Drumpf (also)

Hi MG: Thanks from me, too, for your alert re the "Drumpf" issue. Yes, I have the Drumpfinator extension installed here in Chrome, but it never occurred to me it would also change my WP edits-in-progress. Yes, I could keep deactivating the extension—but you know, the easiest solution is just to avoid entirely any articles mentioning the Racist-In-Chief. What a grand idea! In fact, I think I'll avoid everything mentioning him. Wow, I feel better already.
(BTW, I assume someone else created the preceding Drumpf entry here, and forgot to add their WP name by typing four tildes. It's either that or multiple personality disorder, so I'm being positive.) – AndyFielding (talk) 21:27, 12 January 2018 (UTC)

Jazz Jennings

Those sources make it perfectly clear. The birth notice says this: "Mr. and Mrs. Gregory Scott Bloshinsky (Jeanette Barie), Boca Raton, son, Jaron Seth"

Parents are Gregory and Jeanette, just like the article says. The third article is from 2006 and about transgender kids and says this: " How is young too young? It's not my choice," echoed Jeanette Bloshinsky, whose 5-year-old male-born daughter began asserting her identity as a girl from the moment she was out of diapers.

"From the day she could express herself there was nothing male about this child," said Bloshinsky.

Through treatment with a gender therapist it was decided that Bloshinsky's daughter Jaron should be enrolled in kindergarten this coming August as girl. But Bloshinsky is concerned. The school principal is conservative. Community members are struggling with Jaron's female pronouns. Already some people have expressed distaste upon seeing Jaron in feminine clothing.

"Some people say to me, 'How you can let him walk around looking like that?'" said Bloshinsky. "And I say, 'Because that's what he picked out to wear today.'"

Bloshinsky does not think Jaron is ready to wear dresses in public; normal childlike behavior sometimes involves exposure of the genitals, which could pose a safety risk. But Bloshinsky does believe "we are doing something right," pointing out that her child, rather than being fixated on gender issues, simply lives a happy and well-adjusted life.

"How young is too young?" Bloshinsky asked again. "I don't think it's ever too young to be who you are. At this point what's the worst that could happen? If she changes her mind, we'll transition back.""

The mom's name, and the son's respectively, Jeanette and Jaron. Just like the birth notice. What are the parents' names? Gregory and Jeanette! I understand being weary of unreliable sources and vandalism, but it's pretty easy to put two and two together. What do you expect the sources to say? "In the future, Jaron will identify as Jazz"? Dpm12 (talk) 13:26, 14 January 2018 (UTC)

Oh, and this: "She was 'assigned male at birth', meaning she was born a boy. Her parents, Jeanette and Greg, named their baby son Jaron." from: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3424571/Teen-transgender-activist-Jazz-Jennings-speaks-sadness-not-having-high-school-boyfriend-fear-called-gay.html Dpm12 (talk) 13:38, 14 January 2018 (UTC)

(edit conflict) It may be clear to you and to me, but I think it is also clear from WP:BLPPRIVACY (and common sense) that we should not include a name that the subject has obviously tried to keep private and which no reliable sources have explicitly confirmed to be her birth name. Our ability to "put two and two together" doesn't seem like a convincing justification—to me it sounds like another way of saying WP:Original synthesis. That policy specifically says, "Do not combine material from multiple sources to reach or imply a conclusion not explicitly stated by any of the sources." —Granger (talk · contribs) 13:39, 14 January 2018 (UTC)

Since you apparently need a source saying "In the future, Jaron will identify as a girl named Jazz", I added a discussion on the talk page. And by the way, "original research" constitutes not using a source or fancruft. Dpm12 (talk) 14:49, 14 January 2018 (UTC)

Mx Granger, Would you mind if I post your pictures of the Schoolfield School Complex on a FaceBook group page? I will give you the proper credit. Please advise.

Hi. Re [1] - for my benefit, could you let me know which of the 19 criteria under WP:ELNO are breached in providing the urban dictionary definition as an external link (not as a reference)? Cheers, Fish+Karate 21:35, 24 February 2018 (UTC)

Hi Fish and karate. It seems to me that Urban Dictionary clearly fails criterion 2 ("misleads the reader by use of factually inaccurate material or unverifiable research"). —Granger (talk · contribs) 21:48, 24 February 2018 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited American Board of Professional Psychology, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Chapel Hill (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Food Security edit

Hi --

I'm not sure I understand a notice I just saw on my account that you rolled back an edit I made to the Food Security article. I corrected a typo I found: "anad" was corrected to "and". And as far as I can tell, that edit has not been rolled back. To what is that message referring?

Celavin (talk) 04:00, 27 April 2018 (UTC)

@Celavin: Thanks for the message. Your edit changed the word "Trump" to "Drumpf" in four places, presumably because you had the "Drumpfinator" extension enabled. To avoid this problem in the future, please disable the extension before editing articles that mention Trump. —Granger (talk · contribs) 11:21, 27 April 2018 (UTC)

Pro-choice vs. Pro-abortion

Dear Mx.:

Describing Cecil Richards as pro-choice rather than pro-abortion undermines Wikipedia's credibility, and here's why.

When several options already exist, promoting the addition of another choice makes people "for more choices (plural) or "for a particular option." Calling them "for choice" exaggerates their position.

When several options exist and people defend a particular option, they are not defending "choice," they are defending one specific option. They would be defending choice only if the options would be narrowed to a single option. It is accurate to describe them as pro-[option name] and inaccurate to describe them as pro-choice.

When a person's position is associated not with the relevant option, but with "choice," it implies that anybody who opposes the option is "anti-choice." Indeed, "pro-choicers" frequently call those they oppose, "anti-choice." Thus, one side is elevated while the other side is denigrated, not on the basis of the actual disagreement, but on the basis of a straw-man.

When several options exist and people oppose one particular option, yet support choice between several remaining options, it is inaccurate to describe them as "anti-choice," to the point of being pejorative.

Please think about the meanings of the words and the motives behind their use. Is "pro-choice" accurate, or generalized to the point of misleading? Is it intellectually honest? Does it respect both sides, or does it elevate one side while denigrating the other? Is the term chosen to promote understanding, or to incite passions by invoking strong connotations? Is a polarizing misrepresentation going to promote trust, dialog, and empathy? Does it matter how an "activist" prefers to be described if the description is biased and misleading?

Does biased language belong on Wikipedia?

Alphadogtucker (talk) 07:25, 12 July 2018 (UTC)

The term "pro-choice" is both more common and more accurate than "pro-abortion". I think either "pro-choice" or "abortion-rights" would be acceptable in the article. "Pro-abortion" violates WP:NPOV and risks inaccuracy (not all pro-choice activists are pro-abortion – many are morally opposed to abortion but still believe it should be legal for libertarian or other reasons). —Granger (talk · contribs) 13:49, 12 July 2018 (UTC)
