Resident Evil Death Island
[edit]Those were just some examples of the mixed reception. RedStar2002 (talk) 19:09, 27 September 2024 (UTC)
It wasn't positive or negative, just mixed. — Preceding unsigned comment added by RedStar2002 (talk • contribs) 19:10, 27 September 2024 (UTC)
- You listed a random YouTuber's Jill Valentine "analysis" video, another random YT review of the film, random RT user comments, and random Reddit users commenting on the film. None of these are reliable and notable. The sources must be professional and reliable (see MOS:FILMAUDIENCE), and they must clearly mention the information you are adding (for example, sources XYZ explicitly state "The film received mixed reviews from critics"). ภץאคгöร 19:21, 27 September 2024 (UTC)

Question about removing french filmmaker
[edit]Hello, I noticed that the mention of Coralie Fargeat being a French filmmaker was removed from the page. I think this detail is important, especially for The Substance, as it provides context for her work and highlights her unique perspective, particularly for international readers. I’d like to understand the reasoning behind this change. Can you explain? Portersonnom (talk) 21:15, 9 November 2024 (UTC)
- Hi, how does mentioning a person's nationality bring that person's "unique perspective" to a film article or highlight it? If you can explain this in a reasonable way, we may add it. Otherwise you should consider reading MOS:LEAD. ภץאคгöร 21:31, 9 November 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you for your response. Mentioning Coralie Fargeat as a French filmmaker is important because it provides context for The Substance. The film was directed and produced by a French team but this is not clearly stated in the article. Fargeat has discussed in interviews (including at the Cannes Film Festival) how her French background and perspective shape her work. Her French gaze influences the way she approaches storytelling even in a film made in English.
- Plus, since the English article often serves as the main source for other language versions, adding this detail would help maintain consistency across versions and ensure readers understand the cultural context behind the movie. I hope this clarifies why I believe it’s important to mention her nationality. Thanks :) Portersonnom (talk) 21:36, 9 November 2024 (UTC)
- You haven't provided a valid reason to include it. Any person's background and perspective can and will shape their work, and it's certainly not something that can be expressed by just stating the person's nationality. Mentioning a person's nationality with a word in the lead provides no (cultural) context or "unique perspective" for the film article, and we are not following "consistency across versions" because the versions are different. The lead already states that the film is an international co-production. If you really want to add context and/or if you think that there is missing information in the article, you can do it in a much better way than just mentioning what the nationality of a person is, for example by adding sourced information in the Production section. ภץאคгöร 22:30, 9 November 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you again for your response. However I respectfully disagree with your reasoning :) Simply stating that a filmmaker’s background influences their work, without acknowledging the importance of their nationality, misses a key point. Removing Coralie Fargeat’s nationality from the article leaves out an important part of the film’s context.
- While I understand the mention of the international co-production, this mainly covers the financial and organizational aspects of the film, not the creative influence of the director. Fargeat, as a French filmmaker, brings a distinct vision to her work. It’s important to mention her French background early in the article so readers can better understand the film.
- Additionally, the film was made in France, which makes Fargeat’s French background even more relevant.
- I’m not sure if you speak French (vous parlez français?) but Fargeat often talks about the influence of both American and French cinema on her. She is also very critical of American and Hollywood culture, particularly how it views women’s bodies. By leaving out her French background in the article, it gives the misleading impression that the film is American.
- This feels like an example of invisibilizing foreign contributions to American culture, which is problematic. That’s why I believe it’s important to mention Fargeat’s French background at the beginning of the article.
- I can add more context later if you’d like, but we both know that many readers don’t always check the context section of the article to understand the background of a film.
- Could you explain your reasoning in more detail and provide clear, objective arguments for why the nationality of the filmmaker shouldn’t be included? Portersonnom (talk) 23:36, 9 November 2024 (UTC)
- So by saying "Fargeat is French", you expect people who don't read the context section to immediately learn how being French influences her work, how she is critical of American and Hollywood culture and how it's not an American film? This is absurd. Plus we do not state "a filmmaker’s background influences their work" here because this is a film article about a specific film, not a biography of a living person. Production section already contains similar info regarding the film, and this cannot be summarized by simply stating that the director is French :D. ภץאคгöร 11:37, 10 November 2024 (UTC)
