Of course we need tech people to run the Wikimedia websites. But technology is supposed to help us to write and share. I'm afraid that this knowledge engine sounds like it could create and select content automatically, which means instead of people.

We at the Wikimedia community try to encourage and help people around the world to learn about the world. So we take a little spare time each week to write texts, take photos and make videos.

History of the United States by state

Firstly - Wow! That's quite some trick with the wiki magic. I've not seen anything like it before and it was an interesting detour to find out about mw:Extension:Labeled Section Transclusion.

Unfortunately it looks like the article has some problems.

• It's too big. When {{Reflist}} won't resolve into a list of references because of the page size you know you've got a problem, and it's not just a matter of aesthetic opinion.

Perhaps (given that the title is "by state") removing the territories would get the article down to a size where things start to work again - but I doubt it.

• From the hidden categories that have been thrown up it would appear that a number of the articles you've put together have used the same names for their named references, meaning that your composite article has duplicate reference names which won't resolve.

Until the article starts to function more like a normal wiki article it's hard to offer any more useful review comments. Hope that helps, Cabayi (talk) 23:06, 10 September 2017 (UTC)

Sports numbers

Hello and thanks for your edits such as this adding sports numbers. After a detailed discussion last year at Talk:1#Retired Player Numbers, we filtered a mass of sports numbers down to just those numbers permanently retired by a major league (per Wikipedia:WikiProject Numbers#Numbers in sports) and moved it into its own article: List of retired numbers. It's not obvious where best to keep other jersey number information that is related more to the sport than to the mathematical properties of the number. Perhaps we need another new article. I understand that the articles 1 (number) and 10 (number) shouldn't have a list of every sports competitor who wore those nunmbers. However, I have started with number 35, so the list of notable competitors is rather short. I would like to continue adding these, are you opposed to it?

I don't fully understand which new article you are proposing. I mean, racecar numbers are very rarely retired, so they won't appear on List of retired numbers. Are you proposing a full list of notable sports numbers, including not retired numbers?

Sports and rodeo categories

Hi NaBUru, just a friendly note regarding these categories. You are the knowledgeable one regarding the sports categories. I work in the rodeo area. I just want to understand a couple things so in future I add articles to the correct ones. But first of all, I want to make sure there is consistency in the categories: Sports in Las Vegas and Sports competitions in Las Vegas. I noticed you moved a few around. You moved the two PRCA articles: i.e., the National Finals Rodeos articles and one of the PBR tour articles (Unleash the Beast Series) articles to the competition category. But you left some PBR and PRCA articles in the Sports in Las Vegas category. What is criteria for deciding which ones belong in each category? The two PBR articles are easy to tell from the titles. The two PRCA articles are the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. Hello, dawnleelynn! First of all, I changed the categories of hundreds of articles, so I may have made some mistakes.

The "sports competitions" categories are meant to include articles about competitions. Therefore, Category:Sports competitions in London includes articles such as London Marathon‎, London Grand Prix, London ePrix and 2012 Summer Olympics‎. Meanwhile, other subcategories of Category:Sport in London include articles about sports-related subjects that are not competitions, for example Chelsea F.C.‎, London Stadium and Rio Ferdinand.

However, some articles are ambiguous. For example, the National Basketball Association is an association, but it organizes a competition also called NBA.

A similar problem happens with the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association, which is the name for both the association and the competition. In this case, I preferred to be cautious, and keep the article in Category:Sports in Las Vegas.

However, Professional Bull Riders is an association that organizes competitions like the Unleash the Beast Series and the Velocity Tour. Therefore, it was easy to decide to keep the PBR article in "Sports in Las Vegas", and move "Unleash the Beast Series" to "Sports competitions in Las Vegas".

Actually, neither of those articles really belong to "Sports in Las Vegas" or its categories, because those series host events at multiple venues. Instead, the article that belongs there is PBR World Finals, just like National Finals Rodeo. But it's a redirect, not a standalone article, so I'm not opposed to keep the other articles there.

My recommendation is that you create a standalone article about the PBR World Finals, and remove the other articles from "Sports in Las Vegas".

NaBUru38 Oh, thank you that is most helpful and took you a bit of time to write all that up, I'm sure. I think I follow everything. I didn't realize that there was a redirect page of PBR World Finals to the PBR article. That's most helpful. There is actually a website for the PBR World Finals. And, actually, I just noted to write up an article for the PRCA steer roping finals separate from the National Finals Rodeo. Not many realize it's a separate event, the National Finals Steer Roping (NFSR). When I write that up, I will add it where the NFR article is. I think adding a finals article for the PBR is a good idea so I will add that to my list. It doesn't need to be super long. Once that is written, we can revisit what you said about where those two articles not really belonging where they are and putting the new article there instead. Thanks a bunch. I should be able to write something up within a couple weeks or so. I've just done a lot of expanding the PBR articles, found some great media guides, and have plenty of source material. Invitation to WikiProject Portals

The Portals WikiProject has been rebooted.

You are invited to join, and participate in the effort to revitalize and improve the Portal system and all the portals in it.

There are sections on the WikiProject page dedicated to tasks (including WikiGnome tasks too), and areas on the talk page for discussing the improvement and automation of the various features of portals.

Many complaints have been lodged in the RfC to delete all portals, pointing out their various problems. They say that many portals are not maintained, or have fallen out of date, are useless, etc. Many of the !votes indicate that the editors who posted them simply don't believe in the potential of portals anymore.

It's time to change all that. Let's give them reasons to believe in portals, by revitalizing them.

The best response to a deletion nomination is to fix the page that was nominated. The further underway the effort is to improve portals by the time the RfC has run its course, the more of the reasons against portals will no longer apply. RfCs typically run 30 days. There are 19 days left in this one. Let's see how many portals we can update and improve before the RfC is closed, and beyond.

A healthy WikiProject dedicated to supporting and maintaining portals may be the strongest argument of all not to delete.

We may even surprise ourselves and exceed all expectations. Who knows what we will be able to accomplish in what may become the biggest Wikicollaboration in years.

Let's do this.

I'd also like to let you know that the Portals WikiProject is working hard to make sure your support of portals was not in vain. The project has grown to 80 members so far, and has become a beehive of activity.

Our two main goals at this time are to automate portals (in terms of refreshing, rotating, and selecting content), and to develop a one-page model in order to make obsolete and eliminate most of the 150,000 subpages from the portal namespace by migrating their functions to the portal base pages, using technologies such as selective transclusion. Please feel free to join in on any of the many threads of development at the WikiProject's talk page, or just stop by to see how we are doing.
