Oak Bay on Wikipedia

[edit]

On Jun 20, 2020 an within the section on Oak Bay History, the text was changed to include the phrase "Oak Bay is the unceded territory of the Coast Salish people of the Songhees First Nation."

As I understand it, Between 1850 and 1854 there were 14 land purchases on Vancouver Island that are now known as the Douglas Treaties. The current boundaries of Oak Bay lie within the boundaries of these treaties. As such, the term "unceded" is incorrect and should be changed to "Historical"
