Hahaha!

[edit]

Whew! You had me scared for a little bit there. I had just reverted vandalism on my talk page and user page, when you came along and reverted my talk page back to the vandalised version. I felt awfully surrounded. All's well that ends well. Have a good day!--MrFish 12:34, 5 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Cheers MrFish. I'm still a bit of a noob at this, as you can tell! OAP boba 13:59, 5 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

normality

[edit]

Hi, I have been doing some editing of the concentration page and saw your question on normality. Normality is a pretty awkward unit because it depends on the kind of chemistry the species is doing. For example a 1 molar sulfuric acid provides 2 moles of H+ per liter if it is used in an acid base reaction. This means that 1 molar equals 2 normal in this case. However, if the same solution acts as an oxidizer its normality depends on the number of electrons each sulfuric molecule is taking up in the particular reaction it undergoes. If it goes from 6+ to 4+ (to sulfite) 1M would equal 2N but if it goes all the way to sulfide (2-) it would be 8N!.

This implies that if you have more than one reaction going on the normality is not really definable.

Obviously normality has been a source of confusion for a long time. May it perish.

Thanks for this reply - that's most helpful. I completely agree with you: "Obviously normality has been a source of confusion for a long time. May it perish."
