Daniel-Johnson Dam

Great minds... I was about to make the same proposal to you! I'm currently re-reading the Manic-5 page in French and I plan to bring some content from it in the Daniel-Johnson Dam page as early as today. Let's get the ball rolling! Bouchecl (talk) 14:10, 18 August 2010 (UTC)

I'm just getting started! I decided to begin with context and cultural significance, since I'm quite familiar with the political and cultural ramifications of the project on Quebec society. Feel free to work on the other (placeholder) sections while I'm finishing these two. Bouchecl (talk) 21:53, 18 August 2010 (UTC)
Do you have a more precise reference for the 1971 book? I may be able to get a copy from one of the libraries here in Quebec City. In the meantime, I do have a 1967, 52-page bilingual booklet, in DejaVu format. Would you be interested? I could put it on Scribd or some other file-sharing site... Bouchecl (talk) 03:31, 19 August 2010 (UTC)
You're in luck tonight. I've just uploaded it on a personal web space I seldom use. Here's the link (4.7 MB file). You can quote the book harvard style (I'll provide a formatted reference in the Further reading section. Use Paradis (1967)). You'll need a Djvu reader to read the file. Bouchecl (talk) 03:57, 19 August 2010 (UTC)
Good news. I found the Rethi-Jacobus book at a couple of places locally, both the earlier (1968) french edition and the 1971 english one. I'll see what I can do as far as getting a copy in my hands within 24-48 hours. Bouchecl (talk) 04:35, 19 August 2010 (UTC)
You did really good! So much so that I may have to translate the article back into French! The DYK facts are fine, except for ALT1. Daniel Johnson, Sr. died early in the morning of the dedication ceremony. I've added a few pictures (including one showing small cracks on the central arch) and added some details on the reservoir and René-Levasseur Island. Last point: should we try to get the article to GA-level? What's missing? Bouchecl (talk) 21:02, 19 August 2010 (UTC)
I have a couple ideas. I'll throw them in a todo section of the Talk page. Bouchecl (talk) 23:12, 19 August 2010 (UTC)

WP:Dams

Hi, I asked for help or advice some time ago at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Council#Questions and request for help with a new WikiProject, WP:Dams. That seemed like the appropriate place to ask, but there's been no reply. Real life has been too hectic for me to try to figure anything technical out. Given the lack of reply at WikiProject Council, maybe it would make sense to ask instead at the general Help Desk. I'm not exactly sure.. Pfly (talk) 17:53, 20 August 2010 (UTC)

Ah ha, great! Thanks for working all that out. I might be at fault for the project being listed under "Dam" at toolserver.org. Following a guideline somewhere, I registered the project there. I don't remember now exactly what I did, but I was following the general coding style being used by Wikipedia:WikiProject Rivers, which uses "Rivers" in its name here but "River" on toolserver.org and in some of the category template code.
I'll make some time to poke at the project's pages some more. Also, I've recently noticed there are quite a few significant dams in South America that have no Wikipedia pages at all. There's one on the Río Negro (Uruguay) that is supposedly the largest in South America (although I thought Itaipu Dam would be the largest). There's at least 5 dams on the Paranapanema River, 5 on the Tietê River, 7 on the Grande River, and 4 on the Paranaíba River, none of which seem to have pages. Also, I think there are 4 dams on the Paraná River, but only Itaipu and Yacyretá Dam seem to have pages. A fair number of these are shown on the Spanish map File:Bacia tiete parana.png. Something to look into, although at this point I'm not even sure how, or even if, the Spanish names should be rendered into English forms. Anyway, thanks again for troubleshooting and fixing things! I got overwhelmed. Pfly (talk) 05:23, 21 August 2010 (UTC)
Oh, while writing just now I forgot the template, so I just tried it out, adding hydroelectric=yes to the Diablo Dam page, and removing the WikiProject Energy template. Looks fine to me. The only thing I can think of is that removing the Energy project template means the pages won't be included in that project's assessments, summary statistics, etc. I just took a quick look at the project's pages by "importance", and it looked like individual dams are not very important (eg, Aswan Dam is rated "low" importance, while "high" importance pages seem mostly general topics, like Hydroelectricity). I have no problem with multiple project templates being used on a given page, but the energy project is large in scope and probably not much concerned with pages on specific dams--other than the largest and most famous. Hmm, I suppose we could always just ask what would be best over at the project's talk page. Pfly (talk) 05:59, 21 August 2010 (UTC)
Oh, and one other thing. The template has an "attention=" parameter. Do you know what that would be used for? I assume one would add "attention=yes" for pages that "need attention". Would they be listed someplace, I wonder. Pfly (talk) 06:03, 21 August 2010 (UTC)
If it falls under both projects, then it should get both tags. What do you think? Makes sense to me. I removed the energy tag from Diablo Dam's page, because it seemed like what Rehman was wanting when he asked for the hydroelectric parameter. Afterwards, I realized the wholesale removal of tags might not be the best idea. I purposefully picked a rather insignificant dam so it wouldn't really matter one way or the other. But now that I think about it, I'd feel hesitant to remove project tags without at least knowing a bit more what energy project people thought about it. Pfly (talk) 07:01, 21 August 2010 (UTC)

Nasiriyah Drainage Pump Station

Hi, could you take a look at T:TDYK#Nasiriyah Drainage Pump Station? I've verified it but suggested a slightly different hook. Thanks Smartse (talk) 16:59, 24 August 2010 (UTC)

Going for a triple double DYK nom

Thank you for your review of my DYK nom, but I just turned it into a triple double-nom Natalee Holloway (film), Loving Natalee: A Mother's Testament of Hope and Faith, Beth Holloway with an interesting twist about the suspect. Even if the other new articles don't pass muster, I still think it would be a much more interesting alt hook. KimChee (talk) 21:23, 24 August 2010 (UTC)

Beth Holloway consists of matter mostly spun off from Natalee Holloway; spun off articles are not eligible.--Wehwalt (talk) 23:53, 24 August 2010 (UTC)

Still a couple of weeks before we can move forward on the damn dam. The blurb and point calculation are here just so you know.--Wehwalt (talk) 08:40, 25 August 2010 (UTC)
Thanks, I added a half of a sentence into the blurb about flood control and irrigation. I tried to put it in an area where it would be more interesting instead of the beginning which is most interesting. It would be interesting to say something like "tame the Colorado". Flooding was bad until that dam was built. Also, if you get a chance, glance at Daniel-Johnson Dam. Another editor and myself just expanded it and I think it would make a great FAC. I have some more info/references to add to it but I think it is broad enough. --NortyNort (Holla) 09:32, 25 August 2010 (UTC)
I glanced at it, it might do but certainly needs work, I will leave comments on its talk page when I can.--Wehwalt (talk) 10:09, 25 August 2010 (UTC)

Dniester Pumped Storage Power Station

Hi NortyNort. Have a question; this website explains "2,268 MW in generating mode, and 2,947 MW in pumping mode". What does it mean? And thanks for fixing the current values, I didn't understand that it was fully complete. ;) Rehman(+) 08:36, 1 September 2010 (UTC)

Hmm, well it doesn't produce energy in pumping mode, so that has to be the energy expended while pumping water back. PSPs usually use about 20-25% above what they produce to pump. No problem, I am getting ready to fix the top five and was checking sources. One of the pumped-storage sources wasn't too good. It listed the Mt. Hope PSP which never even started.--NortyNort (Holla) 09:00, 1 September 2010 (UTC)

Can you take a look at Articles created/expanded on August 23 to see if this above article might qualify for a DYK. Thanks.--Doug Coldwell talk 17:22, 2 September 2010 (UTC)

TFA and all that

While we could technically nominate Hoover Dam now, I think it would cause hard feelings to remove an article which is being asked to run over two weeks before the 30th. Sometime in the next week, Raul will schedule and possibly as many as three slots will open up at TFA/R. Suggest nominating then.--Wehwalt (talk) 17:06, 3 September 2010 (UTC)

Ok, with the 5 day max and our points, I see we would bump that article out. Well, I am ready to rock and roll and am excited to get the article up there. I still monitor the request page, so if I see one slot open, I can just put our blurb in. I was wondering, for every day that an article is not requested, does Raul just picks an FA?--NortyNort (Holla) 02:03, 4 September 2010 (UTC)
Yes, correct, that is what he does. He does not have to take a recommendation from TFA/R but most of the time he does and I think people will love this. You might want to watchlist the TFA for September 11, 2010 and see when Raul modifies it. If all the slots get filled before you get to it, then I would suggest bumping, especially if the "next to be replaced" is for an October date. But if we bumped Rosetta Stone, people would be steamed. And it is unnecessary, we can get on the page any time we want.--Wehwalt (talk) 02:11, 4 September 2010 (UTC)
Ok, I will watch it especially then. I think we will get the day one way or another. Thanks for helping me understand the process better and preparing my points blurb. I hope no one thinks I'm being coached. haha. --NortyNort (Holla) 02:26, 4 September 2010 (UTC)
We are operating entirely in the open.--Wehwalt (talk) 02:30, 4 September 2010 (UTC)
I know, I was just kidding about that.--NortyNort (Holla) 02:52, 4 September 2010 (UTC)
I know, but I felt the need to say that as a lot of people don't understand jokes on WP.--Wehwalt (talk) 02:56, 4 September 2010 (UTC)

This is true. By the way, if you are interested in working on another FA, I want to get Grand Coulee Dam up to FAC eventually. I have expanded it a lot today but work is left to be done; some expanding, prose, lead and citations among a few. The story behind the dam is just about as dramatic and interesting as Hoover. I will be gone for three weeks in October and won't edit at all, so I was thinking of pushing it through afterward. I don't have specific special days for it now but they had the 75th anniversary of construction starting in 2008, it was dedicated in June 1941 and completed sometime in 1942.--NortyNort (Holla) 10:08, 4 September 2010 (UTC)

That is the obvious candidate. I also saw plenty of images on the Bureau of Reclamation web site. I have no objection to doing it, but I would have to see what references are out there. No great hurry though, let's get Hoover put to bed first.--Wehwalt (talk) 13:29, 4 September 2010 (UTC)
I'm in no hurry. Online books are hard to find but I've found a few. Pictures are good but not nearly as many in the BOR database as Hoover Dam had, especially historical ones. I grabbed some off of the BPA.gov website.--NortyNort (Holla) 13:44, 4 September 2010 (UTC)
Let's talk about it when you get back from your break. Meantime I will look around the Web as well and keep an eye out for books when I visit Hoover Dam next month.--Wehwalt (talk) 14:09, 4 September 2010 (UTC)

Well, Raul picked it to run on the 30th. So it is all over but the vandalism.--Wehwalt (talk) 05:34, 22 September 2010 (UTC)

I saw that he picked it and we had an early vandalism today. It looked like Dabomb had protected it but I didn't see the symbol or effect. Was the 10 pts. a new record?

Question

Why did you remove this? Everard Proudfoot (talk) 01:29, 4 September 2010 (UTC)

I have asked for further input at WP:BLPN. Everard Proudfoot (talk) 01:38, 4 September 2010 (UTC)

3RR

You currently appear to be engaged in an edit war according to the reverts you have made on Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. Note that the three-revert rule prohibits making more than three reversions on a single page within a 24-hour period. Additionally, users who perform several reversions in content disputes may be blocked for edit warring even if they do not technically violate the three-revert rule. When in dispute with another editor you should first try to discuss controversial changes to work towards wording and content that gains a consensus among editors. Should that prove unsuccessful, you are encouraged to seek dispute resolution, and in some cases it may be appropriate to request page protection. If the edit warring continues, you may be blocked from editing without further notice. Everard Proudfoot (talk) 02:04, 5 September 2010 (UTC)

Thank you for the unnecessary template. It was four reverts in over 24 hours if you looked at the article history. This issue is also at BLPN and ANI, so there is no need for talk page harassment. Please contribute to the various discussions if you are concerned. --NortyNort (Holla) 02:15, 5 September 2010 (UTC)
Remember that an administrator may still act whenever they believe a user's behavior constitutes edit warring, and any user may report edit-warring, even if the three-revert rule has not been breached. The rule is not an entitlement to revert a page a specific number of times.. Everard Proudfoot (talk) 02:16, 5 September 2010 (UTC)
I am aware of that. Please pay attention to the discussions as I am not the only editor reverting or disputing the IPs edits. Also, the IP has reverted or re-added his disputed text 9x (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9). You did not warn that user, which I think is fair and proper in this case. --NortyNort (Holla) 05:45, 5 September 2010 (UTC)

Vandalism?

This is because of this (notice) done by User:Bine Mai. Should keep an eye on his work just for accuracy reasons. ;) Rehman(+) 15:47, 11 September 2010 (UTC)

Hmm, I think it may have been a mistake in good faith. A few coordinates in Brazil I looked at like the one for Agua Vermelha Dam just needed their northing switched to "S" and "E" to "W". After that the coordinate either landed near the dam or near the local city named after the dam. I looked at the coord for Changheba Dam in China and it just landed on Ganzhou city. Not sure exactly where that dam is. But the coordinates should land on the dam or power plant. Bine Mai doesn't come off as a vandal but it was good at least to notify him that they need to be verified. Thanks.--NortyNort (Holla) 16:29, 11 September 2010 (UTC)

Oh and those coords that Stepheng3 removed in your second cited edit above were pretty bad. Minutes and seconds should never be at or above 60. I hope everything gets corrected and Bine Mai understands but I will keep an eye out, thanks again.--NortyNort (Holla) 16:33, 11 September 2010 (UTC)

List of pumped-storage hydroelectric power stations‎

Hi. Someone added the U.S. states after the flags. Do you think we should allow this, or remove such practice to not make the table too large? After all, clicking on the coordinates does show the relevant locale details... Rehman(+) 00:03, 14 September 2010 (UTC)

I agree with you and reverted it. It is too large and it is either the country or state. If we did state, we'd have to do states for the other countries as well.--NortyNort (Holla) 08:14, 14 September 2010 (UTC)

"The" Hoover Dam

I notice we start the article "The Hoover Dam" but then throughout the article refer to it without the word "the". Thoughts?--Wehwalt (talk) 02:35, 20 September 2010 (UTC)

Well, the article exludes "The" but it is in the blurb. It may be my fault, I usually put "The" before landmarks and other things of that nature named after a person because it sounds better to me. Especially in the lead. It should be consistent and uniform though. "The" is used five times in the article and much more without, so I am fine with dropping the "the's". Is there a proper MOS way? A few of my friends joke on me though with the way I describe the name of highways, espcecially when I was in DC and called it the 395. Being from NY, it is common to say "the Henry Hudson", "the 95", "the Major Deegan", "the Sprain", etc.--NortyNort (Holla) 03:03, 20 September 2010 (UTC)

You say that you couldn't see the source in Google Books but I had no such problem. Can you tell me which ones you couldn't see? I think the problem is to do with Google Books showing you the page if you search for a certain string that leads to that page but not showing it if you just start at the beginning and turn to the page. Hi. Can you expand this? Dr. Blofeld 16:09, 24 September 2010 (UTC)

No problem. I put an infobox in there along with a reference, can't do much more right now.--NortyNort (Holla) 21:58, 24 September 2010 (UTC)

1 million

It was a complete surprise to me to be quite honest. I was creating Mont Babel (English version here: Mount Babel (Quebec)), a mountain sitting in the middle of the Manicouagan Reservoir, and a fellow Quebec editor decided to create a red link for Louis Babel (English version here: Louis Babel), for which the mountain is named. I took it as a gentle nudge and I started looking for sources. I knew we were close to 1 million but I was not in a race for anything; the first draft was about 5K. :) Anyway I'm doing a national radio show this P.M., getting my 15 minutes in the spotlight.Bouchecl (talk) 14:54, 25 September 2010 (UTC)

25 DYKs

The 25 DYK Creation and Expansion Medal
I do try and make sure that these awards do out on time, but Dam, Dam and Dam! I've missed giving one to NortyNort who certainly isn't considered "nn" by wikipedia. You have powered your way through creating over thirty articles currently. Not only that I see your name contributing to the DYK and wiki project in general. Thanks to you from me and the wiki. Cheers Victuallers (talk) 16:53, 25 September 2010 (UTC)
Congrats for a well-deserved barnstar! Bouchecl (talk) 18:27, 25 September 2010 (UTC)
