Chinatown theaters
[edit]Say, I'm glad you added a section to Chinatown, Manhattan about the Chinese theaters that used to be in the neighborhood. However, I'm a little concerned about the sourcing. I can find a link for the Times article that is directly from the Times site, as we can't used the site that holds a copy for copyright reasons, but unfortunately the other sources, esp. the blog, probably can't be used. I'll see if I can find more articles. Thanks, ScottyBerg (talk) 23:19, 23 April 2011 (UTC)
Thank you very much for commenting on me adding the facts about past Chinatown theaters. Just to clarify, so the knickerbockervillage wouldn't be a good source to use since it is a blog? Can you clarify with me if I am to add info and have the references, which type of references are okay to use and not okay to use. So does this mean newspaper articles can't be used as well? I also added the info about the Sun Sing and Pagoda Theaters on East Broadway (Manhattan) as well. Please let me know.
Thanks

- We can definitely use newspaper articles, but we can't link to websites that copy them without permission for copyright reasons. See more on my talk page. Don't worry, we can build a good section using appropriate sources. It's a good idea that you added that. ScottyBerg (talk) 21:44, 26 April 2011 (UTC)
Thank You very much. Let me know when you are able to have more ideas on how to develop the section. so what about books sources that can easily be found on google.com? can those be used?
nyc88 (talk) 17:50, 26 April 2011 (UTC)
- Books? Absolutely. A good source for sources that are acceptable is WP:RS. Also WP:V. I'm a little snowed under at present but when I have a chance I'll take a look myself. Can you access the NY Times archive? Also Google News archives is very good. ScottyBerg (talk) 23:47, 26 April 2011 (UTC)
Thanks Scottyberg. I also added sources from books found on google as well. I hope they can be used. NY Times Archive? I am not sure how to access that.
nyc88 (talk) 20:00, 27 April 2011 (UTC)
- I may be able to access the Times archive myself, though I've been a bit tied up lately. By the way, note that I added some text from the Doyers Street article and an image too. ScottyBerg (talk) 00:25, 28 April 2011 (UTC)
Cool. It looks wonderful. May I ask where you found this picture? Also is it possible to add the other pics of the other theaters that existed onto the Chinatown, Manhattan and East Broadway (Manhattan) articles because they do exist on the net and they are in some of the references I provided, even the Pagoda, Sun Sing and Music Palace theaters or are there copyright issues? Once again, thank you for helping me develop this section and giving me some tips.
nyc88 (talk) 17:15, 28 April 2011 (UTC)
- I found it through Google images. But there are plenty of sources not on Google, such as the Library of Congress and the NY Public Library Flickr feed. There's a ton of good, old photos of Chinatown available through those sources. ScottyBerg (talk) 23:10, 9 May 2011 (UTC)
- Another thing you may want to do is to search Google Books. They have a ton of old books and periodicals online from before 1923, making them in the public domain, and there is a lot on Chinatown. Some of it is so racist it is funny! But there is so much that I'm thinking of doing a separate article for the Chinese Theater on Doyers. ScottyBerg (talk) 23:41, 9 May 2011 (UTC)
NYC Chinatown History
[edit]Thanks for the tips. I will keep it in mind. I was wondering if it is okay to ask you this. At what age range are you? I was just curious because I thought if you have been around for a long time, I thought you might know a lot about NYC's Chinatown past and I can ask you about it. I was born in the late 80s and used to be a Manhattan Chinatown resident, so I only know so much from during the 90s till now. nyc88 (talk) 18:25, 10 May 2011 (UTC)
- Just saw your note. A lady never reveals her age! Though I'm not a lady. I was born a bit earlier than you.
- Say, I just wanted to compliment you on the detail and context you're adding to the Chinatown article. One suggestion I would make is that you look into properly formatting the references, when you have the time. At the top of the page in edit format there is a button for "adding citation" on the left. Click on that and it should bring a drop-down menu that you can utilize to add the name of the source, etc. etc. It took me a while to discover these things exist and it's really helpful. ScottyBerg (talk) 16:43, 24 May 2011 (UTC)
- I know you've been around for a little while, but I've added a welcome template to the top of this page with useful links. Have fun! ScottyBerg (talk) 16:46, 24 May 2011 (UTC)
Thanks. But I can't seem to find the link that says adding citation or edit format. I am not quite sure what should be the proper ways in formatting references. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citing_sources was this link what you were talking about? I just wanted to make sure.
nyc88 (talk) 18:10, 25 May 2011 (UTC)
- Well actually no, I was thinking of a button that should be on the toolbar when you are in "edit" mode. At the far left is an "add citation" button. Click on that and it should give you a drop down menu for web, news, etc., and click on that and you should get a form to fill out. Why not try it and see if it works. ScottyBerg (talk) 23:54, 25 May 2011 (UTC)
- FYI, I'm referring to the button on the far left here, which you should see when you click on "edit":
I'd suggest checking out WP:RefToolbar 1.0 when you have a spare moment, as it describes what I'm talking about. ScottyBerg (talk) 00:05, 26 May 2011 (UTC)
Thanks. I will look into it.
nyc88 (talk) 15:01, 26 May 2011 (UTC)
- It's not a big deal. Main thing is to continue to add good sourced content, as you've been doing. ScottyBerg (talk) 19:06, 26 May 2011 (UTC)
I like what you've added on the Occupy Wall Street protests affecting Chinatown, but I was wondering if you could try to word it in a more neutral fashion? I'd try myself but you seem more familiar with the subject matter. ScottyBerg (talk) 04:02, 27 October 2011 (UTC)
Thanks Scottyberg for the tip. I will change the wording around to make it sound more neutral. (nyc88) 04:09, 29 October 2011 (UTC)
Disambiguation link notification
[edit]Hi. When you recently edited Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Bay Parkway (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Hello DPL bot.
I added the link next to the Chinese translation for Bay Parkway because I wanted to add the Chinese translation for Bay Parkway. However, there are no actual sources to back it up. I also used google translate to see the Chinese translation for Bay Parkway, however when I found the Chinese translated article of NYC's Chinatowns [[1]], which shows the Chinese translation for Bay Parkway all the way at the bottom, it does not match what I found via google translate. I tried to set this Chinese translation for Bay Parkway to link it as 有海湾公园道, which did not go through as you will see it. That is why I set up this link "[[2]]" next to it to show some evidence of the Chinese translation for Bay Parkway. However, realizing there is no reliable source at this time to back up or clarify completely of the Chinese translation for Bay Parkway, I took it off.
I apologize for creating the disambiguation page and next time I will know not to use disambiguation pages that can confuse readers.
Please feel free to let me know of any editing concerns.

I apologize for misinterpreting your statement about the Disambiguation link notification of Bay Parkway
[edit]Hello DPL bot
I just realized what you meant. I apologize for misinterpreting what you wrote to me. I meant to link Bay Parkway to the actual Brooklyn's Bay Parkway wikipedia article. I did not realize there was a Disambiguation page for Bay Parkway until just now. However, regarding about the Chinese translations for Bay Parkway, I am still keeping it off because of no or unclear sources.
I really apologize for the misunderstanding and misinterpretation. Please always feel free and welcomed to let me know about any editing concerns.

- Thanks much for your kind messages here and on DPL bot's page. No worries about the disambiguation links; you don't have to fix them if you don't want to, and I certainly don't want you to feel bad about them! The bot is only to help you in your editing, nothing more. All the same, your sincere desire to do good work is great to see; it's one of the things I love most about Wikipedia.
