Afro-Puerto Ricans
[edit]Noopinonada, thank you for expressing yourself in my talk page. Being a New York Puerto Rican who was discriminated against only because his parents were from the island and being an activist in the 60's Latino and Black Power movements, I know and can understand how sensitive race issues can be.
This will be an academic discussion between us and not a dispute as you know more too often occurs in Wikipedia. I have never heard of the term "Afro-Puerto Rican" here in the states, in Puerto Rico nor in academic circles. Terms such as "Afro-American", "Native-American" and so on, are terms invented and generally used in the United States which in my opinion has united separate ethnic groups, but has kept the United States disunited as a nation of soley "Americans." Puerto Ricans have never used terms as Afro-Puerto Ricans, French-Puerto Ricans and so on and so forth. We call ourselves simply "Puerto Ricans" and/or "Boricuas," punto y se acabo. To create such terms is an attempt to divide our people into ethnic groups and divide us as a people. Now mind you, this is only my opinion.
I agree, with you that "using the current category will cause this page to blow up with all sorts of non-black boricuas.", that would be a problem because as you know there is a saying in Puerto Rico "El que no tiene dinga tiene mandinga". Tell you what, even though I do not believe in neither of the categories (including mine) I won't object to "Afro-Puerto Rican" as long as a precise definition is written as to what is an Afro-Puerto Rican and which are the criteria's and parameters which will be set to determine who will be in this list. For example: will Arturo Alfonso Schomburg, Jose Campeche and Miguel Henriquez be on the list? Schomburg was half German plus Campeche and Henriquez were mulattos.
Once a precise definition as to the term Afro-Puerto Ricans is written and a set of criteria which is to be met is posted on the category's page, then I will not mind a revert back to said category and I will delete the one which I created. Tony the Marine (talk) 05:28, 26 October 2008 (UTC)
- I have to tell you that I am really enjoying this intellectual conversation with you. It is easier to determine who is an Afro-American in the Untied States, since multi-racial marriages were rare and most black Americans could trace their total heritage to Africa. You know that the term "Afro-American" was coined in the late 60's - early 70's in the U.S. that is a given. You also know that mixed marriages (and rapes) between the Spaniards and the Taino and African women were common in Puerto Rico as early as the 16th century. Therefore, it is hard to determine who is and who isn't an Afro-Puerto Rican for the English public unless we define such a term.
I would like for you to define the following: An Afro-Puerto Rican is ....
I know that something good is going to come out of this. Tony the Marine (talk) 00:36, 3 November 2008 (UTC)
Re:Afro-Puerto Rican
[edit]Thank you for your message, as I stated before for me it is pleasure to have an academic discussion with someone like you. I like your definition and I think that you're on the right track in providing a precise definition to the term. Like we say in Puerto Rico "Tu eres uno de los buenos" and there should be more people like you. Tony the Marine (talk) 20:25, 23 August 2009 (UTC)

[edit]I see what youre saying about yuca and sweet potatos. I honestly thought they were from Africa. Can you get a cite? I hate leaving information like that uncited.Thelmadatter (talk) 03:22, 12 February 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for your edits!
[edit]Just wanted to say thanks for keeping the Salsa Music article unbiased (I saw your edits to fix it, including this one, http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Salsa_music&curid=85170&diff=444370554&oldid=444364340).
I think the editor who made the biased edits has tried to do so before under an IP address. If it continues, we should bring the issue up on the talk page, and point out that the issue has been brought up before, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Salsa_music/Archive_2#Editing_about_Cuban_or_Puerto_Rican_origin_ad_nauseum. If we can find a reputable source that proves that salsa originated as a Cuban genre, that would help too, I should have some links to some possible sources on my page if you can't find any references from the sources that are already on the article. - Hey, so I checked it out, and the Salsa music article actually already has plenty of citations that say salsa is Cuban in origin, but I went ahead and added another citation anyway, because apparently one or two just aren't enough :/
