Sex offenders and murderers
[edit]Recitivism, for one. Recitivism is not related to the heinousness of the crime, but rather what motivates the crime. People who sexually offend against children have high rates of recitivism, with the theory being that they are pedophiles (a mental illness) and therefore they have an deep-seated (and some lament, incurable) impulse to do sexual things to children. Murderers (in most cases) are not motivated by a deep psychological desire to kill people, but a myriad of other motives like greed, hatred, or anger. In no way am I endorsing or criticizing this reasoning, I am simply stating what the reasoning is for American criminal procedures.Legitimus (talk) 23:58, 29 November 2010 (UTC)
