Article Evaluation

[edit]

While I was reading the English Studies i felt like all the information was relevant to the topic. They talked about the history, the language, the studies of it and the careers that you could use your english studies in. I think this article was neutral because it doesn't really persuade you to go into english studies, it just tells you about it and the different parts of it. The next article I read was tertiary sources. I checked some of the links and a few of them don't work and another one, tried to redirect me to another site.

Bibliography for Birkenstocks

[edit]

Some information that I would like to add to this article is more about the founder because I found a different person than the one they had said on the page. I researched the founder that they had and I can't even find her. I also found a lot of article from the LA times dating back to 1992 that I could talk about how they became popular. I also found images from the collection that supposedly brought the Birkenstocks into the spotlight, also found certain celebrities that wear Birkenstocks. On the Birkenstocks website I found a small timeline about the creator and the company and I would also like to add a lot about the footbeds and the materials used to make the footbed since that is what they are known for. Excited to learn more about my favorite shoes and the history of the company.

1. http://www.vogue.com/fashion-shows/spring-2013-ready-to-wear/celine#details "And then there were the shoes: black fur-lined sandals in a Birkenstock vein, and that fur looked like mink with the models' glossy red toenails nestled in it." (Probably won't include because it's already mentioned but I would like to include some pictures of the sandals from the collection on the page)

2. http://www.birkenstock.com/us/us-about-footbed.html " Birkenstock invented the contoured footbed, introducing the concept in the 1930s for anatomically shaped insoles with incredible support." (I want to include this in on the page because they have a different date that the footbed was introduced) "1 - MORE TOE ROOM Allows toes to move naturally, which promotes better balance and correct foot alignment 2 - RAISED TOE BAR Encourages natural gripping motion of your feet 3 - CONTOURED FOOTBED Four arches ensure even weight distribution and proper posture 4 - DEEP HEEL CUP Cradles the heel and keeps natural cushioning right under the heel bone 5 - SHOCK ABSORBING SOLE Flexible, durable and lightweight 6 - JUTE FIBERS Two layers – one wicks away moisture, the other adds strength 7 - CORK FOOTBED Firm, resilient cork/latex base for maximum support 8 - FOOTBED LINER Soft suede keeps your feet comfortable and dry" (Could include this by showing how their footbed works and how it's so beneficial for you) The Blue Footbed makes it so you can enjoy the comfort and support of Birkenstocks in any closed toe shoe." 1. Thin and flexible for a high level of comfort and support. 2. Cradles the heel and keeps natural cushioning right under the heel bone. 3. Proper support for under the balls of the feet, the transversal arch and the lateral stability. 4. Precision-molded cups support the longitudinal arch and guide the foot through its natural rolling motion." (Shows how the Blue Footbed is very similar to the original Birkenstock shoes) "1966 Birkenstock introduced in the US market"

3. http://www.germany.travel/en/ms/german-originality/heritage/famous-people/entrepreneurs/johan-adam-birkenstock.html "the Birkenstock company has been a family company for 230 years now." (Want to include this so people know that this is a family run company) "during World War II, when the insoles served as orthopedic support for people injured during the war." DONE (World War 2 was from 1939-1945)

4. https://fnasf.wordpress.com/2010/04/07/talk-with-founder-and-former-ceo-of-birkenstock-margot-fraser/ "In the 70s when she began distribution, there was a huge cultural revolution going on in the world and much of it was happening locally in San Francisco. The kids didn’t want to wear what their parents were wearing, they wanted to rebel and be radical. So the Birkenstock hit the market and was totally different than anything they had seen before and the hippie generation swallowed them up." DONE (The timing was important for her to sell the shoes in the US)

7. https://www.birkenstock-group.com/de/en/company/history/ "In 1925 he buys a factory in Friedberg, Hesse, with extensive grounds." DONE (Could include this about how they started expanding) "In 1963 Karl Birkenstock develops his own sandal and launches the Madrid" DONE (First type of sandal launched that becomes very popular, it was an icon) "Birkenstock starts using eco-friendly adhesive back in 1988, making it one of the first shoe manufacturers in the world to use water-soluble and solvent-free adhesive almost exclusively in its production process." (Shows that the company is eco-friendly and is interested in protecting the environment, also shows how they are different from other companies) "In 1991 a variety of licensed trademarks, such as Papillae and Betula, are established over the following years" (Figure out what this actually means, I think I could include it in their ways of business or something like that) "In 2013 Birkenstock becomes a corporation. The traditionL company successfully makes the transition from a loose network of 38 separate companies to a group with three business units. The group is led by an executive team, which for the first time is not composed of family members - an unprecedented event in the company's almost 240-year history. Markus Bensberg and Oliver Reichert are in charge of the activities of the Birkenstock Group" (Need to paraphrase this but this is defiantly very important information that i need to include on the page, this was a huge change for the small family run business)

8. https://www.bloomberg.com/research/stocks/private/people.asp?privcapId=45759263 Alex Birkenstock - Chief Executive Officer Christian Birkenstock - Managing Director Tim Steffens - Managing Director (Important people in the company)

STARTING ARTICLE

In 1896 after Konrad Birkenstock created the flexible footbed he opened two shoes stores in Frankfurt, Germany where he continued to make and sell the insoles. DONE After World War II (1939-1945) the Birkenstock sandal was popular among returning soldiers because of the orthopedic support. DONE (added citation)  In 1925 Konrad Birkenstock starts expanding the company by buying a large factory in Friedberg, Hesse. DONE Starting in 1963 and continuing into 1964 Karl Birkenstock releases his first athletic sandal with a flexible footbed called, Madrid. It soon became an icon especially among gymnasts. DONE 1996 Birkenstocks made their way into the United States. DONE  In 1966 Birkenstocks were introduced in the United States, as well as elsewhere. American, Margot Fraser "discovered" Birkenstock sandals while visiting a spa in Germany. DONE When Margot Fraser first started distributing them in San Fransico, California, she wasn't having very much luck. Later on in the 70's a cultural revolution was taking off and so was her business. DONE The timing was important because the "hippie" kids wanted to be different from their parents and radical and these shoes were just the beginning for them. DONE  such as the Ramses and the Arizona (added links) DONE Some celebrities that you'll see rocking Birkenstocks are Naomi Watts, Leighton Meester, Juliane Moore, Jessica Alba, Drew Barrymore, Miranda Kerr, Heidi Klum, Cara Delevingne, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Olsen, Selma Blair, Anne Hathaway, and Kate Hudson. (Added links with a picture to all celebrities wearing them) DONE As of 2017, some important executives of the Birkenstock Orthopädie GmbH & Co. KG include Alex Birkenstock as the Chief Executive Officer, Christian Birkenstock as the Managing Director, and Tim Steffens as the Managing Director. DONE The footbed of the Birkenstock shoe was created in the 1930's and is very unique, it has four different layers that complete the shoes. The first layer of the shoe is the shock absorbent sole, this is flexible, durable, and lightweight. Followed by the jute fibers which are two layers that wick away moisture and adds strength. The next layer is firm corked footbed which has a resilient cork/latex base for maximum support. The last layer is the footbed line which is a soft suede that keeps your feet comfortable and dry. The company also makes something called the blue footbed which allows you to get the support of the Birkenstock in any closed toe shoe. DONE

Article Critique

[edit]

In the article[1]about Margot Fraser it states that she was the founder of Birkenstock, but some other sources do not support this claim. In point 7 you have a link about the history about the company[2], but there is no claim that there was a company that was purchased in Hesse. Other than that, your articles are neutral and seem to be on a good start. For your "starting article" make sure the dates are chronological; you have a source from 1996 before 1966. Switch the two so your article will have a better flow. Alanna.davis (talk) 17:02, 27 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
