Image galleries
[edit]Hi,
Please read WP:IG. Merely adding extra images of cultivars of Schlumbergera isn't considered a good reason – there's already an image showing the range of variation in cultivars. And you certainly can't keep adding more images of different cultivars. One solution might be to start a new article, "List of Schlumbergera cultivars". This could contain a table of names and images. See, as a possible example, List of Canna cultivars, although I wouldn't lay it out quite that way.

Well, thank you for the explanation, and the useful idea for an alternative.

- @Nzfauna: I think such an article would be useful, but the problem is to get copyright free images with reliable cultivar names attached. Most Schlumbergera plants sold in Europe don't seem to have any names with them, and guessing the name from the appearance (which people do) isn't very reliable, especially since the precise colour varies so much with the temperature at which they are grown. Copyright issues
[edit]Hi, Rhodochiton atrosanguineus does need a short Cultivation section, but I had to remove the one you added; whole chunks of text are identical to the RHS source. You must not copy and past into Wikipedia, unless actually quoted, unless from sources free of copyright, which the RHS site is not. Everything else must be re-written. (It's a good idea also to read WP:NOTHOW. Cultivation sections are tricky to write because instructions are not allowed.) By all means paraphrase the RHS guidance, but don't copy. Peter coxhead (talk) 08:45, 26 July 2014 (UTC)
Will do, thanks Peter. I thought stating where it came from would be sufficient, but oh well. Nzfauna (talk) 08:20, 26 July 2014 (UTC)
- Well, in some parts of the world "fair use" might apply as long as acknowledged, but Wikipedia is very strict. The key bit of WP:FAQ/Copyright is probably this: "Facts cannot be copyrighted. It is legal to read an encyclopedia article or other work, reformulate the concepts in your own words, and submit it to Wikipedia. But be careful not to closely paraphrase; the structure, presentation, and phrasing of the information should be your own original creation." Now there is an issue, which you've come across already I think, about the structure of descriptions of plants: there's a natural order, which everyone basically follows. So I've taken the view that if you can show that two separate sources use the same ordering, it's a "standard order" and I do the same. But the "presentation and phrasing" has to be different.
- The way you've now reworded it is the right approach. Instead of "Propagate by seeds sown in spring" you say "Propagation is by seeds sown in spring" or "The recommended method of propagation is by seeds sown in spring" or "The RHS recommends propagating by seeds sown in spring". It's a bit tedious! Peter coxhead (talk) 08:45, 26 July 2014 (UTC)
- Remember the template (Wikipedia:WikiProject_Plants/Template) for the order of sections! Peter coxhead (talk) 08:45, 26 July 2014 (UTC)
