thank you

[edit]
My RFA passed today at 150/48/6. I wanted to thank you for weighing in, and I wanted to let you know I appreciated all of the comments, advice, criticism, and seriously took it all to heart this past week. I'll do my absolute best to not let any of you down with the incredible trust given me today. rootology (C)(T) 07:50, 1 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Quick Question

[edit]

Hi, I was just reading Until It Sleeps' RfA, and saw the part you wrote about non-automated edits. Is there a special tool that tells you that? It would be very useful in the future. Thanks, LittleMountain5 21:55, 1 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Replied. neuro(talk) 21:57, 1 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Cool, thanks! LittleMountain5 22:02, 1 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

RfA thanks

[edit]

(I guess I already thanked you but .....) Thank you for the trust you placed in me by supporting my RfA (which passed and, apparently, I am now an admin!). I will do my best to continue to act in a way that is consistent with the policies of wikipedia as well with our common desire to build and perfect this repository of human knowledge; and can only hope that you never feel that your trust was misplaced. It looked like the sort of made-up thing some gamers cooked up; Heaven knows we get enough of that. If you're certian that it's notable, I'll go ahead and undelete it. Thanks for letting me know. PMDrive1061 (talk) 22:42, 4 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Looks like you were trying to redirect it about the same time I deleted it. Anyway, it's fixed now. Thanks again. I just wish at times that the original posters wuold be a bit more careful regarding detail and layout before they hit the "save" key, but there it is. Apology

[edit]

I've posted a general apology in my withdrawal statement at the Oversight election page, but I felt that as a contributor you deserve an individual apology too.

It was not my intention to let the election begin without a statement, but an IT gremlin "ate" my first attempt at posting there some hours before the election was to begin and then unforseeable RL issues prevented me from getting back to it until too late. Thank you for your consideration and sincere regrets for wasting your time. --Dweller (talk) 10:24, 6 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I received a message from you w/ concerns about my user name. It comes from Mystery Science Theater 3000, after the character Crow T. Robot. I used it as my Xbox gamertag & figured that would be a good name for Wikipedia as well.

[edit]

Hi
Huh, I didn't know you were still around, I seemed to remember that you left, otherwise I would have notified you first that I was planning to mark {{Vacation4}} for deletion. Its additional functionality was added to {{vacation3}}, so it was equivalent to using {{vacation3|image=Airplane silhouette 45degree angle.svg}}, and it was only used by one user who is inactive.

[edit]

I've written an article about I. Pano Karatassos that has been deleted. He is definitely notable but my tone was biased and "unsalvagable" according to OrangeMike. Should I give up on writing it or try to to re-write it in a more neutral tone? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jgalfas (talkcontribs) 19:24, 10 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

AV

[edit]

Hi nero, how you doing these days? Hope all is well. Anyway - I remembered a discussion we had about anti-virus programs, and after a trial of NOD32, I took your advise and installed the Ariva program. After several days, I'm constantly annoyed by the popup ads that it produces. Is there a way to toggle this off? I respect your knowledge in this area, and that's why I installed the program, but the pop-ups are a pain in the but. Do they (the popups) go away after a while? To be honest, I'm inclined to go back to AVG at this point - but I wanted to get your input first. I'll be purchasing the NOD32 for my laptop, but cost issues require me to seek other programs for my server and other workstations on my lan - would love to get your input on this. Thanks buddy, hope you're doing well. ;) — Ched (talk) 09:05, 12 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Advice

[edit]

Yep, wondered who you were and then saw the explanation page. My advice would be to make some good solid article contributions, maybe a GA or two on something you like (music?) before running for adminship. As I am sure you remember, I am an inclusionist, but am prepared to trust those of a more deletionist spectrum if they show another side. Writing is good - I am always amused by whoever wrote discounting the time it takes to actually write content in a deletion debate. Also, think of GA (or DYK to an extent) as a chance for dealing under the pressure of scrutiny by others. I can help out with advice and clean up should you want to pursue this. Casliber (talk · contribs) 05:56, 14 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Short version of long story - no, we have not communicated before. I noted your first few edits as an experienced user, then noted your explanation, then remembered who you were, so I offered some advice. Featured Topic is a very good idea - good luck :) Casliber (talk · contribs) 14:04, 14 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Speedying while on AFD

[edit]

I hadn't, at that point, seen the discussion which justified the tag placement. However, in my experience of AfD in the past a regular AfD took precedence over a speedy, even if the consensus was snowballing toward a speedy (and perhaps the right thing to have done was to have closed the debate and deleted the article, but I was pressed for time). I mean, sometimes speedys aren't universally agreed on, and that could open up unnecessary drama if someone pressing for a speedy tags it for that, and then some admin doing CSD patrol comes along and deletes it. Daniel Case (talk) 23:14, 14 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know which AfD this is about so forgive me for my ignorance, but speedying articles which clearly meet the criteria on AfD is fine, especially if all participants who have comented say so.--Pattont/c 23:27, 14 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Thank you for weighing in at my RFA and thank you for the pretty graphs. I don't know if you appreciate me describing the graphs as "pretty", but there are a lot of unattractive graphs out there in the world so it's a definite compliment. And I will certainly not trout you for the issue with counting the number of days the RFA was open because it's a mistake I could've easily made myself! :D Somno (talk) 04:37, 15 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry

[edit]

Sorry about the multiple edit conflicts with you; my internet is having issues so I think I've been posting things after you redacted. I'm not sure.

Anyway, just out of curiosity, is there an thread or something about me going on? I'm just curious because this issue was resolved something like 24 hours ago (the discussion of it at WT:RFA ended and I already got a warning and yada yada), but just now I suddenly got further messages from both you and Patton123 in rapid succession. Is someone digging this up all over again? If there is a discussion about me going on somewhere, I would like to know about it. But I dunno, maybe this was just a coincidence. Anyway, thanks, rʨanaɢ talk/contribs 19:42, 15 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I saw that diff on WT:RFA and said on irc that wikipedia is becoming increasingly incivil, linking to the diff. Neurolysis was interested in the diff and warned you on your talk page before I had time to tell him it had already been dealt with.--Pattont/c 22:06, 15 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

RfA graphs

[edit]

The RfA graphs you've made, such as File:Nja247 RfA statistics - Tally.png and File:Nja247 RfA statistics - Trend.png are neat, interesting, and also useful. I'm curious, what made you decide to do them, and which RfAs are you doing them for? Thanks. Acalamari 21:42, 17 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, they're very good. I saw the one for Rootology's RfA, and noticed more since then. I'm curious to see the graph on an RfA where the support/oppose percentages change rapidly throughout the candidacy, though I would feel sorry for such a candidate. :) A candidacy where the support was low for the first couple of days and gained enough support to pass in the following days would be interesting too. I hope you continue them for the time being, they are useful.
Oh, and thanks for fixing the formatting on my talk page. Funnily enough, I edit-conflicted with you in fixing the formatting on your talk page. :) Best wishes. Acalamari 21:58, 17 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You're welcome. I'd nom you myself, but I really haven't looked into your contributions, plus I don't have the proper rights to review your deleted contribs (although I'm Spartacus! (formerly Balloonman) may be able to do that for you). If you'd like, however, I may be able to have a review by the time FlyingToaster's RfA finishes. Sorry for the late reply, but it's great that you want to be reviewed! Please do bear in mind that I also have RC Patrolling, real life endeavors, and an adoptee to tend to, so I won't be able to review you 24/7, but I'll do so whenever possible. I'll contact IS! about this as soon as you answer your first two review questions:
Q1. Do you have any good/featured work?
Q2. In which departments (i.e. WP:UAA, WP:CSD, WP:AIV, WP:AN, WP:RPE, WP:RFPP) would you be active as an admin? (If you're interested in WP:CSD, you and I both know that IS! will have something to review for his share right off the bat.)
In addition, would you like a subpage to be created to house the review, like User:Neurolysis/Admin review? I'll be awaiting the answers to your questions. Good luck! Dyl@n620 21:56, 20 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

How do you make more than one frame in Microsoft GIF Animator?

[edit]

I need to make an animated ad on Wikipedia, for WikiProject Koei Warriors Games. I already drew the pictures; however, I can't get more than one frame in. When I try inserting another picture, it just replaces tha previous picture in Frame #1. I can't type in the Image count text box, either, to change the frame count. Could you tell me how to organize the frames and all that?

If you don't use Microsoft GIF Animator, could you tell me what you use and how it works?

It's for Wikipedia:WikiProject Koei Warriors Games, and I uploaded the pictures. All I need is to put them into a forever-looping animation.

February 2009

[edit]

Please assume good faith in your dealings with other editors, which you did not on Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Feather Linux. Assume that they are here to improve rather than harm Wikipedia. neuro(talk) 21:27, 22 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Assumption requires a lack of proof — In my encounters with Chealer, I have acquired proof that he is not operating in good faith, and therefore cannot assume otherwise. WG:FAITH is also a mere guideline, not policy, and is therefore that much more irrelevant. ¦ Reisio (talk) 22:00, 22 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This kind of behaviour is absolutly dispicable and people who engage im it should not be editing Wikipedia. Overcome by anger you accused someone of not being happy untill Wikipedia has only three articles; this is understandable becuase of your recent disagreements, a "heat of the moment" type thing; but then to justify that behaviour after you have calmed down by calling basic civility and respect, one of the five pillars of Wikipedia, "irrelevant" is appalling. Guidelines are what Wikipedia is built on: try writing a featured article that doesn't comply with the manual of style. I suggest you keep away from Chealer in future.--Pattont/c 22:14, 22 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I agree, Chealer shouldn't be editing Wikipedia. :p Was calm the whole time, and I did not define what policies and guidelines are, nor the policies and guidelines themselves — if you have a problem with those definitions, my talk page isn't the place. I suggest Chealer keep away from myself and any articles I have spent time on (and more) in the future. ¦ Reisio (talk) 05:54, 23 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You have 'reasons for a belief', not 'proof'. Please don't confuse the two. neuro(talk) 23:03, 22 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Semantics aside, no, I have proof. When WP:FAITH says my understanding of good faith actions is established by a committee (and when it's policy), then your opinion will matter to my proof. ¦ Reisio (talk) 05:54, 23 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

RE: Signature

[edit]

Honestly, I don't think that "Jesus Loves You and Died for You" violates Wikipedia is Not a Soapbox. It's not like I'm going around saying "IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE IN CHRIST YOU WILL GO TO HELL!" Even though that is a Christian Doctrine, that is a very cruel thing to say in any case, lest religion be the actual subject of debate. All I ever say in the signature is "Jesus Loves You and Died for You", which merely states that Jesus, who in my belief system is the Savior (and Hebrew Messiah), loves whoever may be reading, which He does. He loves everyone, whether they believe or not. I'm not forcing anyone to convert to Christianity. All I am saying is that God loves everyone. That's it. Wikipedia is Not a Soapbox is correct, in that I am using a biased opinion, but this opinion has no effect on someone who reads it (in fact, a lot of YouTube bullies swear at me for mentiong Christ), so I can verify it. Nor is it one that would invoke a debate on this kind of website. Also remember that Wikipedia is Not Censored. Some things you will see around here are offensive. For instance, that "Divine Comedy" thing is so insulting to me, I just want to scream! Yet, I don't go deleting it... I WISH I COULD, but I can't. I'm not saying Jesus is the Messiah in my signature. Even though I believe He is, not everyone else does. He loves you. That's it. It's kind of like that "smile" thing. It's good to feel loved. I'm deeply sorry I offended you, but I believe what I believe, and unless I absolutely must take it down, I will continue to use it. Wikipedia is Not Censored. Thank you for not yelling at me and telling me there "is not a god". Most people do. I appreciate kindness. Have a glorious day!

:)

Offensiveness is immaterial. Your sig is in violation of WP:SOAP. Similar signatures have been required to change in the past. Please change it. Thank you. //roux   20:27, 23 February 2009 (UTC) (copied across from my talk)[reply]
I concur with Roux. WP:SOAP says:
Having such a line in your signature only serves two purposes:
  1. The obvious case (ie the literal), in which case your statement violates WP:SOAP
  2. To offend atheists or people of other religions, in which case your signature is divisive, and is not permitted (whilst it may serve this purpose, I understand it probably wasn't intended.)
About 2 billion people are Christians - that means over two thirds of people living in the world do not believe the same thing as you, and will potentially be offended (like I was, and am). It is not an appropriate thing to have in a signature. neuro(talk) 01:51, 24 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
To put it in some perspective, I once worked with someone who was part American Indian. He had a sense of humor about it, including sporting a bumper sticker on his car that said, "Custer died for your sins." 'Nuff sed? Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? 20:34, 26 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Re: IRC

[edit]

Hey man, again, I'd like to say I'm sorry for my behaviour earlier on. I honestly didn't mean anything by it and I am always a strong supporter of young people on Wikipedia (esp. at RfA where the ageism people come out in force). I can't make excuses for belittling you but I will say that I was just irritated at the discussion that was going on at the time. Again, I'm sorry, dude. Keep up the good work. RfA one day right? Message me and I'll nominate/support :-) ScarianCall me Pat! 08:37, 24 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia Signpost — February 23, 2009

[edit]

This week, the Wikipedia Signpost published volume 5, issue 8, which includes these articles:

The kinks are still being worked out in a new design for these Signpost deliveries, and we apologize for the plain format for this week.

With all due respect...

[edit]

...the "articles" are by a kid in Canada who's been recreating these things over and over again. If it isn't nonsense, it is certainly vandalism at this point. --PMDrive1061 (talk) 01:21, 25 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

RE: Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/WWEYANKS52

[edit]

You stated at WWEYANKS' RfA that he "wouldn't abuse the tools" and would "learn from any mistakes they may make." However, at Suntag's RfA (random choice) you stated that although he "has best intentions at heart" that "he is not ready". I just thought that might have been a little contradictory.

If it's still not clear: I was basically questioning your rationale for supporting WWEYANKS. I striked it because I figured it was kind of a stupid comment anyway. I wasn't feeling well that day (see edit summary here from a day before if you're really interested, lol). I sincerely hope there was no harm done.Bsimmons666 (talk) 03:25, 25 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'm running into Q&A about refs being blacklisted - you on IRC at the moment, or know anything about it? As the resident wiki-geek, it's time for you to get to work ... lol — Ched (talk) 02:22, 26 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Waterfall

[edit]

Knowing you don't want to use this page for socializing, I'll just keep it to this: Which waterfall is that? Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? 19:51, 26 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the coordinates. Hard to tell much from Google Maps, but at least I know where it is now. I'm guessing that with all the mountains and snow-melt, there are countless waterfalls in Switzerland, many of them unnamed. Hey, maybe you should name it after yourself. :) Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? 20:44, 26 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hey

[edit]

I don't have the email I originally sent to the company but I do have their response letter do you want that?  TramGuy  00:50, 28 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Update, I included a copy of the email they sent me, the problem with them is that their responses take about two weeks, It took me a while to get my hands on that PDF and image, so by the time they would respond to wikipedia's inquiry it would have already been removed. For now I removed it just to protect it, but I included the email as a source.  TramGuy  00:55, 28 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Templates

[edit]

How much do you know about working with templates? Someone asked me that on my talk page, and I know virtually nothing about it, as I tend to focus on plain old text. Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? 05:09, 28 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Charts

[edit]

Hey neuro. I've see you do a lot of graphs and such, would you be interested in doing one or two for me? I want to use them as graphics for the Shutdown day article that I pulled out of limbo. I can dig out my Excel and pivot table stuff if need be, but if it's something you enjoy - I figure you could do it a lot faster and nicer. Hope all is going well Cheers ;) — Ched (talk) 05:22, 28 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

this site describes the type of numbers I'm going to be looking for. I haven't bumped 2007 - 2008 - 2009 numbers together yet. I have all day Red Cross (First Aid / CPR) classes today - but will get back to you later tonight. I'm looking at 7:45 am EST now as I leave message (USA) - so give me about 10 hours or so from time of post, and I'll try to work up some numbers. Glad we have your brain on our side ;) Thx Neuro, appreciate it. ;) — Ched (talk) 12:47, 28 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

How can I reword my comment to better reflect my question to Ottava to ascern their comment without assuming bad faith? To be honest, I found your comment to me somewhat provocative, but I I understand that discussions can get heated and I hold no offense to you over your comment to my comment to Ottava's comment. Spinach Monster (talk) 20:18, 28 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Not a problem, my comment came from my casual perceptions frequenting RFAs recently and wasn't intended as an insult towards Ottava at all. Like I said afterwards on the RFA, anybody can oppose or support as they like and Ottava is no exception, but since Wikipedia isn't a Democracy, but it's also important to understand why they support or oppose if their opinion isn't clear, IMO. Regardless, I should have been more careful in my comment to avoid any ill will or misconstruances. Spinach Monster (talk) 20:34, 28 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'm interested in becoming an admin myself, so I'm wondering if you think I have the temperment that it takes. If not, how can I improve? Spinach Monster (talk) 21:06, 28 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Chris, re this comment, I agree with you that people can vote however they like. I probably shouldn't have drawn so much attention to the ILIKEIT thing; my main point was meant to be about the !vote-er's uneven application of this "doesn't need the tools standard." And, of course, people also have the right to apply standards unevenly in their voting; I just thought that issue might have some effect anyway on how the !vote should be weighed. Okay, I don't understand your point on the Soap Box, but I'll change it in respect.

Could you give me any suggestions for a new one?

Look around my page or contributions, I need some ideas there... I've used that signature for a LONG time.
