Totally congrats and kudos. Now if only I can focus on one topic long enough to get one of the BC gold rushes into something approaching FA....I'm kinda scattered obviously ;-). Was stopping by partly to invite you to a dicsussion on Talk:Robert Gray (sea-captain) about a possible merge with the poorly-titled Gray Sails the Columbia River article, and also to invite you to join Wikipedia:WikiProject British Columbia (even though you're in California; it's your interest in regional history/geography that leads me to suggest this, as I think you could contribute a lot....pre-railway history of BC is intrinsically tied into Cali/SF). Also please check out (and add to, if you wish) User talk:Skookum1/BC&PacificNorthwestHistory which is meant to be a forum although for now it's just copy-pastes of some of my talk page posts; a subpage of it User talk:Skookum1/BC&PacificNorthwestHistory/Resources currently only has stuff on Joseph Martin (Canadian politician), our Premier for a brief few crazy months in 1900, but the idea is to use the forum/resources pages to repro out-of-print and public domain print materials for other authors to use/read for their articles; I'll be adding stuff on Arthur Bunster next (who died in SF, btw) but the idea is also maps, images, sets of links to useful webpages and so on; add to these pages as you see fit, if you like. At some point, btw, I'm hoping to "mine" the Bancroft Collection for materials on BC, although some historians lately have gone down there - Bancroft deposited a lot of stuff down there that's not on 'fiche or film up here, although the Archives] thinks what they have is complete; so many early pioneers were American that Bancroft, our main historian of the day, decided to ship all their diaries and other records back to the States....research is complicated on the earliest period because many placenames changed, and/or there's many spelling variations (e.g. Lillooet, Littlewhite, Lilywet, Lilwat, Liluet, and more just on that one town; which in the period of its founding was actually several small towns Cayoosh Flat, Kayousch, Parsonsville, Marysville, Bridge River, The Fountains etc.); likewise Princeton was Vermilion Forks and so on....Skookum1 20:03, 4 January 2007 (UTC)

I like that you called for discussion. That is what I am trying to do on other pages as well. And since, I have already indicated my choice, I am willing to wait to see if any of the other project members have a better idea. I would also like to see the intro shortened if possible too re your other call for action on this article. Most GA articles seem to have one or two high impact bullet statements. Moving the rest of the paragraph down to the intro or another section might prove difficult. Thanks for your welcome! I did notice it was a Featured Article and know that hard work has gone into it. That's why I made the comments to you only first to gage what could be done for it. I have seen also on some of WP:CAL articles slip from that status and GA to lower ones (the symbol broken in half). I would hate for that to happen to happen to an article like this that covers of the most important state events.

I am also working on Rancho article for our project. I am visiting various articles to see what if any info they have on the ranchos in California. Sadly, according to BlankVerse, we have no rancho article except for a listing of the ranchos. The one that I found to be most interesting concerns the only Native American to hold a Mexican land grant. The downside is the story is somewhat covered in the Olompali State Historic Park. I would ask you to visit that talkpage to gage your opinion on what article should be developed.

History of the West Coast of North America

Another great history article.

I will be using History of the West Coast of North America as an example of a good encyclopedia overview article. (see The Indian Wars of the Great Plains and its AFD. That article was originally titled The Western Frontier.)

NB, despite NorCalHistor's tremendous efforts, the article still has a long way to go in terms of the various Spanish-British-Russian interactions, esp. during the marine fur trade, and also in various other matters; I've only just begun to write up various of the many (too many) marine disasters, and also the vanished industrial ghost towns of the BC Coast which need more extensive discussion (e.g. Ocean Falls, Anyox for starters). Integrating material/issues that have other articles, which are also in need of attention/diversification/expansion, is also on the boards (Inside Passage, the Alaska, Oregon and San Juans boundary disputes, the "Salmon War" of the 1990s, the civilization of the Northwest peoples; and more; I've just been busy myself - too damn ADHD; but there's more to be done yet; and writing up to the same standard that NorCalHistory has established is a daunting prospect, voluble and detailed enough as I often am....Skookum1 07:47, 25 January 2007 (UTC)

BTW NorCalHistory, I'm involved in a nasty spat with someone on Talk:Oregon Country and have disengaged for now (despite various snipes coming from the other side); I have big issues with the American-flavoured/detailed content of the Oregon boundary dispute/treaty/country articles, likewise the Pig War and Alaska Boundary Dispute (Inside Passage is almost entirely, or was, Alaskan-flavoured....). Anyway, not asking you to kibbitz; just to apply your common sense to the subjects I'm trying to raised, only to be passive-aggressived into having disengaging for now...hoping you might take an interest in the subject matter, at least over time; I'd like to see the British and British Columbian debates and historiographical opinions/sentiments more adequately represented; what seems to be balance isn't, let's put it that way. And at some time in the next month or two, I'm un-webbing and "going on the road" with my guitar, so there's only so much I can do Wiki-wise before that happens, and I'm hoping to find other Wikipedians who might "take up the torch" in some areas; fairness in Pacific Northwest history being one of them....Skookum1 07:47, 25 January 2007 (UTC)

Also, somewhere along the way, I think off Indian Wars, I was supposed to one day get to a fuller regional account of the Cayuse, Yakima, Rogue River, Fraser Canyon etc wars, as well as internecine warfare among the First Nations/Native Americans; as far as the coast goes that would mean addressing the wars of revenge/pride between the various chieftaincies of the Coast; came across a nasty passage concerning a Tongass raid on the Suguamish or Twana the other day, for instance, and the Haida extinction of the Qualicums....Skookum1 07:49, 25 January 2007 (UTC)

Nationalistic Canadians

Hi. There is a user who posted on here Skookum1 who is part of a contingency of Canadians who are doing personal attacks, deleting my edits, and generally making a hard time for any perspective on any pages that there is Canadian/American content on (I was actually surprised to see his name here as I came here on my own by your links to the California portal). But it makes sense that he is having spats with others on other pages because that is what he did with me -- making personal comments about me and such. If you are around and reading this (I know you said you are taking a break)... I would appreciate some help or advice in thwarting these people from their constant harassment of me, their constant reversions of my edits and their never ending and totally unfounded "warnings" they they post to my user talk page (including the fact that they are enlisting Canadian wiki "big guns" to try to threaten me or to try to get me blocked). re: California Gold Rush

I placed a note on the California Gold Rush talkpage that the start year in the teal box is in error. The Gold Rush began in 1848 but the box reads 1849. I have tried to correct the error but cannot see where that box appears. Ronbo76 01:27, 12 February 2007 (UTC)

User Spamreporter1 has made a proposal for the tagging issue. He was not previously involved with either project before seeing this discussion, and I belive that his opinion therefore is NPOV. Yesterdays' FA (DNA) got clobbered with vandalism and had to be semi-protected several times. I suspect that some schools are on winter break right now, so be prepared for an escalation in kids-outta-school vandalism tomorrow during the day. DNA required all hands on deck. I just realized that all the page number ranges in the refs are separated by hyphens instead of endashes and should be changed; probably after main page? Have a look at WP:DASH. Good luck ! About the copyright status of an image you put up

Just curious: The image 'The Attack' from the FA California Gold Rush is stated to be a "Public Domain" image, yet it has GNU Free Documentation License (tag: {GFDL-no-disclaimers}), and not a Public Domain tag ({PD}). May I know why please? Regards, AppleJuggler 05:21, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

Unacceptable attempt to ban other people from editing what you seem to think of as "your" article

Again I repeat that your attitude is out of order. You do not own the article and you are not entitled to instruct people not to edit any article in any circumstances. This applies to every word of every article with no exceptions whatsoever and it is irrelevant who has edited the article or how often. It is most emphatically not a requirement of wikipedia that edits should be discussed on the talk page first. I also regard your preemptive reference to WP:3RR as intimidatory. Continuing protection for California Gold Rush

Thanks for move-protecting California Gold Rush while it was the Main page FA on Feb. 14 (UTC). At this point, as you know, the article name remains on the Main page as a "Recently featured" and will still draw quite a bit of traffic. I know that the high level of vigilence many of us have maintained will start to drop during these next several days. Is it possible to keep the article "move-protected" for another three days, and better, is it possible to "semi-protect" it during this same time - there were over 100 vandalism incidents during the last 24 hours. Past experience tells me that the additional semi-protection is not necessary unless the article normally receives great amounts of vandalism. Now that California Gold Rush is no longer today's featured article, more likely than not the vandalism will come to a stop. -- tariqabjotu 00:35, 15 February 2007 (UTC)

Australia and California gold connections

G'day NorcalHistory. Looks like you guys got a hell of pasting with vandals etc around 14 Feb. Anyway, a few days have passed since your site's attacks and chaos; so I'm checking back with you and your group to explore inserting a piece that links the California goldrush into the Australian goldrushes of 1851. I don't think the piece requires an epic tome, rather that some ex-Australian '49ers recognized a similarity between the two locations and Hargraves dropped his explorations in California and raced home; as did some other Aussies. The discoveries of Australian lodes by the ex'49ers attracted other ex-'49ers from California as miners, engineers, businessmen and they participated in and made significant contributions to Australia's social and political development, including the Eureka Rebellion (1854).

Short and simple plus a few references- that should do the job. But it rounds out the article setting the goldrushes of the 19th century into a worldwide context and inter linking them. An almost forgotten flow-on of the post-Australian goldrushes was that our ex-miners drifted into Africa, discovering gold and diamonds and played a role on the Jo'burg goldfields and lead-up to the Boer War. It also gives a linking framework to the expansion of settler societies during that century. For your considerations please. Tonyob 04:05, 21 February 2007 (UTC)
