Ocalafla,

Thanks for your contributions to the clean-up of the Edward H. Brooks entry. As the principal author of that page, I've enjoyed seeing the work others have contributed in enhancing it. Specifically regarding your addition of the cn tags, much of the content comes from the personal estate and library of General Brooks, and therefore cannot be formally cited to published material.

Ocalafla,

As principal author of the Wikipedia History of the 2nd Infantry Regiment and also historian of the 2nf Infantry I appreciate any changes that you may think are warranted by I do believe that quite a few are incorrect. First, it is a 2nd Infantry Regiment history and therefore anything in the history that reads the Regiment refers directly to the 2nd Infantry Regiment and thus the R should be capitalized. This goes for the battalion also when it is used in context to a specific battalion.

Next, Distinctive Unit Insignia is a 3 word name and therefore all three words should be capitalized. The same should hold true for Coat of Arms.

The way that the section on the Distinctive Unit Insignia and Coat of Arms was written is the way the Institute of Heraldry presented it but I guess you feel that your way is better.

It was Indian outrages not Indians.

The Regiment (-) means that not the entire regiment was present, it is not a mistake. It was/is a common reference to not an entire unit begin involved.

In this instance Motorized is capitalized because it is part of a name.

If after you review what I have presented and see that I am correct I ask that you correct what you have changed.

Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2INFMAN (talkcontribs) 18:53, 22 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Response at 2nd Infantry Regiment article talk page.Ocalafla (talk) 12:19, 26 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Ocalafla:

I'm positive about the non-numbering of divisional aviation brigades outside of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), which has two (101st and 159th). I've discussed this on numerous occasions with Ned Bedessem, the Aviation historian and force structure expert at the US Army Center of Military History (CMH), Fort McNair, Washington, DC. It is an ongoing problem he faces - people erroneously write up what they think their unit should be called, or what they would like to call it, rather than what it really is. Because bad information is so widespread, you'll find many references to that bad information throughout the web and on official websites, where they should know better. If you wish, I can put you in contact with Ned and he can confirm that, other than in the 101st, divisional aviation brigades aren't numbered.

A similar situation existed in the Army prior to the 2005 reorganization of divisions into the "modular" structure. A division's field artillery battalions were grouped under what was known as "Division Artillery," which did not have a number, and fortunately people didn't try to assign numbers to it.

A problem with assigning the same number as the division is that there would be duplicates. During the Vietnam War there was very large (27,000-man) separate brigade with the designation of 1st Aviation Brigade. In the post-war years the designation was assigned to Fort Rucker, AL, as a schoolhouse unit. But if a division's aviation brigade carried the same number as the division, what would the brigades be numbered in these units?

1st Infantry Division 1st Armored Division 1st Cavalry Division

Perhaps it was with this in mind that the Army simply went with Combat Aviation Brigade, XXth Division. As for Ned, he just smiles and shakes his head, knowing that people have done this sort of thing for years and will continue to do so, no matter what guidance the CMH puts out.

Recent VMi Edits

[edit]

Just writing to let you know I appreciate your edits--seems like you, at least, are somewhat even-keeled. Bob80 is a different story. Just so you know--VMI is, in fact, the only school in the US to have ever had its entire student body fight as a unit in actual combat. I will contact a historian on Monday and refer him to the ridiculous games that Bob80 and other citadel grads are playing at so he can clear the air. Should be interesting. Thanks, 70.95.139.83 (talk) 07:44, 21 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Having gone to neither school, I've got no dog in the fight. I had a few distant ancestors go to The Citadel, but I'm proud to have served with both Citadel and VMI grads and have been impressed with both. Both great schools with proud traditions. Both schools speak with deserved pride about their accomplishments. I just am hopeful these accomplishments are accompanied by references to reliable sources! 65th Infantry

[edit]

Ocalafla, Thank for the concerns which you posted on the "talk page" of the [[65th Infantry Regiment (United States) artricle. I'm sorry, Ocalafla I guess our age is catching up to both of us.

!. Col. Harris quote: {http://www.valerosos.com/PreludetoInchon.html Valorosos - Prelude to Ichon] - Somewhere at the end of the fourth paragraph.

2. Col. Antulio Segarra - [http://www.valerosos.com/CommandsGVillahermosa.html Valerosos Commands} - Beginning of the fourth paragraph.

3. Modesto Cartagena - Specail anouncements; [ http://www.borinqueneers.com/node/245 Borinqueneers]; Alcalde de Cayey lamenta fallecimiento del soldado Puertorriqueño más condecorado en la historia de EE.UU..

Once again, I'm really sorry, I should have gotten the sources straight, but unexpected heath problems in the family had me doing thing in a rush. Will you be kind enough to fix the sources for me? If you can't for some reason let me know and I'll do it. Tony the Marine (talk) 02:39, 8 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

FYI, Bob hasn't yet breached the WP:3RR rule yet (since it requires more than 3 reverts), but he's getting there quickly. Just wanted to let you know. Buffs (talk) 02:06, 16 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Concerning your edits on the 2nd Infantry Regiment site isn't Distintive Unit Insignis and Coat of Arms in the context used proper names on to items and there capatilized? If they were used in a sentence such as, the coat of arms is part of heraldry, it wouldn't be capatilized. Your wat is like saying that John James Jones only the J in John is capitalized.

Also you need to look at your edit concerning the Ramrod, you left out a "m" in museum.Lansmun (talk) 17:18, 23 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

2nd Infantry Regiment

[edit]

In the Vietnam section you felt it necessary to edit what the 1st Infantry Division stated in a press release, why would that be, you don't like their grammar? It is what the statement said word for word.GUNNERGRZ (talk) 13:46, 30 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

There is no such thing as SHARING battle honors. What regiments?GUNNERGRZ (talk) 15:36, 5 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You just can’t get past this can you? I recommend that you read the Infantry section of this link very closely, nowhere does is state that the honors are inherited. If you have any further questions concerning this you should address them in the talk section for this site. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Active_Regular_Army_units_with_campaign_credit_for_the_War_of_1812

Why exactly did you delete the sentence about the Miami Campaign being the oldest streamer? Do you know of one that is older? Lastly, what’s the difference between original or old? There has been two 2nd Infantry Regiments, the original one and the present one. GUNNERGRZ (talk) 00:53, 7 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Your latest edit to the 2nd Infantry Regiment

[edit]

What exactly does your latest edit, "with other regiments" have to do with the opening statement concerning the 2nd Infantry as a whole? It is not talking about any other regiment besides the 2nd Infantry Regiment and who exactly are the "other" regiments. Are you referring to the 1st Infantry Regiment? The two honors the regiment has from the old regiment are Miami, which the first 3 regiments then and now earned and Alabama 1815 which only the 2nd Infantry Regiment was involved in. Distinctive Unit Insignia Page

[edit]

Howdy! Before we get into an edit war, I think we can discuss the edits to the section titles. The Style manual does not seem to differentiate between sentence case & proper nouns. The unit designations for each section are proper nouns in that context. In the paragraph text they are not- the unit is a "Battlefield Surveillance Brigade" but it conducts battlefield surveillance; ditto "Information Operations" etc... I'd appreciate help cleaning up areas where the terms are not correct for proper nouns, but in quotes form the regulation and the section headers I believe I am correct. What are your thoughts? Mikeofv (talk) 17:45, 18 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for reaching out! After your reversion, the changes I made left intact initial capitals where the type of unit was the same as the name of a US Army branch, e.g. "Field Artillery". While I think the way it was previously (sentence case) was more correct because the article was listing general field artillery units as opposed to the Field Artillery Branch. While I thought my approach was more correct, I see arguments both ways and left those edits intact as an attempt at compromise. However, with regard to "battlefield surveillance brigade" there is no entity for which that is a proper noun; there is no "battlefield surveillance branch" or "information operation branch"; it is just a type of unit. It is, thus, a common noun like "airborne brigade" or "rifle platoon", etc. Hope this helps. Ocalafla (talk) 00:24, 19 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
