I've noticed you make a fair number of comments on FA nominations; I was hoping perhaps you could take a look at Caroline Island and tell me what you notice can be improved as I help this article work its way up to FA status. Thanks! -- Seth Ilys 18:45, 11 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Nichalp, can you have a look at the above page? I had placed a prod tag on the page, as I dont know if a single song deserves its own article, especially if its not very well known. But I may be wrong about this one, as another editor has removed the tag. Wanted to know your view on this. -- Lost 13:20, 12 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Maps

[edit]

Those two maps are done (Image:Operationduck.svg, Image:Operationeasy.svg). Probably sometime later I'll convert all the maps on Indo-Pakistani War of 1947. deeptrivia (talk) 01:11, 13 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Incidently, there's some problem with Image:Operationeasy.svg. As you resize the image, the text changes its relative position wrt other objects. What do you think is the problem. I had unflowed the text (in case this is related). deeptrivia (talk) 01:17, 13 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Your going by a technicality and your basicall insulting me because im Indian. India became Independant in 1947 yes....INDEPENDANT...that does not mean it didnt exist before....It was called INDIA by the Greeks....Hindustan by the Persians....Land of the Aryans in Veic times....These are not opinions these are facts....IM dying to see your response to this because I really dont think u have any idea how uneducated u are on this matter

I'd quite like to change it back, because IE6 produces a few ugly-looking inches of whitespace after Main article: geology of Venus on my 1280x0124 screen. SVG Map problem

[edit]

Hey Nichalp. I just finished making Image:Ladakh1.svg. It shows if you click to see the full resolution version, but doesn't show on the article, or even the image page. A problem similar to the India map problem we encountered before. Any solution to this yet? BTW, this is just a draft, so you'll see many font/etc. problems. deeptrivia (talk) 06:17, 16 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I solved the problem. Thanks anyway. deeptrivia (talk) 06:41, 16 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Sure Nichalp, that shouldn't be a problem at all. deeptrivia (talk) 15:30, 16 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I extended the map in all directions based on other sources, and also changed minor things like colors a bit. Hope it's alright now. The new version is at Image:Ladakh2.svg (my mistake), so probably Image:Ladakh1.svg can be deleted. deeptrivia (talk) 04:34, 17 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Take a look now. I've followed color schemes being discussed on the project, deleted a few labels, increased font sizes etc. Are all labels expected to be readable at the resolution used in an article? If yes, probably I can make another map for the article with only the most important things on it, and we can retain this map (maybe on commons), since a detailed map of such regions is quite useful to a lot of people. deeptrivia (talk) 06:26, 17 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ladakh map - new version

[edit]

Check out the new version of Image:Ladakh2.svg. I've changed some fontsizes and colours and other minor things. Now that I've spent so much time on this map, I might as well spend some more and raised it to FP standards. This, of course, would be made possible entirely by your comments ^_^. I'm sure if I take one map to FP standard, I'll learn a lot which I could use to make good quality maps in future. Regards, deeptrivia (talk) 18:38, 18 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Thanks for the message.

I would prefer no external links at all on the Kashmir page. I had added the links in an organised manner as otherwise the Kashmiri Pandit sites dominated that also goes against the external links guideline, which says:

'On articles with multiple points of view, a link to prominent sites dedicated to each, with a detailed explanation of each link. The number of links dedicated to one point of view should not overwhelm the number dedicated to any other.'

That's what had happened to the Kashmir page, one opinion dominated than others.

I will strive my best to proper content to the Kashmir page (probably the early history for a start as the present material is incomplete). I may need your help to know where to add what. Don't want to goof up again.

Thanks!

Review request — Kochi

[edit]

Hello! I've been working on the Kochi article for some time now, hoping to get it featured. The article has recently undergone a peer review, in which I received some really amazing feedback. Among the pieces of advise, was a suggestion to ask you to take a quick look. After going through some of the previous peer reviews that were attended by you, I must say that their suggestion was a turely invaluabe one . The Kochi article's peer review has now been archived (I thought it best not to bother you while on your wikivacation). I know the article must still be a far cry from an FAC, but I'd appreciate your comments and suggestions. Thanks! -- thunderboltza.k.a.Deepu Joseph |TALK14:41, 10 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

How simply ungrateful of me. I just remembered I forgot to thank you for the review on Kochi. I feel like s**t. I'm really sorry. Please accept my belated thanks! I'm working towards reducing the size of the page, as you said. The bulk of the 48 kb is from the references. And compared to Kochi's big moma (who is 74), its actually nothing. ;-) I think Kochi can be at most trimed a few kbs more. Will let you know when I'm done. The new username is equally as bad and perhaps even worse. It is User:Systemadmin, this user is partaking in similar reversions like Moderator so I assume they could be the same person. Ladakh less detailed map

[edit]

Nichalp, I've removed some details from the map. Please have a look now: Image:Ladakh2.svg. What do you think? There were no mountains below 5000 m, they were all passes, but I did choose a threshold for both mountains and passes to filter the less prominient ones out. For passes, I just filtered out the less known ones, because the height of a pass is not a good indicator of its importance. deeptrivia (talk) 03:39, 21 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Some notes:

  1. Special:Listusers/developer does not list all developers/network operations staff
  2. Users with that permission might not have shell access, which is what most people would term "uber god" access
  3. A developer and a system administrator are not the same thing

Locator

[edit]

Nichalp, Good news. I finally found a solution for the locator. I saw this dicussion and found this. This template picks up lat and long values and places a locator dot. It is pretty cool. Agateller RFA

[edit]

Hmm, that didn't really seem like a speedy close to me. How much time was left on the clock? Kim Bruning 19:07, 23 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

About a day left, but voting history in an RFA suggests that a badly failing candidate can never receive the required level of support to succeed on the last day. Carrying on is thus pointless. =Nichalp «Talk»=

If the Agateller RfA was simply a vote, then I can see that you are right in conceding the foregone conclusion, and I would agree with you. But is RfA simply a voting showdown of power? Surely RfA is more than a vote. --Rednblu 04:41, 24 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Of course it's not, but shows a level of consensus. But with a support % of 40%, and even if I do discount weak votes, it would never touch 80%. I did put in a lot of thought into in, and considered the support of experienced admins who voted in favour, but the going was against Agateller. =Nichalp «Talk»= 08:48, 24 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
But possibly your concluding that the "going was against Agateller" is based on your evaluation that Agateller is wrong. Would you agree? If Agateller is right, then Agateller's RFA was a living case of the serious problem that Agateller brought to our attention. If Agateller is right, then what you call a "level of consensus" was nothing more than the power and honor politics of, what Agateller called, the "treehouse club" where someone in the treehouse club will surely help us out by suppressing such discussions of serious problems early. --Rednblu 14:58, 24 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Agatella being right or wrong would be very subjective for me to call, and it is not in my capacity to decide that just because he is "wrong" (quote), that I must fail him. As I've put it, it's not just the support/oppose votes that matter, I have also read what the neutrals are saying to get a clearer understanding. Yes, Agatella has spoken out against a voting mentality that has seeped into wikipedia. The discussion is valid, but it should be on the WT:RFA talk page, where serious concerns about the process are raised and debated. The community has asked him to get a little more experience before trying again, and that's the way I saw it before closing the RFA. =Nichalp «Talk»= 16:06, 24 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
"The community has asked him...." Are you sure about that? In any case, may I rephrase this comment as a request: Please do not close an RfA early if there has been a comment added to that RfA in the last 12 hours. The Agateller RFA illustrates the kind of work that early closing suppresses, censors, and obliterates. That kind of work is never done on the talk page. That is a falsifiable hypothesis that you can test on the whole history of Wikipedia. That kind of work is never done on the talk page because the talk page is not the RfA. --Rednblu 16:36, 24 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
You do have a penchant for asking closed-ended questions, which you take to answering yourself, and I'm not going to get drawn into it. The community has given us the madate to close an RFA when we deem fit, and it is the same community that has not supported the nomination by a large margin. I'm sorry if you have the impression that I squelched the issue, but I stress, the topic on the "tree-house" club (a view of the process) should be brought out on the RFA talk. I suggest you relax, and allow Anthony to nominate himself after a month or so. I won't be commenting on the issue any further. Thank you for your cooperation. =Nichalp «Talk»= 17:12, 24 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunetly, the source you gave hasn't been updated for eight years (the site mentions that the article was from May 15, 1998), thus it doesn't mention that both India and China have agreed to respect and clarify the Line of Actual Control agreement in 2005.[2]--TBCTaLk?!? 17:57, 25 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

UA administration trouble

[edit]

Hello Nichalp. This is again regarding the Kochi page. I was busy with something the last few days, and couldn't work on it much. I read up a bit on précis writing. Will certainly try to edit it likewise. But there is this problem creeping up in the article about which I thought I'd seek your advice. The problem is that the whole of Kochi UA is not under a single person. The Kochi UA contains many municipalities too, which do not come under the Kochi Mayor. So should I rewrite the article, mentioning the administrator of each municipality in the civic admin section? And what should I do about the infobox's Mayor column? Should I change to some other infobox? Are other UAs under a single person? -- thunderboltza.k.a.Deepu Joseph |TALK13:07, 23 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

If the article is to describe only the area under the jurisdiction of the municipal corporation, like you said, then a lot has to be altered — Kochi would lose its two airports, all the industrial area, refineries, IT and biotech parks and the capital status of the erstwhile Kingdom of Kochi. Also, the population and area in the infobox would have to be changed. I'm really sorry to be bothering you like this. But I'd really appreciate your advice. Thanks! -- thunderboltza.k.a.Deepu Joseph |TALK10:48, 27 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I saw your comments on a few China maps that were not neutral. It doesn't seem anyone has bothered to respond.
