well written though. Why not take a stab at making it worthwhile. Yeah, I have to admit, I don't have the Jeopardy knowledge you do, so most of those errors passed me by. Had I thought about it, I guess I would have known that there was at least one other 6+ champ. As for Spangenberg, wouldn't that have been true if they had adjusted for the doubling of values? Well, anyway, I think your total revamp of the article is fine. Sort of makes it useless, but useless is better than erroneous. Being pretty useless, though, it's probably best to remove the link to it from the Jeopardy article. Anyway, on another subject, I guess they're not doing a ToC this year? Ontario, See, my concern here is I just want process followed. If deletion review says merge redirect, delete, or relist, fine. Whatever. it irritates me that R Fiend is taking misusing his power to force this issue which has been through some odd 150+ comments in 2 AfDs. I worry that having the illegal redirect actually redirecting to valid info it will further his illegaly made case. The whole system just sucks (pardon my french). I'm really disappointed by the way the process has just broken down, and there is seemingly no one who can or will enforce it. WP:NOT a democracy. From Wikipedia:Consensus,

Precise numbers for "supermajority" are hard to establish, and Wikipedia is not a majoritarian democracy, so simple vote-counting should never be the key part of the interpretation of a debate. When supermajority voting is used, it should be seen as a process of 'testing' for consensus, rather than reaching consensus. The stated outcome is the best judgment of the facilitator, often an admin.

77th Academy Award Nominees

The difference between that list and the crash victims, IMO, are that the Oscar nominees are independently notable (being major films), and were notable for that reason before becoming nominated, whereas the crash victims were not independently notable. --Andy Saunders 16:51, 26 January 2006 (UTC)

The argument I was addressing was about it being a static list, not about notability. If he had been arguing about notabilty I would have used an article like Karlovy Vary Award Winners 2005 as my example, but he did not address the issue of notability whatsoever. Interviewee?

I recently started contacting media outlets across Canada, to try and arrange article/interviews about the upcoming 1,000,000th article on the English Wikipedia. The Guelph Mercury's managing editor has agreed to doing a piece, and wants someone from (now or before) Guelph.

You seem like the ideal person for them to interview. You have made lots of contributions to the project, you're currently active, obviously literate (something so many other Wikipedians lack), you're a member of Wikimedia Canada, and you don't try and push POV on the projects.

Welcome to Esperanza!

Welcome, OntarioQuizzer/Archive1, to Esperanza, the Wikipedia member association! As you might know, all the Esperanzians share one important goal: the success of this encyclopedia. Within that, we then attempt to strengthen the community bonds, and be the "approachable" side of the project. All of our ideals are held in the Charter, the governing document of the association.

Now that you are a member you should read the guide to what to do now or you may be interested in some of our programs. A quite important program is the StressUnit, which seeks to support editors who have encountered any stress from their Wikipedia events, and are seeking to leave the project. So far, Esperanza can be credited with the support and retention of several users. We will send you newsletters to keep you up to date. Also, we have a calendar of special events, member birthdays, and other holidays that you can add to and follow.

In addition to these projects, several more missions of Esperanza are in development, and are currently being created at Esperanza/Possibles.

I encourage you to take an active voice in the running of Esperanza. We have a small government system, headed by our Administrator general, Celestianpower, and guided by the Advisory Committee comprised of JoanneB, FireFox and Titoxd. The next set of elections are right now.

Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #3

Administrator Coaching The Administrator Coaching program is a program aimed at preparing Wikipedians for Adminship or helping them understand the intricacies of Wikipedia better. Recently, changes have been made to the requirements of coachees. Please review them before requesting this service. This would be something like the Welcoming Committee, but for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. Some might like suggestions about how to learn vandal patrol, or mentoring on taking an article to featured status, or guidance with a proposal they plan to make at the Village Pump, for example. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins. Stressbusters The Stressbusters are a subset of Esperanza aiming to investigate the causes of stress. New eyes on the situation are always welcome! The last AC meeting (full log) Posting logs of the Esperanza IRC channel are explicitly banned anywhere. Violation of this rule results in deletion and a ban from the channel. A disclaimer is going to be added to the Esperanza main page. We are humans and, as such, are imperfect. Various revisions have been made to the Code of Conduct. Please see them, as the proposal is ready to be ratified by the community and enacted. All members will members to have to re-confirm their membership after accepting the Code of Conduct. A short Esperanzial update

As you may have gathered, discussions have been raging for about a week on the Esperanza talk page as to the future direction of Esperanza. Some of these are still ongoing and warrant more input (such as the idea to scrap the members list altogether). However, some decisions have been made and the charter has hence been amended. See what happened. Basically, the whole leadership has had a reshuffle, so please review the new, improved charter.

As a result, we are electing 4 people this month. They will replace JoanneB and Pschemp and form a new tranche A, serving until December. Elections will begin on 2006-07-02 and last until 2006-07-09. If you wish to run for a Council position, add your name to the list before 2006-07-02. For more details, see Wikipedia:Esperanza/June 2006 elections.

August Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: To-Do List The Esperanza To-Do List is a place where you may list any request, big or small, for assistance. If you need help with archiving your usertalk, for example, all you need to do is list it here and somebody will help you out. Likewise, if you need help with some area of editing on Wikipedia, list it here! Again, any matter, trivial or not, can be placed on this page. However, all matters listed on this page must not be of an argumentative nature. You do not need to be a member of Esperanza (or this program) to place or fulfill requests on this page. If you don't have any requests, consider coming by and fulfilling a few! This program has not been very active, but has lots of potential! What's New? In order to help proposed programs become specific enough to make into full-fledged programs, the In development section of the proposals page has been created. Proposals that are promising, but need to be organized in more detail are listed here. Please take a look at what is there, and help the proposals turn into programs. To improve both the layout and text of the front page, in an attempt to clarify the image of Esperanza, the front page is going to have some redesigning take place. The last AC meeting (full log) In order to make sure all users who join Esperanza are welcomed, a list of volunteers who are willing to welcome new Esperanzians is at Wikipedia:Esperanza/Members#Esperanza_welcomers. Please add yourself if you are interested; we want to make sure all new Esperanza members are welcomed! The In development section of the proposals page has been created. Proposals page: Some proposals have been moved to the aforementioned "In development" section, some have been left as a proposal, and others have been archived. For those proposals that were a good idea but didn't necessarily constitute a program, General Esperanzial Actions has been created. Two small pieces of charter reform will be decided on in a straw poll at Wikipedia talk:Esperanza/Governance. One involves filling the position of any councillors who may leave, the other involves reforming the charter. Until cooperation with the Kindness Campaign is better defined, it remains as a proposed program. There is a page for discussing the front page redesign. Signed... Hello. You may or may not remember this, but some time ago you signed up for a Hangman Tournament hosted here on Wikipedia.

For some reason or another, you were placed on the "potential players" list.

The next tournament is about to start, and I was just wondering if you were still interested in participating. If you are, please go to the page (linked above) and bold your name in the sign-up list. This will confirm your registration, and move you to the next slot on the waiting list. If you are not interested any more, please feel free to remove your name from the list. If you haven't responded within 7 days, I will assume you are not interested, and remove you from the list. However, if you are too busy, go to the page anyway and renew your "busy" notice. This shows that you are still interested in the tournament, but still are to busy to participate at this time.

September Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: Barnstar Brigade Here in Wikipedia there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go unappreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go unnoticed. As Esperanzians we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. This is where the Barnstar Brigade comes in. The object of this program is to seek out the people which deserve a Barnstar, and help them feel appreciated. With your help, we can recognize more dedicated editors! What's New? September elections are upon us! Anyone wishing to be a part of the Advisory Council may list themselves as a candidate from 18 September until 24 September, with the voting taking place from 25 September to 30 September. Those who wish to help with the election staff should also list themselves! Appreciation Week, a program currently in development, now has its own subpage!
