User talk:Nivenus
Welcome!
[edit]I hope you like this place — I sure do — and want to stay. Before getting too in-depth, you may want to read about the five pillars of Wikipedia. If you need help on how to title new articles check out the naming conventions, and for help on formatting the pages visit the manual of style. If you need help look at Wikipedia:Help and the FAQ , plus if you can't find your answer there, check the Village Pump (for Wikipedia related questions) or the Reference Desk (for general questions)! There's still more help at the Tutorial and Policy Library. Plus, don't forget to visit the Community Portal. And if you have any more questions after that, feel free to post them on my user talk page.
Additional tips
[edit]Here's some extra tips to help you get around in the 'pedia!
- If you want to play around with your new Wiki skills the Sandbox is for you.
- You can sign your name using three tildes (~). If you use four, you can add a datestamp too.
- You may want to add yourself to the new user log.
- If you ever think a page or image should be deleted, please list it at the votes for deletion page. There is also a votes for undeletion page if you want to retrieve something that you think should not have been deleted.
- If you're still entirely confused, or would like to get a better grasp of your wikipedia skills, and you have an IRC client (or don't mind getting one), check out the Bootcamp. It's not what it sounds like, but it is fun and can help you with your editing skills.
- If you're bored and want to find something to do, try the Random page button in the sidebar, or check out the Open Task message in the Community Portal.
Happy Wiki-ing.

You know, we really don't need separate articles on all the ships in the Homeworld series; what about merging all of the relevant details into the Ships of Homeworld article?--Pharos 02:03, 4 August 2005 (UTC)
- There's only so much information on a topic like this that's appropriate for an encyclopedia, even an internet-based one. Please read Wikipedia:Fancruft. Additionally, the fan-created stuff doesn't really belong here at all, beyond maybe the barest mention. If you really want to include all these details you can do this at Wikicities, where you can create a special wiki just for Homeworld stuff.--Pharos 03:34, 4 August 2005 (UTC)
- There is a huge number of details that goes into programming a game as complicated as Homeworld that really don't belong in a general encyclopedia. But the information does not have its own article doesn't have to be lost; much of it can be up-merged into summary pages and the really specific stuff can go in a Wikicity. How about if we do it this way: we'll have separate articles on the factions like the Kushan and separate articles on broad classes of ships like Motherships, but not articles on individual ship types.--Pharos 05:37, 4 August 2005 (UTC)
Look, your're still creating more fancruft-type articles. This level of detail is just not appropriate for Wikipedia. Please merge this info into summary articles/create a Wikicity for the details or I will have to start nominating these articles for deletion.--Pharos 09:39, 4 August 2005 (UTC)- Sorry, I didn't notice the time of creation of Kuudark Assault Frigate was only 3 minutes after my last message to you. I still await your reply to my above propsal.--Pharos 09:52, 4 August 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading Image:Karan concept.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.
If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{GFDL}} to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media qualifies as fair use, please read fair use, and then use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Longhair 09:09, 3 February 2006 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:Karan_sjet.gif
[edit]Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Karan_sjet.gif. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Image copyright problem with Image:Fleet Command.gif
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:Fleet Command.gif. You've indicated that the image is being used under a claim of fair use, but you have not provided an adequate explanation for why it meets Wikipedia's requirements for such images. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check
- That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for each article the image is used in.
- That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Fleet command returns.jpg)
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:Fleet command returns.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Re: Zarmina's World
[edit]The original paper mentions "Zarmina's World" in passing as a thank you note to his wife. On the very last page, devoted to thanks and acknowledgments, it says:
SSV would like to extend a very special thanks to his wife Zarmina Dastagir for her patience, encouragement, and wise counsel. And even though, if confirmed, the habitable planet presented herein will officially be referred to by the name GJ 581g, it shall always be known to SSV as "Zarmina's World".[1]
I don't think it was intended to be as serious as the MSM is making it out to be. First of all, look at the history of the 492 exoplanets found so far; do any one of them have an unofficial name in use like this? I don't think they do. Check the various exoplanet database entries, and watch the NSF news conference video and the press releases from the NSF, NASA, Carnegie, and UCSC. This is a human interest angle that the MSM media is using to get people interested in a "hard" news story. It's not really relevant. Viriditas (talk) 07:30, 2 October 2010 (UTC)
- Your point is well-made and I'd be happy to remove it if the IAU comes up with something different. However, the idea's not entirely unprecedented. The dwarf planet Eris was referred to as Xena frequently before the name Eris was settled on.
- I'm not suggesting a name change. I just think it's worth noting. Nivenus (talk) 07:53, 2 October 2010 (UTC)
- Why wasn't it noted by any of the official press releases or by SSV himself in the one-hour long press conference? If it was, please correct me. Again, this is a human interest angle, and as SSV said in the paper, it is only known by his wife's name to him, nobody else. "Xena" was a name that was actually used by the team. If we have evidence that "Zarmina" is actually in use, then yes, let's add it to the article. So far, we have no such evidence. As such, I don't think there is any comparison between Xena and Zarmina. Viriditas (talk) 07:58, 2 October 2010 (UTC)
- I don't know, NASA (which I cited) seems like a legitimate source. Granted, it's a very light, just-for-fun site hosted on NASA, but it is run by actual researchers. Nivenus (talk) 07:59, 2 October 2010 (UTC)
- I saw it, and like the other MSM, it's a human interest angle. I have no objection to you adding it to the discovery section (with future elaboration) but I don't think it belongs in the lead. Viriditas (talk) 08:07, 2 October 2010 (UTC)
